tips last week.  We got some good ones!  I'm trying to work ahead and get
the tips for September done early, so I can take some time "off" when the
baby arrives.  If you have a tip to share, I'd love to see it!  I still need

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Cleaning
Cloth baby diapers fit perfectly on a Swiffer, and you can wash and reuse
them. -- Wendy from FL

Back to School Clothes
Sears will replace jeans with exact same size and brand if the knees wear
out if you are a member of their kids club.  To join their kids club, all I
needed to do was give them my phone number and they track how much I spend
on kids clothes.  When you spend $100 (I think) they give you a discount on
your next purchase.  I just replaced 3 pair of knee-worn jeans to be used by
younger son next year!  You need to keep recipts for name brands, but they
didn't need my receipt for the Sears brand (Canyon River Blues).  Good thing
to remember for Back to School shopping!! -- Debbie from NC

Cooking
A very good money saving tip on meats is to check out the local processing
stores. I live in the south, and the local deer hunters are plentiful. For
those of you that are opposed, I will give you some insight. I have been
raised on deer meat, and it has way less grease and fat.  When you cook the
burger, you don't even have to drain it, because there is no left over
grease. Processing centers usually have leftovers and sell it really cheap.
Usually the meat comes from people who brought their meat to be processed
and never showed up to pick it up. For about 40 bucks you can get enough
meat (burger, roast, steak, cubesteak, sausage, and tenderloin) to feed your
family for about 2-3 months. -- L. Spohn 25, mom of 3, GA

What's Cookin':  Mexican Chicken Quesadillas

Boneless chicken tenders, sliced or cubed
1 small bell peppers, sliced thin
1 small onion, sliced thin
1/2 cup salsa
1/4 pkg. taco seasoning, enough to taste
Bacon, 1 slice per quesadilla
Cheddar cheese
Flour tortillas
Sour cream
Extra salsa to serve on side

I first brown the bacon.  Drain the exess bacon fat out of the pan and brown
the chicken, peppers, and onions.  When they are done, add the salsa, taco
seasoning and enough water to make a good consistency.  To prepare
quesadilla, I layer flour torilla, cheese, bacon, chicken mixture, more
cheese, and last tortilla.  I brown in a nonstick, ungreased pan on both
side or until cheese is melted.  I serve with sour cream and salsa.  For my
son, I take some chicken out before adding the taco seasoning and prepare
his with just chicken, cheese, and bacon.  I found this recipe when I became
a diabetic during pregnancy.  As a diabetic, I prepared mine without bacon
and with very little cheese.  If you have leftovers, it's wonderful over
white rice.

Editor's Note:  Check out this quesadilla maker on Amazon.com.  We got one a
couple months ago and LOVE it!

Real Moms:  In the Kitchen

My favorite cooking tip:  Cook your rice (I prefer brown rice - more
nutrients) in fat free chicken broth.  It gives the rice a great flavor, and
you don't have to add additional oils (butter, olive) for seasoning.  I
sprinkle some herbs and mix well, tastes great, healthier than boxed mixes,
and cheaper, too.  Just substitute the broth for the water cup for cup. --
Laura, 26, from TX

Sauce made in the microwave.  I can make this in my sleep!  Melt a knob of
butter for 20 seconds, whisk in two tablespoons of flour and then mix a pint
of milk in until smooth.  Microwave for two seconds, whisk, microwave
another two seconds, whisk, a final two seconds should see it turn into a
smooth white sauce ready for any flavorings! -- Hilary, 50

I like to cook up a bunch of ground beef (several lbs.) at a time, adding
chopped onions, salt and pepper. Then after it all cools, I bag it up with
about 3/4 lb. in each freezer bag and stick it in the freezer. When I am in
a rush and haven't thought about what to make for dinner, I can just pull
out a bag of already cooked ground beef and add it to spagetti, tacos, etc.,
etc. It sure saves me a lot of time. -- Donna, 50, from VA

Back to School:  Tips from our Readers

On saving money on back to school shopping: Wait until after the Labor Day
weekend to begin fall shopping. Most children start school in shorts because
it is still too warm to wear the fall clothes.  Stock up on the basics like
socks and underwear during the sales now.  Then add the rest later. --
Kimberly from CO

Back to school shopping- when trying to save money here always watch the
circulars.  I know this saves us tons.  I also use these prices to stock up
on stocking stuffers and get 2 rounds for the Christmas season- by that time
a lot of the things the kids have at school are depleted.  When buying back
packs spend a little more money or watch thrift stores/garage sales for the
name brand backpacks that are built to last.  This way you can use them for
2-4 years before replacing.  Pencil boxes- last year I spent more on the
ones for my daughters and at the end of the school year I nabbed them as
soon as they got home from school with them.  Now I don't have to buy that
either.  If your kids school uses glue sticks buy a lot more than what they
say.  I know my kids are using more and more of this with each kid-
especially in the younger grades.  -- Lori from NE

At the end of the school year, my daughter's school sends home the list of
supplies needed for the next year.  I pick up 1 or 2 items each week,
usually from Dollar General or Family Dollar, that way by the time the first
day rolls around I have all the supplies.  Also, this way I only spend a
couple of dollars each week instead of a large amount all at one time.  This
week I kept the list (it has each grade on 1 sheet), and as I find items on
sale that will be for next year I'm going to pick them up so I'll be ahead
of the game. -- Lisa from MD
