I use those thin, bendable, magnets various companies give out at fairs or in the mail to make "new" ones for my 19 month old son. I cut out pictures of things he likes (currently kitty cats!) from magazines or calendars (the tear off one page each day kind works great to find many great photos). Trace the magnet for the size to cut out and then use clear packaging tape to cover the entire magnet and around the edges to the back side (or they peel the picture off). Tape on the back still allows the magnet to stick. My son loves them and since they are safe and unbreakable he knows he can take them off and on the fridge whenever he wants to. The tape covering makes them very easy to wipe off with a damp cloth to clean! -- Julie, 27, from MN Community Resources My community has a bulletin board on "Yahoo Groups". I signed up and posted WANTED messages whenever I needed to obtain something for my home - people are always looking to get rid of things that are laying in their basements or garages. Through this method, I got a steel bunkbed (with 2 mattresses), a loveseat and a dresser for my kids' room ---- all for nothing - just the cost of driving over and picking up the things. I also found a slipcover on ebay for the loveseat by finding one listed by an outlet store that had no bids on it (it obviously wasn't a popular design). The bids started at 99 cents with $7 ship/hand - so I got it for $7.99 - brand new! -- Andrea, 38, from NJ Roach Killer I have found a great inexpensive way to kill roaches. Mix 1/2 corn starch and 1/2 plaster of paris. Mix well, then place some in those pill lids or a jar lid and place them under the sink and other places where the little critters hide or are. It works great. They love corn starch and the plaster of paris kills them. Linda Jean Rhoades, New Burnside, Illinois We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! Free personalized message gift card on each favor, free shipping with $50 orders or more! ----------------------------- Holidays: Tips from our Readers One dilemma I used to have every year was what to do with all the yummy holiday food. I love to go crazy every Christmas baking all sorts of cookies, candies, and desserts. Unfortunately, I'd be as big as a house if I indulged in every one of them. So, everytime I bake a batch of cookies or candy, I keep 8-12 for us and freeze the rest. I make pumpkin breads etc. in mini loaf pans, I keep 1 and freeze the others. Whenever we're invited to a Holiday gathering I offer to bring dessert. This way I get to sample everything I love without the calories of all that food looming around the house. I buy baskets from the thrift store that are in good condition (they usually sell for less than $1) and I pack all my frozen cookies etc. into recycled containers (such as coffee cans wrapped in gift paper). -- Cyndi, 34, from GA My kids love making stationary or note cards for their grandparents. They use clip art, photos and fun fonts to personalize plain white paper. Wrap it up with a pretty ribbon and you have a fun, personal inexpensive gift. If you have a scanner, have the kids creat their own art work and scan it in. (You can return certain toner/printer cartridges at local office supply stores and receive a free ream of paper- use that paper and your cost is only your ink!) -- Kim, 35, from MN My 3 children have a generous spirit. Last year they wanted to give all of their classmates a Christmas gift! I found a way to nurture this giving attitude and still not break the bank. We found a recipe for "Snowman Soup" (homemade hot chocolate mix), packaged single serving sizes in sandwich bags, then decorated white styrofoam cups with markers to look like snowmen faces. Next we tied a slip of paper with directions (add 8oz warm water) to a candy cane, wich we put in the cup for stirring. We made 50 cute little gifts for less than $15. But the best part was we were together, having fun, and making memories instead of running around trying to find gifts and being cranky with each other. There ARE some things money just can't buy-a peaceful holiday is only one of them! -- Christy, 30, from AL ----------------------------- What's Cookin': Green Bean Casserole 6 cans green beans 1 large can whole tomatoes(about 28 oz or so) 1/4 onion, chopped 1/2 lb bacon Garlic powder White rice Salt, Pepper and Butter to taste Cook bacon until done. Add onion and cook till soft. Add green beans, whole tomatoes and add a sprinkle of garlic powder. Heat all the way through. Season w/ salt and pepper to taste. Serve over buttered hot white rice. Yum! This is a favorite, feeds our family of 5 (3 teenagers, 2 adults). I use 6 'normal' cans of green beans, however, you can easily buy one of the jumbo cans and just freeze/save what you don't use. -- Marlene, 38, from TX ----------------------------- Real Moms: Organization I use big buckets for certain toys for my kids. For example, big toys like trucks and cars go into the toy box but little toys like lego blocks and other blocks have there own bucket with a label and a picture of the item on the bucket so my kids know what items go in that bucket. -- Pamela, 32, from TX Put all your purchased-ahead gifts in one place so you don't have to go hunting all around for them...like Grandma's house. -- Dana, 34, from NM I make myself a cleaning schedule for the week. That way it all gets done, but I dont feel overwhelmed. I also use a lot of the Rubbermaid stackable boxes for organizing everything from crayons, kids clothes, holiday decorations, etc. -- Shannon, 32, from CA These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles.
