I bought the costume my son will be wearing this Halloween for $2.50 on clearance at Target last year. I also look for costumes with hoods and other accessories attached so you don't have to hunt all over town for all the matching accessories. -- Maggie, 35, from GA Contact the Manufacturer I just read the tip about contacting the manufacturer when you have an older (or newer!) product that goes on the blink. I want to reinforce that practice with my experience. I had a Baby Bjorn carrier we had purchased in 2000. While using it with baby #3, one of the top connecting straps tore off. I contacted the company and, while the carrier was no longer under warranty, they offered me a brand new model for $30! Having priced the new ones at nearly $100, I certainly took them up on their offer and now have a new, much easier to use baby carrier! -- AnneMarie, 38, from IN We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! To help overcome this problem I find it useful to have temporary holding bins in every room. For example, in my bedroom I have five white Rubbermaid dishpans labeled Car, Kitchen, Home Office, Bathroom, and Work that I keep on a shelf in my closet. When I am in the bedroom, anything associated with an errand such as library books to be returned are put in the CAR dishpan. Anything to be returned to the kitchen is placed in the Kitchen dishpan. Anything I need for work goes into the WORK dishpan and anything for the home office goes into Home Office dishpan. When a dishpan is full and when I'm going there anyway for other reasons I carry the loaded dishpan to the location where its contents belong and put all the stuff away during that one trip. All the other rooms in my house also have dishpans for stuff that belong in other rooms. I keep the dishpans on appropriately sized bookshelves dedicated for this purpose. I find this method saves me from running around the house all the time putting things away. If I don't have enough energy to put something away in another room I generally have enough energy to put it in the appropriate dishpan. If you don't like dishpans in every room you can reserve dedicated sections of empty bookshelves for things that belong in other rooms of your house. -- Bob, 54, from Ontario ----------------------------- Winning the Chore Wars: Tips from Our Readers I am a single mother of two boys, ages 8 and 4. With the older son having ADD, it is often extremely difficult to get him to stay on the task of getting ready in the morning. Add to that the idea of having him do chores and we were running into a real problem. One of the suggestions of his pediatrician and psychologist was to "chunk" his tasks for each day. It gives him a sense of accomplishment and also has proven to make him a more responsible member of the family. For my oldest son I hung a corkboard outside his bedroom. I started by making index cards and writing individual tasks on each. Then numbered the cards in the bottom corner. My pre-school age sonbenefitted from similar cards with pictures instead of letters or numbers. The key was to begin by teaching the child tasks to be responsible for themselves and their belongings. On the corkboard was a sheet labeled with each day of the week, divided up by AM and PM. In the AM were the numbers of those cards with tasks to be done in the morning, i.e., Brush My Teeth, Make My Bed, etc. Every morning my son would take the appropriately numbered cards and as each card's task was completed, he would return it to a pouch hanging on the corkboard that said "Completed Cards". When we would get home from the sitter's in the evening he would do the same for the "PM" numbered cards. After the first month he was in the habit of doing many things on his own. He now gets himself completely ready in the mornings and in the evenings gets his clothes ready for the next day and even makes his own lunch for school. It has turned frantic mornings and hurried evenings into (mostly) predictable routines. Once my son became accustomed to being responsible for his own things, I added "chore" cards. They are treated the same as the original group of tasks but include things that are part of being a responsible member of the household such as watering the plants, cleaning the bathroom sink, putting movies and video games away, etc. He has the option of adding additional cards to his "deck" for the day if he'd like a bit more allowance (like $1 for cleaning the toilet!) and it teaches him that he has to work for his money. He also knows that half of his earned allowance every week goes to the bank, the other half is his to spend or save as he deems necessary. -- Jennifer from NY ----------------------------- What's Cookin': Easy Pasta This is a very delicious pasta recipe that is extremely easy and inexpensive to prepare. Take a can of cream of mushroom soup (I use generic), put it in a saucepan and add 1 1/4 cans of milk and chopped up broccoli (a cup or so). Prepare the soup according to the directions and then pour over angel hair pasta. I also top it with parmesan cheese and some salt and pepper. Yummy! -- Jody, 29, from MD ----------------------------- Real Moms: Funny Things Kids Do/Say My son justifies his no veggie stance by saying, "They make you grow to fast, and I am not done being a kid!" -- Melissa, 29, from MD Lately, we've been working on potty training - and she's starting to do well.
