Mommysavers Newsletter -- September 13, 2004 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "Men are what their mothers made them." --Ralph Waldo Emerson ============================================================== Hello! We made a trip to the new IKEA store in the Twin Cities last Saturday. Wow! Not only did they have really cute stuff, their prices were amazing. I was like a kid in a candy store. I am still going through my catalog marking things I want, just like I used to do as a kid with the Christmas catalog! Enjoy your week! I freeze the juice into cubes and them add them to water to have diluted juice for my toddler. This way the juice doesn't go bad before I can use it all. It also allows for variety in juice flavors since I don't have to use all of one opened juice before opening another bottle. -- Amy, 31, from TX Decorating Try refurbishing old lamps, light fixtures, furniture with a new coat of paint. New lamp shades are also an inexpensive way to spruce up an old lamp. Find a fabric outlet and sew your own window treatments or head out to your local TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc. for great deals on clearance items. -- Carrie, 29, from MN When doing home decorating, I have found on a couple of occasions that if you ask for things with damaged packaging retailers will mark down the prices considerably. My latest find was exterior paint. I was going to buy top of the line paint for $41.99 per gallon and there were cans of this paint with no handles on them which I purchased for $15.50. -- JoAnne, 38, from PA We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! We shop the dollar stores and buy fall foliage to arrange around the house. We also buy one nice fall scented candle or make stovetop potpourri out of apple peelings, vanilla, cinnamon and water. -- Suzanne, 36, from TX We need YOUR decorating tips for our newsletter! Submit them here: http://www.mommysavers.com/share_tips.htm ----------------------------- Halloween: Tips from our Readers My son had an infatuation with the Fed Ex truck back when he was 3. So for hallowe'en I invented a FedEx man costume. I already had a button up blue shirt for him so I took some blank address label stickers and drew the fedex logo on a small one for his front pocket and a large one for his back. Then I took a small, white box we had gotten something in in the mail and wrote the fedex logo on each side of that. He even had a mini magnadoodle that I taped to the top for his "customers" to "sign":) I got so many compliments on how cute his costume was and it literally took me 10 minutes to throw together and cost nothing to make. You could use this idea for any type of delivery/service person you can think of. ie)phone or cable man, UPS man, etc. -- Kari, 27, from AZ Send your Halloween tips our way! http://www.mommysavers.com/share_tips.htm ----------------------------- What's Cookin': Tasty Taco salad Depending on the size of your family you chose the amount of meat and items in the menu you will need. 1 lb. of ground beef 1 packet of taco seasoning 1 bag of Doritos or the flavored tortilla chips. 2 cups of lettuce 1 cup of tomatoes 1 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese sour cream salsa Cook the ground beef until done. Drain the fat. Add the taco seasoning and about 3/4 cups water. Let simmer for about 20 minutes. Prep your veggies. Just before you are ready to serve your dinner, crush the bag of Doritos to bite size pieces. Lay them on your plate. Then layer the meat, cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes. Then add salsa if desired. Eat to your heart's content. This is a very filling dinner or lunch enjoy. Feeds four just right. -- Debra, 37, from TN ----------------------------- Real Moms: Organization I use a stapler for lots of things; to close bags, keep papers together, and even to fix a curtain hem where you can't see it. -- Jennifer, 39, from TX I make my grocery list according to the layout of the store. It saves a lot of extra steps and time spent back-tracking. --Robin, 31, from LA There are two places I am organized. I keep a date book for all my appointments or school meetings. When I store the extra clothes for my boys, I have them all separated by size and season in different boxes. I also keep a huge box of shoes in the closet also. When we need something new, we shop the boxes first! -- Dana, 34, from NM These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles. Keep 'em coming!
