OPPORTUNITIES

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Not for profit organisation

Spectrum Employment Services Co-Operative is a largely self-funded, not for profit organisation based in Marrickville. Our purpose is to alleviate poverty and improve the prosperity of the communities in which we work, by providing training, education and employment opportunities for the unemployed.

We want to make a short documentary - 10 minutes or so - about the range of services we offer and how our work impacts communities. This doco will be used to tell our story, encourage more support and raise funds.

Spectrum Property, Landscape and Community Services Divisions provide training and employment opportunities to socially and economically disadvantaged social housing residents…think Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Foundation, but an Australian version, for all ages.

We offer unemployed, disadvantaged people the chance to train in a professionally recognised qualification, get qualified, earn an income and break free from the cycle of poverty. Trainees are assisted through the course (including being provided free counselling) and we even help them find a job when they qualify.

As a not-for-profit agency, all surplus funds are invested back into community employment, training and education programs, so our starting budget is zero.

What we are looking for is a creative team or person to offer their services to help us work towards building better communities. In return we can offer you access to extraordinary talent and material, a chance to work on a truly unique project and branding opportunities for your business on Spectrum media.

INDUSTRY PLACEMENT
The Australian Writers' Foundation & Southern Star Children's Television Production Initiative
Applications for the Australian Writers' Foundation and Southern Star Children's Television Production Initiative close 6.00pm Friday, 20 October 2006.

The successful candidate will receive an industry placement with Southern Star Entertainment beginning in January 2007 (exact dates and duration are to be finalised depending on the production) allowing them to participate in script development meetings of a children's television production. The writer will also receive $5,000 for expenses (including air fares and accommodation if based outside of Sydney).

This fantastic career opportunity, announced at the 2006 AWGIE Awards, aims to give a writer exposure to the specialised requirements of writing for a children's audience and help develop an awareness of the disciplines peculiar to story telling for children.

Applications are invited from both new writers and those who have experience in other areas of performance writing, such as adult drama. What is required however is a genuine aspiration to want to write television stories for children, be it animated or live action, pre-school or "C" drama.

Applicants must be members of the Australian Writers' Guild and in their applications should state why they want to write for children's television; what visions or goals they have in this genre; and list any relevant writing credits.

Applications (2 pages maximum) should be sent to admin@awg.com.au with "Southern Star Placement" in the subject header. Applications close 20 October 2006 and the successful candidate will be announced on Friday 15 December 2006. The judges' decision will be final. Both full and associate members of the Guild are welcome to apply.

OZFLIX
Australian film weekend

Australians travel to and live in all four corners of the world, and it is in our nature to want to share our wonderful country, culture and film with those we come into contact with. Two Toronto-based festival veterans – Shane Smith and Eileen Arandiga — noticed that there was a decided lack of Australian shorts, documentaries and feature length film on offer in North America, and in 2005 founded OzFlix: Australian Film Weekend to remedy that.

OzFlix not only exposes Canadian audiences to the best in Australian film, but plays a crucial role in forging stronger relationships between Australian production companies, distributors and filmmakers and North American buyers, broadcasters, future production partners and other festivals. OzFlix: Australian Film Weekend is an Austrade supported event and works closely with Austrade to further expand the export opportunities for Australian film into North America.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
1. All non-English language films must have English subtitles.
2. Films must be available for Festival screening on 35mm, Beta SP NTSC/PAL or digiBETA NTSC/ PAL.
3. Preview tapes will not be returned. After the Festival, tapes will be archived and made available to buyers and distributors upon request.
4. DO NOT send tapes in fibre-filled envelopes as the dust can damage tapes and viewing equipment.
6. All selected films may be excerpted (up to 2 minutes) for publicity purposes.

Spices up the city in Spring
Sydney will host the Sydney African Film Festival for the first time ever this October.

The festival runs from Friday 27th – Sunday 29th October at the Footbridge Theatre, and will showcase Oscar winning feature “Tsotsi” plus highly acclaimed films never before released in Australia. All films have been selected and presented in collaboration with the New York African Film Festival.

Opening night is not to be missed. Moviegoers will be charmed by traditional drummers and delicious African cuisine courtesy of the African Feeling Café.

With a focus on providing a medium for African stories to be told with an African voice, the Sydney African Film Festival will screen four features and six short films. Amongst the collection is “Waiting for Valdez” winner of Best Short Film at the 24th annual Durban Film Festival screening opening night along with “Noura’s Summer” and “The Little Girl who Sold the Sun”.

Festival organisers favourite, “Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon” is a probing ficto-documentary from director Kahalo Matabane. Set in Johannesburg the film delivers lucid insights into the fractious lives co-existing in post-apartheid South Africa.

The festival is being staged to celebrate African culture and raise money for Hands of Help – a grass roots charity that sends young volunteers to Africa to improve the health and education of people living in poverty.

This summer over fifty Hands of Help volunteers will return to poverty stricken areas in Africa with plans to refurbish schools in rural Uganda, run health seminars and build an orphanage in Kenya for over 350 homeless children.

So come along the Sydney African Film Festival where you’ll get a rare peek at exciting new African films as well as a good old dose of warm and fuzzies for helping a great cause!

Tickets may be purchased at the door or through moshtix www.moshtix.com.au
