Mommysavers Newsletter - June 19, 2006 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "The trouble with being a parent is that by the time you are experienced, you are unemployed." -- Author Unknown ============================================================== Hello! After much contemplation (and seeing how much junk I REALLY have), I decided it was worth my time to have a garage sale. So, this week I'll be busy organizing the garage, marking my kids' clothes, and finding more stuff to sell. It has felt so liberating getting the excess clothing/furniture/knick-knacks out of the house! If you're thinking of having a sale, or just want to find the best bargains at other sales, scroll down to check out all our resources. Have a great week! The stuff you buy on sale and gets stuck in the back of the cabinet, the stuff that requires actual cooking and not just a heat and serve idea! -- Username Blessedwith6 Avoiding Unnecessary Spending Whenever my mom goes to Sam's Club, she calls and asks if I need anything. I give her my list and she picks up what I need. If I go with her and the kids, I always wind up getting more than what is on my list. Always. I also will send dh to the grocery store with a specific list. He rarely buys anything that's not on the list. I find that keeping myself out of the stores cuts down a lot on spending. -- Username jnbythesea These ideas appeared in our Frugal Living Forums: http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showforum=20 ------------------------------ HOT Deals: Overstock Deal of the Day Gap Summer Sale Aeolus Down Comforter $19.99 + FREE Shipping Ronco Food Dehydrator/Beef Jerky Maker/Yogurt Maker Mossimo handbags 75% off Disney Pixar's CARS boys underwear Brandon Thomas brown corduroy jacket 85% off Ladies' Microfiber Weatherproof jacket 80% off 4x6 Prints on sale at Photoworks All of the deals above appear on our Hot Deals page: http://www.mommysavers.com/money-saving-ideas/hot-deals.shtml ------------------------------ What's New: Picture of the Week: "Flower Girls" Submitted by Kim from MN "Sydney and her cousin looked so cute as flower girls for their Uncle Mark's wedding! http://www.mommysavers.com Real Mom Profile: Carrie, 25, from Wisconsin Carrie shares a photo of her family, along with her recipe for Crock Pot BBQ ribs... http://www.mommysavers.com/real-mom-profiles/6.18.2006-carrie.shtml Shopping at Aldi by Tawra Kellam I spend $250-$300 a month on groceries for my family of five. One of the best things I do to keep my budget is to do most of my food shopping at Aldi. Here are some shopping strategies to help you get the biggest bang for your buck at this store... http://www.mommysavers.com/money-saving-ideas/shopping-at-aldi.shtml ------------------------------ Thrifty Tips Juicy Hamburgers For a juicy hamburger, add one beaten egg for each pound of hamburger meat. Don't flatten burgers with your spatula, that presses out the juices. Putting Stubborn Lids on Tupperware If you are having a hard time putting a plastic lid on a tupperware type container, run the lid under hot water. It should fit much more easily. Baking Soda in Your Clothes Hamper Pour a little baking soda into the bottom of your hamper to help keep your dirty clothes smelling fresh. You can even keep a shaker with baking soda in it near your hamper to shake on top of your clothes when needed. A used and cleaned out parmesan cheese container makes a great shaker for baking soda. Lately, I've been reading up on how to get control of debt, saving, etc. Since we're on one income, I'm just not sure how we're ever going to get out of debt. It was easier when I worked, but I can't go back to work due to health problems. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone actually saves as much as the books tell you to save (10%). Do all of you have a college fund set up yet? Is there some trick to making this all work? I'm just so frustrated and stressed out right now. On mortgage weeks, we live check to check. http://www.mommysavers.com/discussion/index.php?showtopic=35309 Spending Less Support Group: Cutting Back on Grocery Budget I did some back math and saw my downfall was grocery shopping: $500-600 a month. That is WAY too high for two adults and a 2 year old. The problem is, I live right behind a grocery store and walk to it 4x a week to find deals and to just "get a little this, a little that." As of tomorrow, I'm taking $250 out of checking and buying $250 worth of gift certificates. That's my budget for the month.
