"A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five
people, promptly announces she never did care for pie." -- Tenneva Jordan

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Gassy Tummies
My 5 month old son is on formula, and I hated all the foam that formed when
shaking the bottles (and gassy tummy it caused), so I now put one tiny drop
of the infant anti-gas drops (I use the generic form of Infant Mylicon,
active ingredient simethicone) in each bottle.  Works great!  He never has
gas and always produces a nice BIG burp at the end of the bottle.
Simethicone isn't absorbed by the body and an entire day's worth of bottles
requires less than than one dose of the anti-gas drops. -- Laura, 42, from
Washington

Buy Unisex
I have 4 kids (ages 7, 5, 3, 1) two girls and two boys.  Over the years we
have saved a TON of money buying unisex styles when possible.  Examples are
life jackets, snow pants, snow boots, BIKES, helmets, toddler beds,
comforters, soccer balls, backpacks, etc.  When our oldest was little, we
bought everything the color pink or Barbie-themed.  Now she gets neutral
colors so that we can pass the item down.  We REALLY REALLY try to do this
on items that kids seem to grow out of BEFORE the item gets worn out. --
Mary, 40, from IN

Thrifty Fun

Sidewalk Chalk
Sidewalk chalk can make for hours of summer fun. The chalk can be used to
draw hopscotch or four square lines on your driveway or patio. The kids can
also just draw pictures. The pictures will last for a few days, until it
rains, or can be easily washed off with a garden hose

Deck of Cards
A deck or two of playing cards can be purchased very cheaply and opens up
numerous games for kids. Kids can play Go Fish, War, Old Maid, Crazy Eights,
Solitaire, and other simple games. Cards can also be used to build card
houses or to do magic tricks. Check out a book of card games at the library
and kids can entertain themselves for hours.

What's Cookin':  Rice, Beans and Cheese

3/4 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked (not instant or converted rice)
1 1/2 c water
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar or Colby cheese
1 can chili beans, undrained
1 tsp chili powder

Combine water and rice in medium saucepan, cover and bring to a boil. Turn
heat to low and let cook without uncovering or stirring for 20 minutes. When
rice is cooked, stir in cheese, beans and chili powder until heated through.
Don't forget to keep stirring! Serves 4 I like to serve this with a side
salad. Yummy as-is, or: -Roll up in tortillas and lightly brown each side of
it in a frying pan. -Serve with salsa, hot sauce or taco sauce -Use as
burrito filling along with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, sour cream. This
is quick and easy, and although it may not look very appealing to parents
I've NEVER met a kid that doesn't love it. It has a great mild tex-mex
flavor without being too spicy.
