"It is not until you become a mother that your judgment slowly turns
to compassion and understanding." -- Erma Bombeck

==============================================================

Hello!

Last week I got hooked on the hit TV show Lost.  I held out all last year,
knowing that I'd be hooked after watching just once.  I was right!  Luckily
now I can watch all the episodes on DVD at my own pace.  I'm renting mine
through Netflix.  Find out how you can get a free two-week trial and rent
those great LOST episodes, too!

With November's challenge being the $25 Outfit, I decided to put my own
bargain-hunting skills to the test.  Scroll down to see how I did, and how you can
do it too!

Have a great week,

Kim

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Holiday Memories
Each year since my husband and I were first married I have taken the end of
the live tree that they cut off when you purchase it (it's the round piece
of wood from the trunk) and made my own personalized ornament.  I put a hole
in it and a string through to hang it, then I write on it in permanent magic
marker (ex: Our first Christmas 1999).  I leave it at that but you could
certainly go one step further and paste glitter, or sequins, or even
feathers on it.  A unique, rustic type Christmas ornament. -- Anet, 33, from
NY

Free (or cheap!) Produce
Check your local apple orchards and fresh produce markets for reduced
produce.  Several orchards will either give away the apples, squash,
pumpkins, etc. or charge next to nothing.  We went this weekend and could
take as much as we wanted.  They only charge we had was a free will donation
that would be given to the local food pantry! -- Rhonda, age 30

What's Cookin':  Garlic Shrimp Pasta

Olive Oil 1-2 TB
Butter 2-6TB
Minced Garlic 5-8 cloves
Crushed red pepper flakes
Shrimp
Fetticune pasta

Start pasta water and cook pasta. I mince the garlic (last night I used
about 7-8 cloves, some were a little small though) then saute (over low/med
heat) with the butter and olive oil with the red pepper flakes til garlic is
tender. Add the shrimp and cook until pink.  It doesn't take long, just a
few minutes.  Then toss the sauce/shrimp with drained pasta. Sprinkle with
garlic salt and parmesan cheese at the table. -- Noah's Mommy

Real Moms:  In the Kitchen

I always buy chicken in bulk and cook, and freeze.  You can make so many
things with chicken.  Spend less time in the kitchen!  Plan your menus and
shop! -- Vicki, 34, from CO

I love my crock pot. I can put a meal in it in the morning and when they get
home, dinner is done and I can spend more time with them. -- Monica, 43,
from FL

I keep all my kids dishes, cups, and snacks at their level. This way my kids
can get what they want to eat themselves. I also put drinks on the bottom
shelf in the refrigerator. This cuts down on the "Mommy, can I have..." --
Lori, 39, from MA

Can't-Live-Without Home Products: New Faves
Can't-live-without home products, what are your faves mom didn't have?  I
was just thinking today of the relatively new innovations (stuff my mom
didn't have) that I have become totally reliant on. Regardless of price, I
seem to "need" them, and will scrimp on other things to justify spending the
money.

Allowances:  How Much is Too Much?
How much is too much to give for an allowance? My son is 9 and he helps me
clean the house and he has certain chores he has to do. I give him 10
dollars a week. But that also includes him making sure his homework is done
every day.  Someone told me that was way too much to give him, but I think
with all he does it's ok. He cleans the living room, picks up dirty clothes
and takes them downstairs, takes out the garbabge and cleans his room. I
don't think giving him 10 dollars a week is too much for all he does. Does
anyone else think its too much?
