"The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy
family all wrapped up in each other." -- Burton Hillis

==============================================================

Hello!

Well, I thought we'd get around to making ornaments, but it looks like we'll
have to do that today or tomorrow.  We did manage to visit Santa (he looked SO real!)
and make gingerbread cookies, however.  To check out those photos, visit:
http://www.mommysavers.com/family_album.htm

This week we are all frantically getting ready for the holidays.  It seems
like no matter how hard you prepare all year round, there are always things
left to do.  Scroll down for homemade ornament ideas, last-minute gift
ideas, and more.

Have a great week!

Kim

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Simplify Baking
I use my bread machine as much as possible to make fresh bread for our
family. As needed I make up the dry ingredients in quart size freezer bags
and put the in the freezer. The bags are labeled so they can be reused. Then
when I want to make bread I take one out of the freezer and let it come to
room temperature and add the wet ingredients and yeast and push start. It
really helps on those busy days.

When making cookie dough make a double or triple batch and roll them into
balls and flash freeze them (30 to 45 mins usually) then put them in freezer
bags and there ready when you want to make a treat for the family or just
want something sweet for yourself. You can make as many as you want this
way. Just take them out and place them on a pan for a short time, like while
pre heating your oven, then bake at usual temp. and enjoy.  -- Kristi, 34,
from Baldwin, ME

Pet Cleanup
Rather than buying expensive brushes or tape and roller to remove pet hair
from furniture and clothinf, use an ordinary household sponge, slightly
dampened.  This works better than most of the products designed specifically
designed to remove pet hair and lint. -- Stacey, 55, from Aurora, CO

Homemade Christmas Ornaments

I made these yesterday with the kids and they smell so good. You take 1/2
cup cinnamon, 1/2 cup apple sause, and 2 Tbsp of glue, mix it all together
and roll it out onto wax paper. Cut with cookie cutters and lay flat to dry
for about 5 days. Make sure you put a whole in the top to be able to string
them up. You can make picture frames, Christmas decoration for the tree,
make garland with those and some holiday ribbon or fabric. They smell
wonderful. -- Missy from MN

This year I made ornaments wtih my 2 1/2 year old. We made a dough and cut
shapes out with cookie cutters and baked them until they were hard. Then she
had fun decorating with paint and glitter. They turned out very cute.
The recipe for the dough is
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 1/2 cups hot water
Knead the dough and roll it out to desired thickness to cut out shapes. Use
a straw to poke a hole in the top of each ornament to thread ribbon. Place
on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high for about 2 minutes, or
preheat the overn to 325 and place ornaments on a baking sheet lined wiht
parchment pater. let them dry and harden for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. -- EAS Mommy

What We're Talking About:  In the Forums

Christmas Gifts:  Container Ideas Needed
I am trying to come up with a frugal Christmas gift for a few friends and
family. I think I have it: milk bath! But I don't know what to put it in
that would be nice to make it "gifty." I have a really easy, inexpensive
recipe to use, but I haven't been out shopping much, and I need something
decorative, but inexpensive - having to buy $3-4 dollar bottles to put it in
kind of defeats the purpose! Any suggestions? Anyone seen anything nice at
Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store lately?

Dry Hands
My hands are so dry they are bleeding. All across my knuckles on my right
hand they are bleeding, any lotion I have tried to use stings so bad that I
have to wash it off or cry, including unscented and sensitive skin. I am
going to the doctor on Friday for other things, and will ask him for
something for my hands as well, but until then any suggestions? I am
desperate.

Real Moms:  Money Saving Tips

I love Targets clearence items, a big percentage of everything we own comes
from clearance items.  I make a list of things I need or want and then keep
the list in my purse, when I go shopping anywhere I take it out at the
clearance aisle. -- Becky, 34, from TX

Shop sales. Use manufacturer coupons. Take advantage of store discounts
(i.e. Kohl's, JCPenney, JoAnn's, etc) for bigger items (you can save a lot
that way).
Use Happenings Book coupons (2 for one) for meals out. -- Cindy, 36, from
Rogers, MN
