"Bringing up a family should be an adventure, not an anxious discipline in
which everybody is constantly graded for performance."  -- Milton R.
Saperstein

==============================================================

Hello!

This past weekend my MOMS Club members and I enjoyed shopping and
socializing at the Mall of America.  We even stayed overnight!  Talk about a
nice break from my normal routine.

Today we had snow in Minnesota -- enough to stick to the ground.  I'm not sure if I'm ready for this!

Have a good week!

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Cold Season
For a sore throat use a solution of vinegar and water!  I tried this myself
and it really works much faster than over the counter remedies.  Gargle a
solution made as strong as you can stand it and then swallow.  Even if your
kids aren't old enough to gargle, they can still swallow it and get relief.
The vinegar kills the bacteria that irriates the throat, so healing begins
immediately, too.  -- Kelly, 35, from IN

Bath Time
My daughter loves to splash in the tub.  After months of the inevitable
arguments about water on the floor, I purchased a clear shower curtain for
her tub.  This way, I can pull the shower curtain closed, and she can splash
away.  Plus, I can safely watch her through the curtain.  The kind I bought
was about $5, and had a few ducks painted on it, which matched her bathroom,
but I have seen so many styles since then.  A clear shower curtain is the
way to go for toddlers! -- Michelle, 35, from VA

Cheap Bubble Bath/ Conditioning Bath
I use the Ultra Dawn for $1.96 at Wal-Mart. It makes a lot of bubbles, and
cleans your tub.  For a conditioning bubble bath I have found about two
squirts of cheap shampoo (Dollar Tree with Vitamins in it) for normal hair
works great on the skin. You can vary the amount to your taste. Also both of
the above bubble baths together make a long lasting bubble foam. Also with
Ultra Dawn you can make homemade Bubble Solution.  Mix 2 ounces of Dawn
Ultra with 5-6 cups of water. Add extra soap or water as needed, then for a
better bubbble recipe add 1 ounce of glycerin, avaiable at most drug stores
for cheap, then for industrial strength add all of the above ingredients and
then add 4-16 ounces of Mr. Bubbles by Tootsietoy.  I use the big bubble
wands and we make huge bubbles that last. Also for a conditioning oil that
disperses through the water, castor oil is great, and you can add essesntial
oils to it to make it scented, but make sure that you cl
ean your tub afterwards...this may be a great time for a Dawn Ultra bubble
bath. Happy Bubble Time! -- Danielle, 27, from LA

Mommysavers Asks:  Discipline

Raising kids can be tough.  What discipline issues do you deal with and how
do you solve them?  What methods have worked for you?  Here are some of our
readers' responses:

"A very unique and effective discipline tool that I've used over the years
is having my children write. If they break a rule, I make them write a
certain number of sentences about the rule. For instance, if my sons forget
their homework, they have to fill up the front and back of a piece of paper
with the sentence, "I will remember to bring home my spelling journal." My
older boys have to write a letter to me, explaining what they did, why it
was wrong, and apologizing and asking for forgiveness. These ideas work so
much better than lecturing or spanking or revoking privileges, because they
force the children to focus on the unacceptable behavior for a long time,
and really think through the consequences and implications of that choice."

"I have a 3 and a 1 year old. My biggest discipline issue right now is with
my 3 year old daughter. She is a whiner. What we have discovered that works
(with this problem as well as others) is the 1 2 3 Magic program. It is
WONDERFUL!!! It works with children ages 2-12. I recommend that you actually
get the book and/or the video and read and/or watch the whole thing before
starting because although the process is simple, there are some very
important things for the parents to know in order to make this successful
EVERYTIME. But in a nutshell, I am able to get the behavior that I want by
the count of 3 almost everytime. How? She knows that if I count to 3 she
will have to spend 5 minutes in her room. Now, I know this sounds too simple
to work...it isn't...BUT, like I said before, you MUST get the book (go to
the library and check it out) and read it first. It is the best thing I ever
did!!"

What's Cookin':  VERY YUMMY Pumpkin Pancakes (taken from pumpkin pie recipe
on Libby's 100% Pumpkin can)

I decided to attempt this after seeing a commercial on TV for IHOP's pumpkin
pancakes because we can't afford to eat out.  It turned out so yummy and my 2 year old
quadruplets just LOVE them!!!  They are great for just the family or for
guests!  Drizzle maple syrup on them and they're fantastic!!  You can also add
pecans or walnuts or dried fruit to the batter before pouring onto a griddle
and they're even better!!  Please check the amounts for the ingredients on
the can - I'm writing this by memory because I don't presently have a can in
the house.  Sorry all!

3/4 cup sugar (or sugar substitute)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
2 eggs
1 can Libby's 100% Pumpkin (not the pie filling)
1 12oz. can evaporated milk (can also use regular skim, 1%, 2% or whole milk
for lower fat and sugar content)
Bisquick (or your favorite pancake mix)

Follow the recipe for pumpkin pie on the Libby's 100% pumpkin can (if you've
never tried making the pie, you should sometime - best pumpkin pie ever!),
but omit the pie shell.  Add Bisquick (or your favorite pancake mix) to the
batter until thick.  You want the batter thicker than your normal pancake
batter because the pumpkin makes it very moist, and your pancakes will
otherwise come out flat and dense.  Pour desired amount onto hot griddle (on
a lower temp than you usually cook pancakes).  They will cook a bit slow,
but the wait is well worth it!!!  Happy Fall!!!! -- Julie, 33, from NC

Real Moms:  Organization

Save empty tissue boxes to dispense plastic grocery store bags. -- Donna,
38, from AL

Get your housework done first thing in the morning.  Then you don't have to
dread it all day.  Also, if your kids are old enough and you have trouble
keeping them busy while you clean, see if you can get them involved.  My son
loves to play with the vacuum cleaner attachments.  He pretends to vacuum
everything. -- Rachel, 22, from CO

I have two young children in pre-school and first grade.  They both get so
many papers from school...some that need to be sent back, library books and
some "special" papers that I may want to save. So I bought a plastic
3-drawer organizer to put their schoolwork in.  Each child has their own
drawer and the 3rd drawer is used for coupons.  This way I don't throw
anything important away and everything stays organized, eliminating
clutter. -- Angie, 27, from VA

Fun for You and Your Kids:  Dry Leaf Collage

You'll need:
Construction paper
Scissors
Dry leaves
Glue stick

Cut one or two leaf shapes out of construction paper.  Crinkle up dry leaves
until they're in fairly small pieces (this may be your toddler's favorite
part).  Spread glue on one side of the construction paper leaf and sprinkle
with dry leaf pieces.  If you like, punch a hole in the construction paper
and hang to display.
