A: Of all the artificial sweeteners on the market, sucralose (Splenda) seems to be the safest. It works great in cooking & can easily be substituted cup for cup. The other popular substitute, aspartame (also knows as Equal, NutraSweet, or Nutra Taste) is probably safe, but certain people with a rare disorder called phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid aspartame completely. Aspartame is made from two amino acids, aspartic acid & phenylalanine. Some people believe aspartame to be the cause of everything from headaches to multiple sclerosis to Alzheimer's disease. There is no scientific evidence to back up such claims. Besides, the human body is not that generic. One single compound is not the cause of all human ailments and diseases. Anything used in excess can be unhealthful for our bodies. Personally, I do use sugar substitutes but try hard to do so in moderation. I prefer to use sugar substitutes in foods that are normally very high in sugar, such as beverages, maple syrup, or baked goods. I also use sugar substitutes to sweeten some cereals or desserts. Otherwise, I just go for a serving of pure cane sugar.
