What I do to make it fun for them is just clip their nail enough that they get to pull the hangnail off of each finger all by themselves. They love it because they get to help! -- Bekki, 35, from OH Snacks My friend gave me a great idea for dealing with kids eating freezies and having the freezie keep falling to the bottom of the plastic sleeve it comes in. It's frustrating for those toddlers who keep sucking at the plastic sleeve while the freezie itself has melted down an inche or two below the top. My friend uses bobby pins or those chip bag clips to put over the plastic sleeve just below the freezie itself, and it's easy to just move it up as the freezie is eaten, instead of finding scissors to trim the top every couple of minutes, or folding the bottom of the plastic which always comes unravelled....I thought it was a great help for kids and moms! -- Tammy, 29, from Ontario Crayons I have a back-to-school tip to share. If you have an elementary school child, chances are the cardboard box for the 24-ct crayons won't last more than a week or two, then the crayons get scattered all over the pencil box and broken. I bought a plastic travel box designed to hold a bar of soap. I did have to shop around a little, to find one that was sturdy, yet not too hard for little fingers to open. But it holds the crayons just great, and it fits inside a plastic pencil box. Our crayons last much longer now. -- Cheryll, 48, from OH We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! Choose napkins that coordinate with dishes or wall color and fold them in half in a triangle, hanging them over a curtain rod, slightly overlapping with the points towards the floor. Generally 3-4 cloth napkins are perfect, of course this will depend on the size of your window. This is fun because you can create new looks for different seasons and/or holidays! -- Jennifer, 33, from MI Try refurbishing old lamps, light fixtures, furniture with a new coat of paint. New lamp shades are also an inexpensive way to spruce up an old lamp. Find a fabric outlet and sew your own window treatments or head out to your local TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. for great deals on clearance items. -- Carrie, 29, from MN I always buy my paint at Walmart. It is $10 a gallon for their colorplace brand (which is made by Sherwin Williams) and they can match any color chip. Better than paying $22+ for the big name brands. I also check the oops (mess-ups or didn't like) rack in the paint centers of Home Depot/Lowes for $5 a gallon paint - I always find a color I can use somewhere! -- Sherri, 39, from MS ----------------------------- What's Cookin': Mexican Pizza Frozen bread loaves--one thawed 3 boneless chicken thighs-diced 1 small onion 3-4 garlic cloves Red and green bell pepper Small can of diced green chiles Cumin, ground oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt 4 oz. tomato sauce 8 oz. shredded mozarella cheese Saute chicken on low heat. Mince onion and garlic in food processor, add to chicken. When chicken is nearly done add chopped bell peppers, tiny pinch or oregano, a couple of pinches of cumin and some salt to chicken saute. While it is cooking slowly begin to roll out thawed frozen bread loaf into large pizza shape. Dust pizza pan or cookie sheet with a sprinkling of corn meal. Assemble pizza by smearing tomato sauce on pizza, sprinkle italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder onto sauce. Spread grated cheese then top with chicken mixture and can of green chiles. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. I love savory food, so my tongue was doing backflips over this new experiment! -- Kathy, 38, from CA ----------------------------- Real Moms: Best Bargain Ever When my son Tyler started hockey he wanted $450.00 Nike hockey skates. No way could we afford them, but I found them on eBay for $150.00. They were brand new, blade never sharpened. The mom selling them did not know what they were worth. -- Joanne, 38, from Ontario Some of my recent favorites are groceries that I received money back on due to double and triple coupons and the item being on sale. I purchased a like new toddler bed with matterss for $12 at a garage sale. Most of my best bargains come from knowing what I need, or will need in the future (i.e. toddler bed) and picking them up on great sales or garage sales. -- Amy, 31, from TX Know what things cost different places. Use a price book if necessary. Shop when things are on sale and stock up. Work menus around sale items. Use dollar stores and club stores only if they can beat the price everywhere else. -- Timmerle, 47, from CO These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles. Keep 'em coming!
