Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Saving at Sam's
Sam's sells contacts and glasses cheaper than Walmart, as you all know, but
did you know that you don't have to have a Sam's card in order to use the
optical? Or the pharmacy for that matter. That's how I bought our daughter's
contacts for $5 dollars cheaper per box. Call and check out the rules for
your state. Or it maybe a federal law, thus making it a nationwide deal. --
Stacia, 35, from TX

Simplify Your Life
Pay your bills online at online bill pay.  It has saved me hours per month,
no more stamps, no more envelopes, no more waiting for the mailman to get my
check in time. Many banks offer free bill pay.  I also reconcile my account
weekly, and I don't have to wait for my monthly statement.  -- Lisa, 44,
from NJ

Bedding
Many of you probably know this one, but I'll share it anyway.  When folding
your sheets, put your fitted sheet, flat sheet, and one pillow case into the
last pillow case left.  Store your sheets in your pillow case--easy to
identify, easy to store, and easy to put back on your bed.  Another tip is
when you buy a complete bedding set, use the flat sheet to make valances for
your bedroom--buy another low-budget solid color sheet for your bedding set.
Many times the flat sheet that comes with the comforter set matches the
comforter and looks nice as a window valance. -- Lisa, 44, from NJ

What's New:

Picture of the Week:  Leif at Two Months
Submitted by Martha R. from MI
Martha writes, "Here's a photo of our boy, Leif Anton, at two months old.
He's quite a smily guy! We decided to keep track of his first year by taking a
photo of him on the 27th of each month. We put a sign with his age in
each monthly photo to remember how old he is. This one turned out especially
well." To view the photo, click here:

Last-Minute Valentine's Ideas

You can purchase $25.00 gift certificates for half price!  Yes, just $12.50!

(Just be sure to read it carefully, some restaurants do impose "no specials/gifts
on Valentine's Day, Mothers Day, etc.).  -- Sue from PA

I'm planning a Sweetheart Scavenger hunt for my kids for Valentine's Day.
I did all my shopping at the dollar store.  My 2 year old daughter is into pretty
jewelry right now so I bought a pack of rings for her.  My 4 year old son loves
anything with wheels so I bought a pack of cars for him.  Then I picked up a package
of Valentine treat bags.  I'll put their surprises in the bags and hide them.
I'm going to wake them up with their first goody and a clue then lead them all
over the house to find the rest of their treasures.  Lots of fun for just $3.00.
-- Andi from IN

When my husband and I were dating, I was still in college and neither of us had a
lot of money to spend on non-essentials. So I got a small piece of tag board and a
bag of the little candy hearts with the sayings on them. I created a home-made
poster card for him using the sayings. I was able to say "I Love You" and "I Miss You"
when we weren't together. I wrote in words where needed and decorated with stickers.
He loved it and it is still displayed in a hutch for everyone to see. That was 7
years ago. -- Heather from MN

What's Cookin':  SWAMP GRASS STEW

Purchase a "Soup Saver" or use any freezer box with really a really good
seal, large size.  Then start saving ALL your leftovers: mashed potatoes,
gravy, chili, any/all vegetables, and all meats (boneless of course).  When
your container is full enough, thaw it out to simmer with seasonings of your
choice (we ALWAYS use garlic power, onion power, salt and black pepper).
Add a pound or two of stew beef, cooked separately, if you haven't collected
enough meat to suit you.

We call this Swamp Grass Stew because it sure "ain't pretty" - but it sure
is good!  My family could eat it until their sides hurt; I've even had picky
eaters visit and they loved it.

We like to have fun with it by naming things in it you might find in a swamp
like alligator eggs - whole baby potatoes, the grass is a given - usually
spinach or greens, carrots are rocks, etc.  And vitamins usually cook down
to the liquid in your vegetables anyway, so if you save that from all your
dishes, and make soup out of it, you're getting plenty of nutrition!

If I boil potatoes, I'll keep the liquid as stock (stored separately) to
help in the soup for times when I need to thin it.  Same when I parboil
chicken I'll keep that for stock, too.  I'll even keep drippings from a pot
roast but use that sparingly because of the grease.

After simmering your soup for 30 to 60 minutes so all the flavors mesh (over
low heat), season to taste, add hot sauce if you like, and usually about 2
to 4 TBS white vinegar.

You have to try it to believe it.  It's practically free and will usually
make two meals at my house. -- Susie, 45, from SC

Real Moms:  Organization

I have several lists that I got out of books years ago that I use to keep me
on track with my cleaning.  One is a Daily list, with things like Take out
the garbage, clean the dishes & wipe out the sink, etc.  One is a Weekly
List, One is Monthly, and One is Seasonal.  This helps me keep track of if I
haven't cleaned the windows or if I've let something fall behind, like
vacuuming the sofa & curtains (which is on the seasonal list).  Sometimes
these chores are easily forgotten, so having the list is invaluable.  I
don't have to "remember" every single thing, I just consult my list. --
Deborah, 41, from CO

I keep a spiral notebook for my to do list.  I jot down any phone call
messages or needs in my notebook as well as cross out the chores or items I
need to accomplish during the day.  I have, on many occasions, had to go
back through my notebook to recall phone numbers, messages, etc. -- Sylvia,
49, from CA
