I went for groceries the other day and spent $89 but came out with more than I would have at a regular store. I have to say it was a lot better than I had expected. They had alot of foods that had you bought something similar in a regular grocery store would have paid probably 50% more for. -- Username Memz Waste Not, Want Not Don't waste what you buy. I use every last crumb of everything. I run the ends of the bread or any going stale through the food processor for bread crumbs. Any left overs become lunch or soups, I never buy lunch meats or any special food for lunch. In the summer, I use the clothesline instead of the dryer. We have a huge vegetable garden and can and freeze tons of stuff. We pick our own apples and can apple sauce. Stock up when there are sales or shop at food stores like Save-a-Lot or Aldis, they are cheaper. -- Username momof2crazyboys Fun, Free Summer Activities *Libraries usually have a list of summer programs to go to (pet shows, game days, themed parties, storytimes, etc...). *Toysrus has Camp Geoffry during the summer. The kids do crafts and other fun activities and usually get free stuff (hat, t-shirt, flip-flops, stickers, comic books). You have to stop by for a schedule. *Home Depot has free kids activities to. Kids and their moms or dads can build wagons, bird houses, etc.... *Some AMC movie theaters have free G and PG movies every Wednesday. *There are plenty of Vacation Bible Schools going on at churches. They are free and almost like a summer camp. * Barnes and Noble has storytime and family night year round. *Also, check out the community calendar in your local newspaper for free and cheap events going on around town. -- Username AudreyT324 These ideas appeared in our Frugal Living Forums: http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showforum=20 ------------------------------ HOT Deals: *More Amazon toys with FREE SHIPPING *Book bargains *4x6 Prints: Get the second set for FREE from Photoworks *Children's Place Monster Sale - $9.99 and under *FREE 2006 Entertainment Book All of the deals above appear on our Hot Deals page: http://www.mommysavers.com/money-saving-ideas/hot-deals.shtml ------------------------------ Deals for Moms: $100 Tupperware Surprise Packs for $39!! I printed off a calendar for each month from June to June. I painted the bottom of Bryan's feet and had him step on the edge of the tag board. Then on the bottom of the tag board I added his handprints. In the middle was the calendar and a picture of the two of them together. -- Susan, 33, from NE For Father's Day this year, I am having the kids wash, dry, and vacuum his car out for him in the morning as a surprise to him! He loves his car to be shiny and clean. -- Kelli, 35, from MN For more ideas, visit: http://www.mommysavers.com/frugal-holidays/frugal-fathers-day-gift- ideas.shtml ------------------------------ Thrifty Tips Get Firewood Now, Don't Wait for Winter You can save money on firewood by getting it in early summer and late spring. For starters, you pay a premium the closer you get to cold weather. And, you don't have to limit yourself to buying firewood that is completely dry, it will cure over the summer months and be ready to burn when you need it. Preparing to Paint If you are painting, an hour or two spent preparing the room will have huge a impact on the final result. Remove molding, outlet covers, and light fixtures so that they don't get paint on them. Anything that you can't remove, cover with plastic or masking tape. Your reward will be a much more attractive and professional looking paint job. On my little shopping trip today I noticed that there are a few things that I can get at my dollar general cheaper than Wal-mart or Aldi's. My question is, is there anything you get better deals on there or is the dollar store not worth what you pay for it? http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=34723 Stockpiling: I visited a grocery shopping/couponing type website and people posted photos of their grocery/cleaning/paper goods/personal care products. Some of the stuff these people had was incredible! Some could open their own mini-mart! So I am trying to figure out- WHY? and HOW? I clip coupons, my store doubles. I can see if you find a great deal on peanut butter, cereal, paper towels, whatever. But how much do you all buy? Do any of you have 3 cases of canned soup, peaches, corn, etc.? Just wondering if I need to rethink my shopping habits a bit? http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=34288 To visit all the forums: http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php ------------------------------ What's Cooking: Honey Glazed Popcorn 3/4 cup butter or margarine 2/3 cup honey 2/3 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3 quarts popped popcorn 1-1/2 cups roasted peanuts Melt butter in large saucepan; stir in honey, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Bring to boil; stir constantly. Reduce heat to medium; boil without stirring for 5 minutes. Remove from heat; quickly stir in vanilla and soda. Place popcorn in large, heat-proof bowl; slowly pour syrup over popcorn while stirring. Add peanuts; mix thoroughly. Turn into 2 greased 15-1/4 x 10- 1/4x3/4-inch baking pans. Bake at 250°F for 45 minutes; stir every 15 minutes with spatula. Scrape honey mixture from pan and coat popcorn thoroughly each time. Remove from oven; cool. Break into serving-sized pieces. Store in tightly covered container. Makes 6 servings. -- Username ksmom This recipe came from our recipe archive: http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?act=SC&c=3 ------------------------------ Creative Kidstuff: Homemade Butter Carton of heavy whipping cream (left out to reach room temp. approx. 8 hrs) Jar with a tight lid (an old mayo jar works well) Pour the cream into the jar and take turns shaking. First you'll see little clumps form, then a ball (then it's done). It won't take too long since it is at room temp. Drain the buttermilk out. (You can use later in recipes) To keep longer, rinse the butter and using a wooden spoon press the water out against the bowl. Add a little salt if you like, and spread on crackers or bread. This came from our Creative Kidstuff forum: http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showforum=42 ------------------------------ Limited Time Only: Mommysavers Gear Tees, sweats, onesies, mugs, and much more...
