"As a mother, my job is to take care of what is possible and trust God with
the impossible." -- Ruth Bell Graham

==============================================================

Hello!

I hope you all had a great Labor Day holiday.  We celebrated Nicholas' first
birthday last week, and also our moving day.  Here are some photos:

Sydney is heading back to preschool this week, and we're anxious for other fall
activities to start.  Good luck to all of you with kids starting school!

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Books on Tape
My two year old son LOVES the books on tape and attached book you can get at
Borders for $9.99. To add to his collection, I take blank cassette tapes and
his favorite books and read them myself onto the tape. Then he can listen in
the car and read along. Great alternative to an on-board television or a
whiny child in the backseat! Also, after reading books before bed, he often
wants to keep reading the same book, instead...I'll cut on the tape and he
can listen before falling asleep! -- Courtney, 35, from NC

Flash Cards
My sons have a hard time taking care of their flash-cards.  To keep them
from getting torn up, but still letting them play themselves, I bought one
of those $1-$2 4x6 photo albums from Dollar General (can also find at
Walmart) and put each card in a sleeve.  -- Julia, 35, from KY

Furniture
We can't afford new furniture, and with two toddlers it would be a waste of
money even if we COULD, so I recovered my husband's favorite old recliner.
Upholstery fabric was too spendy for our tight budget, so I bought $2/yard
black textured vinyl with felt backing and got more than enough to cover the
chair even with a handful of first-time errors.  The best part is the vinyl
is completely washable (wipes off easily with a sponge) and looks and feels
like one of those expensive leather chairs.  The real difference is that I
don't have a heartattack when my two-year-old writes all over it with
crayons or finds a way to rip holes in it... I can just recover again with a
new color! -- Marie, 26, from ID

Birthday Parties:  Tips from our Readers

As a mom of 5, I am always looking for a way to save my pennies.
My kids love to have pinata' at their birthday parties, but they are
so expensive.  I found a way to make one from a grocery bag.  You punch
two holes on each of the long sides of the bag, to put string or ribbon,
whatever you want to use to hang it.  You let the birthday child decorate
it, from faces to hanging streamers from the bottom.  It is easy to break,
for younger kids, and they get to be proud that they made it themself.
-- Wendy, 35, from MN

Real Moms:  Money Saving Tips

Did you ever notice that the bottom sheet wearn out LONG before the top
sheet does?  Recently I needed to make new curtains for my son's room.
While browsing at the local thrift store, I came across a pair of flat
sheets with pinstripes and baseball cards running up and down.  Both were in
good condition.  I already had some old white sheets in storage.  So, I made
new curtains for about $1.50.  Now we are working on a Buzz Lightyear suit
with materials I had in my box and that I picked up at the thrift store
$1.00.  -- Dana, 34, from NM

Don't turn down anything anyone wants to give you--used clothes, toys,
etc.--smile, accept it with thanks, and if you can't use it, share it with
someone else. -- Jane, 45, from NY

Use coupons. Shop clearance racks first.  Shop at Target---great clearance
markdowns! Try to never pay full price.  Have a family budget.  Say no to
Credit Cards. -- Allison, 27, from KY
