Mommysavers Newsletter -- January 3, 2006 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." -- Anne Bradstreet ============================================================== Happy New Year! It's hard to believe it's January 3rd already. Our holidays were a blur, and I'm still recovering. Our tree is still up, gifts still need to be put away. With extended family still in the area, it's not likely I'll get organized anytime soon! This year I'm looking forward to bringing a new look to the site, and lots of fresh content as well. We're starting the new year off with a returning writer, Allison Braswell, who parodies those Christmas letters we all know and love. Scroll down to check it out! Natural gas prices are rising, not electric prices! -- Kathy, 27 Charitable Giving I pick up toys, books, gift items I find on clearance throughout the year. I use them for gifts to have on hand for birthdays etc. Some are used for my son to give to Toys for Tots. I can contribute much more by getting them at great prices. My son feels very special helping others this way. -- Sue, 48, from MN Bakery Bargains I go to our local bakery thrift store and buy bread, bagels, buns, and english muffins at a fraction of the cost. $1 a loaf usually for the good stuff (usually $2-2.50 at the store). I will buy up to 10 loaves or so, and freeze what I won't use right away. This also saves me from extra trips to the store, when we run out we just head to the freezer. -- Rachel, 34, from MN ------------------------------ This Week: Real Mom Profile: Florence, 41, from Mays Landing, NJ This mom says having two children with disabilities has taught her how to live on less. During my 2nd c-section, my ob/gyn mentioned that there was a lot of scar tissue from #1 and that it could be a bit riskier if I had a third. For those of you who have been through more than one cesarean, what is your experience regarding this? Anyone had a similar situation, or know of someone who has, and what is the outcome? http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=23659 How Often Do You Food Shop? I'm finding that I'm spending WAY to much at the grocery store. Some weeks go by and nothing then BOOM, I'm buying a ton of ton. Like yesterday I ran to Walmart 150 there and today at the grocery store another 150.00 and I still have to go to BJ's for diapers and stuff. Do you go every 2 weeks and only get what you need, stock up, make meals around what's on sale? http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=22412 Christmas Trees: Is Yours Down Yet? I'm home today from work. I've already taken the tree down and packed it up. I'm so proud of myself. I went out to Target yesterday and got so many of the plastic containers. Now I'm on a mission to organize this house today. Have you taken your tree down yet? http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=23637 ------------------------------ Real Moms: Money Saving Tips I just found out that at any Wal-Mart Vision Center, you get FREE refills on their small bottle of lens cleaner for life! It's only $1.99 to buy a small bottle and you just bring it in to any Wal-Mart when it is empty, and they will refill it for free. One small bargain. -- Angela, 33, from VA We shop the specials in our regular grocery store, and build menus around them. We plan the week's menu in advance, based on what's in the freezer from previous 'specials' and then add other ingredients. Make one night vegetarian, and include ethnic cooking (Mexican, Chinese, Indian) which tends to use less or no meat. -- Evelyn, 40, from Ontario ------------------------------ Coming Soon: A new look for Mommysavers! |
