The Graham E-Gazette: Judicial Nominations/Harriet Miers In this issue we will cover the Nomination of Harriet Miers. The articles below all look at some facet of the nomination as well as including a tribute to Sen. Graham. For More articles, commentary, and letters go to The Graham Gazette. News The Nomination 22 October 2005 ![]() Harriet Miers in an official White House Photograph. Source: White House It has been an interesting two weeks to say the least. President Bush nominates White House Counsel Harriet Miers to be Associate Justive of the Supreme Court. She would fill the seat of retiring justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The conservtive activists in the Republican party throw a fit over this nomination and blame the Group of 14, notably Lindsey Graham and John McCain for the lackluster nominee becasue they wanted a fight. They did not get their fight because McCain, Graham and 12 other senators forged a compromise. However, they blamed this group for the lackluster nomination eventhough everyone knows that George W Bush most likely would have named her anyway becasue he likes to promote those who are loyal to him. Commentary Give Miers a Break: Sure I Will 18 October 2005 Ms. Miers Meets with Sen. Graham ![]() Sen. Graham meets with Harriet Miers, a judicial nominee, in his office. Source: Reuters I will give Harriet Miers a break and listen closely to what she says in the upcoming hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee. However, it will have little to do woth Melanie Kirkpatrick's Opinion Journal column Give Her a Break I will listen and evaluate becasue it is the fair and correct thing to do in looking at everynominee for any position. I originally was a part of the revolt but was called back to conscience by Lindsey Graham, who rightly demanded a little quiet so we could learn who Ms. Miers is and about her views on important constitutional questions. Tribute Favorite Republican Senator 8 October 2005 ![]() Source: U.S. Senate Lindsey Graham Sen. Graham was elected in 2002 to serve the entire state of South Carolina by a 55-45 margin. He must represent the two Democratic districts (5 & 6) as well as those that are represented by Republicans. He is making a valiant effort to do so and we should be proud of his effort. The latest Survey USA tracking poll showed that Sen. Graham has a 57% approval rating which is up 3% from the poll taken on 11 July. Even 64% of South Carolina conservatives give their approval. Sen. Graham is a hard-core conservative. His ratings are consistently high with groups like the American Conservative Union (91% lifetime), the National Taxpayr’s Union (B+), Americans for Tax reform (85%), and The Citizens Against Government Waste (88% lifetime). The Republican Liberty Caucus classifies Graham as an Enterpriser, which means he advocates for a moderate amount of personal and economic liberty along with “good” government programs. Letter Harriet Miers 6 October 2005 I jumped the gun on my criticism. I should have posed it as a theory and not acted as if it were a fact. I respect your opinion and am now 'predisposed' to change my mind based on that opinion since I do not get to talk to her myself. I apologize for taking a 'cheap shot' at her and President Bush. That was unfair. |
