"As a mother, my job is to take care of what is possible and trust God with
the impossible." -- Ruth Bell Graham

==============================================================

Hello!

Sydney and I are in the current issue of First for Women magazine.  If you're
interested in checking it out, we're on page 99.  The article is called "You Can
Solve the Chore Wars" and while I helped the writer with some tips, I still feel
like we personally haven't won the "Chore Wars" here at our house.  If any of you
have some ideas on how to get your kids to help out more at home, send them our
way!  We'll include them in next week's newsletter. Send them to: mail@mommysavers.com.

Have a great week,
Kim

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Entertainment
Hi, I saw your article about Blockbuster.com. I tried it and Netflix.com and
found Netflix to be better. It's faster delivery, more movies available w/NO
wait. Blockbuster does have that online coupon but the reason I get DVD's in
the mail is to avoid the whole store thing. -- Lora, 39, from FL

Decorating
There are a number of paints mixed at home building stores such as Home
Depot which were not accepted by the purchaser...so they are discounted
considerably.  The bonus is that the store will attempt to alter the colour
to suit your needs - free of charge.  It was perfect for my two children's
bedrooms. -- Fiona, 40, from FL

Halloween:  Tips from our Readers

For Hallowe'en last year, I bought a regular chocolate cake mix, chocolate
frosting, some gummy worms, oreos and chocolate covered almonds. I made the
cake according to the directions, let it cool then put the icing on it. Then
I put the gummy worms spread around the cake and the platter, crumbled up
the cookies, and spread the almonds around it. To achieve a "maggot" look, I
put the almonds in the freezer, thus making them turn white. I took a
regular piece of cardboard and made a tombstone, and I traced my hand on
some of the cardboard and cut it out and stuck it in the cake. It looked
really neat, like a hand reaching out of a grave. My little girl thought it
was the coolest thing and my friends and family thought it looked really
neat, too. And the best part is, all the decorations can be eaten without
having to worry about anyone getting sick. It didn't take long to do, and
little people can help, too, crumbling the cookies and placing the worms and
"maggots". -- Amanda, 23, from NB

One of my favorite cheap Halloween decoration is to make ghosts and spiders
with garbage bags.  Ghosts are made with white garbarge bags:  put a paper
plate in the bottom and tie it at the "neck" to make the face.  Draw eyes
and mouth on the face.  Hang outside for the wind to help your ghosts "fly"!
Spiders are made with black garbage bags:  Fill one with old crumpled up
newspaper and tie closed for the body.  Cut eight legs from another and
spread them out from under the body.  Makes a great big yard spider!   These
are both great outdoor decorations because they are really cute but cheap
enough that it's not a big deal if they get messed up or stolen.  -- Melany,
43, from NV

What's Cookin':  Poor Man's Dinner

4 cups water
2 cups rice
1 tsp salt
1 Tsp butter
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 cup soy sauce

Bring water, salt and butter to boil and add rice, lower heat to low and
cover with lid, don't peek! Cook for 20 minutes and flake with fork. While
rice is simmering, brown 1 1/2 lbs ground beef and drain grease. Add 1/2 cup
soy sauce and toss meat with sauce well.  Microwave 1-2 cans French cut
green beans until very warm approx 5 mins. On a plate layer each individual
serving as follows:  Rice as the base layer, cover with ground beef mixture
and then a layer of drained beans. put Soy sauce on the table for those who
want more.  I love to serve this with bread and butter.  My kids love this
and it is easy for me to make as well as squeeze into my budget.:)--

Real Moms:  Best Bargain Ever

I bought 3 bathing suits that orginally sold from $69.00 to $80.00 at
JCPenney.  They were on sale for $1.77 each, and I had coupon they had
mailed me so I paid .51 for all of them! -- Tracy, 35, from NC

Recently I found a closeout place and bought two leather jackets (one was
knee length) for my daughter.  Both were slightly damaged. For example, one
was scuffed.  Like a leather jacket isn't gonna get scuffed.  Anyway, I paid
$10 a piece!!  New ones, with the tags still on..One was regular priced at
$119! -- Laura, 29, from OK

I once bought an almost new La-Z-Boy recliner in a thift shop for $8 dollars
because the back of it was off of its runners.  When i got it home, i simply
took the back off and inserted it properly---good as new.  My hubby loves
it. -- Monica, 26, from WA

Blessing Box

This is similar to an idea mentioned in your current newsletter, however, it is
for the whole year (or whatever period you designate).  Blessing boxes can be
home made by decorating a photo safe box with photos, or in my case, I purchased
a box with 4 places for photos on the outside of the box that was also meant to
hold photos, tossed the inner photo holders, and put my blessings in it.  I also
gave one to a friend for her son's baptism with the following note:

Blessing Box

Keep paper and pen handy.  Throughout the year, write down blessings or things that
you are thankful for and place them in your blessing box.  Blessings can be as simple
as your child??™s smile, each other, or a friend.  They are also special moments with
family or friends, a job, enough food, or your health.  Think of the best things in
your life.  Write each one down on a slip of paper, date it, thank God for it, and
place it in your box. If you??™re feeling down, open the Blessing Box and read through
your many blessings.  Watch your mood and life improve, and thank God for your many
blessings.

A neat tradition to start would be to open the Blessing Box on Thanksgiving Day and
read the many reasons your family has to be thankful for the previous year.  Then
you??™ll be counting your many blessings, one by one.  You can either tuck those
blessings away in an envelope to look back on, or put them in a scrapbook ??“ either
as their individual papers or type them up as a list.  Also, if you want to change
out the pictures in your Blessing Box every year, put the old pictures with the
blessings for that year.

Enjoy your many blessings, my friends! -- Laura, 34, from GA
