Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Crafts
For fall we make a tree of Thankfulness.  I either use a branch from the
yard or draw a tree on poster board.  Each day we trace our hands out of
color construction paper and write what we're thankful for.  By Thanksgiving
we have a beautiful and meaningful decoration. -- Melissa, 27, from GA

Groceries
I used to waste a lot of bread.  It seemed like either we never had enough
or we had too much and ended up throwing it away. Now, I buy 10 loaves at a
time at our budget bakery (Holsum's owned store) at 33 cents each and I
freeze them.  Sometimes I cut the loaves in half and freeze mini loaves by
saving old bread bags. The key is when I think the bread is getting old, I
either make a batch of french toast and freeze it by making the toast,
putting the slices on a cookie sheet for 15 or more minutes in the freezer,
then putting them into freezer bags or I tear it up into stuffing cubes and
add it to a big freezer bag that I have in the freezer. This has saved me
lots of money and trips to the store. I wish I would have thought of this
earlier! -- Janel, 37, from PA

Contact the Manufacturer
Recently, the baby monitor I have had since 2001 went on the fritz. I
figured out the electrical cord was the problem. I really liked this monitor
and didn't want to spend another $30-40 for a new one, so I contacted the
company to find out how to get a replacement cord and found out my monitor
was still under warranty! All I had to do was send it back to them and they
would send me a replacement for FREE. After $6 for postage and a bubble
mailer, I will have a new monitor! -- Deb, 33, from MN

More on Movies...

I saw some notes in the newsletter about Netflix and Blockbuster. I thought
I'd add that Hollywood Video is offering a great deal for $9.99 per month
for the first three months and then $14.99 a month thereafter. The benefit
for us is there is no mailing back and forth. We live about 1.5 miles from a
store and we pick up three movies every few days. It's fun for the kids to
see new videos and we're able to share some videos with family. -- Susan,
37, from MD

Hey I just wanted to say we have been Netflix subscribers for years and
switched over to Blockbuster after we saw it here and we love it. It was a
bit slower than netflix at first but when I spoke to Blockbuster about the
delay they told me how many shipment centers they were opening up and where
and I realized there would be one in our town soon. I love the coupons they
give because I order the online movies for my husband and I and then use the
coupons to get the kids the flicks they want to see and it works out great.
They are more likely to get a whole movie watched in one weekend but I am
never sure when I will find the time. I love blockbuster - thanks so much
for introducing it to us. -- Becky mother of 2 in Georgia

The Chore Wars:  Tips from our Readers

My two kids love Nascar. So to make cleaning fun, I tell them we are going
to have a race. I set the timer, I always try to have more time than they
need to finnish the job.  Once the timer is set, I say, "On your mark, get
set, go!"  In a matter of minutes the chores are done.  It works really well
for us. -- Wendy

I have a five year old son and four year old twins, also boys. They already
set the table for dinner, remove their plates and glasses after dinner,
scraping them if needed, and then place them in the sink.  They also remove
their sheets from their beds so that I can put clean sheets on the beds once
a week. My husband and I have just worked with them over time until it has
become a habit with them. My 5 year old recently took over replacing the
toilet paper roll when it runs out - which is something my husband doesn't
even do! When they think it is something that is just expected of them, they
don't fight it - for now anyway! -- Deb

My son just turned two this summer and now he wants to do more and more
things for himself. So I decided he was old enough at least to pick up his
toys (most of the time) I tell him in order to play with another toy the one
he was playing with has to be put away. He does with, with no hassle at all.
He even does it in his own room with out even being told. So his room is
always spotless. Now if this method would only work on my husband!

More tips coming next week!

Halloween:

This year for Halloween, my daughter will be dressing up as a princess.  She
happened to stand up in a wedding this year, so we will be using that dress,
buy a crown from the dollar store, and she's set!  My littlest will be
bunny - pink top and pants with Goodwill rabbit ears (that's if she will
keep it on!).  -- Heather, 32, from WI
