Money/Time Saving Tips:

Kid Fun
Yesterday I received a package in the mail and they had used
long pieces of butcher paper to cushion the contents (like,
5 ft. long). So, I got the paper and taped it to one side of
our fence in the back yard. Then I got some brushes and washable
poster paints and let the kids go to town! They loved it!
DD #1 came up w/ an idea to paint a beach scene, and now we
have a lovely ocean view adorning our backyard! -- Lisa from Texas

Birthday Parties
Parting gift bags can be expensive. One idea is to have a scavenger
hunt in your backyard, which will give them a parting gift bag
plus a wonderful outdoor activity. Give each child a plastic shopping bag as
they line up to go outside to play. Have them hunt for inexpensive wrapped
candy, bubbles, and other items you can buy in small bulk packets for $1
like pens, pencils, markers, chalk, crayons, rulers, etc. --Molly

Pet Hair
Pet hair on furniture, especially upholstery with a heavy nap, can be a
pain to get rid of!  It just doesn't vacuum off!  Try this trick:  use a
pair of standard cleaning gloves (think "the yellow kind"), and start at
one end of the couch, and wipe!  Cat hair, especially, comes off like magic!
It wads all up in a big ball, and you can just pick it off!  My mom bought
some fancy sponge to do this with, and my idea worked better - and it
sure was cheaper! -- Kim

Mommysavers Feedback:

"I just had to comment on (the article "The Frugal Mom's Favorite Things")
from your Mommysavers
newsletter this week.  While I agree that most of us could not afford these
things, I would like to point out that the guests that were on the show were
Katrinia volunteers, one being my sister, who gave up ALL creature comforts
for a month and worked her butt off in New Orleans.  As a side note, she
turned around and gave all but one of Oprah's "things" away, to her family,
friends, to firefighters who helped with the relief effort, to people she
had met in the area who had nothing.  So, while it was extravagant, it's
also nice to know that many of those who received such things were in turn
extravagant in their giving!" -- Wanda O., a frugal mom in Loveland CO

Editor's Note: What the Katrina volunteers did was commendable and it
certainly wasn't my intention to undermine their hard work.  I'm glad Oprah has turned
to giving her "favorite" things to deserving people.  Kudos to the woman who
gave away all her great things to other volunteers as well!
