PRODUCING FOR FILM + TELEVISION
March 6 – May 1

A comprehensive training course in the role of the producer. Learn how to produce a film or TV series, from recognising a good concept right through to distribution. This VETAB accredited course is packed with a huge amount of invaluable information. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a concept for a TV series or film, write a synopsis and practice pitching to the group. Film and Television finance is covered in-depth, with an explanation of various Government funding programmes and the types of product that Australian and International broadcasters commission and buy. The legal responsibilities of a producer are also covered, with topics such as copyright, options and clearances demystified. Participants receive comprehensive course notes and valuable production templates. On completion you will have the confidence and the know-how to set up your own production office, build your own budgets, raise funds and start filmmaking.

TUTOR: CAROLYN JOHNSON
Following a career in merchant banking, Carolyn moved into film production in 1993. She is an AFTRS graduate, who has produced six award winning short films, and worked as a producer, production manager and script editor in television documentary and drama. Along with a TV drama and documentary in development, Carolyn currently has her first feature film in post-production.

On successful completion students receive a Statement of Attainment from the Certificate IV in Screen.

Five Day Workshop in Mobile Media Creation

Metro Screen is now accepting applications for Homage, an innovative and heavily subsidised mobile media content creation workshop. March 26 – 30.

Create content for portable devices, including mobile phones, wireless computers and portable media players.
Applications close March 2.

COURSE OUTLINE
The workshop will cover writing, capturing, editing, recording, conforming and compressing using the latest digital media tools and techniques in a hands-on environment. By the end of the workshop you will have learnt to create your own mobile phone playable movie, a website and a DVD.

THEME
Think of one person you admire, adore, hold in high regard, or just think is pretty damn cool. Be they a figure of myth, mirth or history, your best friend or ex-lover, or maybe just someone you met in the street, saw on a train or went to school with. FILM SCHOLARSHIP IN NEWCASTLE
Deadline for Applications March 9

Metro Screen is running a Film Scholarship program in the Newcastle area between March and June 2007.

Each student will produce a 7-25 minute film about their lives, and will be involved in all areas from scriptwriting to shooting, editing, sound design and grading.

Be taught by industry professionals and start your career in film and video. This course is fully funded by DET (The Department of Education & Training), with students only paying an enrolment fee of $275 for this 13 week course, valued at over $4000.

Metro Screen is pleased to announce our partnership with Apple Australia and new status as an Apple Authorised Training Centre. This means that students enrolling in our Final Cut Pro 5 editing courses may now receive both Apple and VETAB accreditation – a tremendously valuable qualification.

Taught by an Apple Certified trainer and following Apple’s ‘Pro’ training syllabus, this course is designed for beginners looking to edit professional quality video using Final Cut Pro 5. It introduces participants to the primary feature set and basic interface of Final Cut Pro in an interactive teaching environment. Learn to perform basic editing functions while familiarising yourself with the user interface. Sony and Mac

Metro Screen clients can produce HDV projects utilising our 24 hour access edit suite. Clients can now shoot using the HVR Z1P and edit on Metro Screens new Quad 2.5Ghz PowerPC G5, digitising from a Sony HVR-M10U HDV. This fully self contained 24 hour edit suite can accommodate HDV and down convert for SD output or output back to HDV.

This edit suite comes fully self contained; equipped with bathroom facilities, small kitchen and lounge area, clients can hire on an hourly, half daily, daily and 24hour rate.

Metro Screen’s comprehensive editing facilities also include three Final Cut Pro 5 edit suites running Studio 5 and the Edit Café opened 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, where clients can edit at an affordable rate on G5 iMac’s using Studio 5.

Metro Screen Funding Opportunity
Offering $40,000 in subsidy to film and screen productions in NSW.

Applications for the first of four rounds in 2007 is March 5.

Jump Start can provide you with subsidised access to reliable, sort after equipment, current technical facilities and production support.

For many filmmakers the thought of facing a funding application can seem overwhelming and for those who have been unsuccessful the question they are left with is WHY?

This Panel will shed some light on that question and break down the funding application into easily managed parts.

Valerie Allerton | NSW Film and Television Office
Valerie has been at the NSW Film and Television Office for 3 years. She started in the Script Development and Production Investment department before taking the role of the Coordinator of the Young Filmmakers Fund of Digital Visual FX Placement Scheme, which she had been working in for the past year.

Mark Lazarus | Australian Film Commission
Mark is currently a Project Manager for the AFC. Mark has produced Australian Rules and Ravenswood (currently in post-production), he was Head of Development and Acquisitions at Ocean Pictures, where he brought a range of projects to the company, including Rabbit-Proof Fence. Mark worked as the Creative Affairs Executive at Fox Icon Productions, where he developed amongst others The Rage in Placid Lake.

Kath Shelper | Film and TV Producer
Kath has produced the successful half-hour films Plains Empty and Green Bush in association with the AFC and SBS Independent, with additional funding for Plains Empty from the NSW FTO and South Australian Film Corporation. Kath was supervising producer on the SBSi/AFC series Dreaming in Motion, and is currently putting the finishing touches on a new series of 13 x 5 minute dramas for AFC/SBS called Bit of Black Business

Electrofringe 2007 is now calling for proposals for this year's festival from artists, media makers, curators, researchers, writers, producers, enthusiasts …anyone really. Also we are calling for submissions of both online works and screen works for inclusion in this year's festival.

Electrofringe is a 5-day festival of electronic arts and culture featuring national and international artists and occurring as part of the 'This Is Not Art' festival in Newcastle, NSW. The festival is dedicated to unearthing emergent forms, presenting innovative work and encouraging participants to explore technology collaboratively through skills development and exchange.

Deadline for Proposals is Saturday March 31, and the deadline for Online & Screen Works is Thursday May 31.

40TH ANNUAL AWGIE AWARDS
Are Open for Entries

The AWGIE Awards, the Australian Writers' Guild's (AWG) annual awards for excellence in screen, television, stage and radio writing are now open for entries.

This year’s AWGIE Awards, to be held in Sydney on August 31, 2007 are an important milestone in the history of Australian performance writing and a range of ground breaking industry scholarships, fellowships, and special prizes will be presented across theatre, film and television.

Also in 2007 the AWG’s recognition of emerging talent will increase. The Monte Miller Award, presented for an unproduced script by an Associate Member, will be divided into two categories. The Short Form Monte Miller will be awarded for scripts of thirty minutes and less and the Long Form Award will be for scripts over thirty minutes.

Entry to the 40th Annual AWGIE Awards is open to financial members of the AWG and scripts must have been produced in between 1 January and 31 December 2006. Entry forms and details are available to download from www.awg.com.au or email admin@awg.com.au or call 1300 552 228.

THE 15/15 FILM FESTIVAL
Workshop March 5

This workshop will be chaired by Amadeo Marquez-Perez, Managing Director of 15/15 and will cover essential information about pre-production, production and post-production.

Films from 2005-2006 will also be screened and a detailed discussion about how to make a fantastic short film in 15 hours.

We have launched our new website with films to watch and an online database to promote your film. Our screening venue is confirmed, Chauvel Cinema for the 31st of May and Filming Day scheduled for Saturday the 10th of March. We are looking for filmmakers in Sydney to take up the challenge to make a short film that is up to 15 minutes in length in 15 hours.

We have numerous filmmakers registered and are looking forward a providing a film workshop to assist local filmmakers.

OZ SILENT FILM FESTIVAL
Mar 30 – Apr 1

Buster Keaton, Chaplin, Hitchcock and many others are joining several thousand of us in a glamorous Festival! We are organising the inaugural Australia’s Silent Film Festival with the support of the NSW Deaf Society it will take place in Sydney over three days in late March this year. The venue is the sublime Hayden Orpheum in Cremorne and one session at the NSW Art Gallery on April 1.

The festival will feature recognized and rare masterpieces, lovingly restored, from Australia and around the world. These outstanding films are presented as they were originally intended to be shown with musical soundtrack accompaniment, often live.

On Wednesday, 7th March at 6.30pm, we are hosting a home-style 'bring a plate' party to celebrate our new community of art and media makers in Sydney. sQuareOne is a media arts and community incubator for young people (up to 30), a space in Sydney dedicated to morphing ideas and making them a sustainable reality. It is a hub, an exhibition space and a creative lab. Throughout the year, sQuareOne will manage innovative programs that explore working as a freelance artist in the diverse communities in Sydney, new ways of storytelling using technology, and host a forum to explore ways to work, inspire and create. ‘The Saviour’, Oscar Nominee for Best Live Action Short, has been selected as one of 14 short films who will battle it out for over $35,000 in prizes as part of ‘In the Realm of the Senses 07’, outdoor short film festival to be held at the Collingwood Children’s Farm on Saturday March 3rd.

With DJ’s Benzai Zok, The Mafia Horse Connection and a feast of mouth watering food alongside live roving performers entertaining all afternoon until the films at dusk.

Get there early to secure a space. BYO comfort couch, dress to keep warm!

Metro Screen congratulates David Opitz Metro Screen’s Project Manager for his camera work on ‘The Pure Drop’ project. This online project saw 11 mini doc’s shot for viewing online at www.thepuredrop.com.au and on air on ABC2. Travelling half way around the world these documentaries chronicle unique music clips, interviews, lyrics, video, mp3s, musical notation, stories and maps.

Our pick for what to watch first is story number seven ‘Extreme Singing’.

Congratulations to all those involved in this innovative and extremely watchable project.
