DOCUMENTARY MAKING INTENSIVE

This hands-on course takes participants from the spark of an idea to post production in just a weekend. With expert tutor guidance, participants work in groups to develop an initial concept. They then create treatments or scripts for selected projects before shooting on digital equipment. Finally, students review the footage and assemble a paper edit. Participants rotate through key crew roles, learning skills such as working with non-actors, interviewing techniques, basic camera set-ups and sound recording.

CERTIFICATE III IN CINEMA PROJECTION

Metro Screen is proud to announce a new scholarship course to train students in all aspects of Cinema Projection. Individuals are invited to apply for a place on the course which runs from April 30th – May 18th and is funded by the NSW Dept of Education and Training.
 
Closing date for applications: Thursday April 12th 2007.
 
This course is your opportunity to gain a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of cinema projection. By the end of the course, students will have gained an excellent understanding of cinema projection and be prepared to seek employment in the industry,
 
Metro Screen will be conducting the course in conjunction with our industry partner, the Chauvel Cinema, operated by Palace Cinemas. Students will have access to the venue and to a number of different projectors for hands-on experience. The course will be taught by Alan Butterfield, one of Australia’s most experienced projectionists.
 
The course is accredited and subject to assessment, students will receive a Statement of Attainment from the Certificate III in Cinema Projection.

YOUTH FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
This Easter Holidays

Metro Screen’s youth unit Channel Free is running its ever popular School Holiday workshop for 11 – 16 year olds, from April 18 - 20.

Are you ready to make a film in three days? "Lights, Camera, Action"?

This intensive three day video making course is open to all levels of experience and will develop your overall skills in producing quality video projects. The experience gained and skills learned on this course can be used for film projects, television projects and digital media screen productions. And it’s fun!

Young people with little or no prior video production experience are encouraged to enrol.
 
Cost: $230 [All Channel Free workshops are highly subsidised through the
Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. This course is valued at over $550 per participant. Channel Free can offer further course fee subsidies to lower-income families.

SPEED NETWORKING PRESENTED BY
Metro Screen Network - Tuesday May 1st, 6.30pm

Formerly the Members Production Group, Metro Screen Network is celebrating the relaunch with a networking event!

What
Network with more people in an hour than you will all year.

Speed Networking is a night to bring like-minded filmmakers together in a social environment where contacts and collaborations can be made. Attendees will have opportunities to chat with representatives from a cross section of the filmmaking community, which includes YOU.

The structure of the night will allow you to be introduced to a potential new contact every few minutes.

So if you’re looking for a new project, for collaborators, scouting for cast and crew, or just want a foot in the door this is your opportunity.

Who
Filmmakers with backgrounds in various crew roles will be invited to this event where meeting and greeting will be the name of the game. Our invitation list will include: producers, directors, writers, actors, casting directors, production managers and industry associations – you never know who you’re going to meet.

SOUND EDITOR WANTED
PAID

Sound editor is required to complete the finishing stages of a short film project which went into production late July. It stars two well-known actors, Wil Traval (All Saints) and Khan Chittenden (Caterpillar Wish). A sound editor is required to do foley and soundtrack to 5.1 surround sound as well as sound effects etc. this film once finished will do the festival circuit and be taken to Los Angeles to the international short film festival next year.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR WANTED
Unpaid, work experience position

Independent short film production with established industry team. The production involves AFI Award winner and Emmy Award nominee visual FX specialist Mike Seymour, Award winning special effects company Make-up and Effects Group (The Matrix Trilogy, Babe, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Charlotte's Web) and director Spencer Susser. Susser has an established career as both an editor and director of television commercials and music videos.

This is a great opportunity for a smart, self-motivated, enthusiastic and hard working filmmaker with aspirations to produce to be a part of a high quality production. You will assist the producer in aspects of pre production and coordinating the shoot. You will also get to meet and work with a team of talented filmmakers.

Please note that this is a volunteer position (unpaid). Driver's license and own car essential.

Shoot dates: Unconfirmed, but will be a 3-day shoot some time between 22nd – 30th April. Commitment: 3-day shoot plus a number of flexible days during pre-production

WRITING FOR ANIMATION MASTERCLASS

The Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG) in consultation with the Screen Producers’ Association of Australia and with the generous assistance of Ambience  Entertainment, the content development arm of the Omnilab Media Group, and the New South Wales Film and Television Office present the Writing for Animation Masterclass.
 
This free Masterclass series will provide writers with an in-depth analysis of the different forms of animation and the disciplines required to write for them. Upon completion of the Masterclass Ambience Entertainment will select three participants for a professional attachment to one of their programs.

The Writing for Animation Masterclass is part of the AWG’s ongoing commitment to providing members with relevant and rewarding professional development opportunities.

The Masterclasses will be held in Sydney on 21-22 July, 28-29 July and
4-5 August, and open to members of the AWG who already have experience in live-action television or other media.

PODLOVE 2 INITIATIVE

AFC and SBSI are currently seeking challenging stories about how technology
affects relationships in the 21st Century.

Creative teams are encouraged to check out the first series of Podlove at
www.sbs.com.au/podlove, then with that as inspiration, put forward an idea
for a 25 minute program for Podlove 2.

Your idea should push the boundaries of the documentary form and production
technology.

SBSi expects Podlove 2 to be shown to a  20-45 year old audience in a  10pm
{M} timeslot.

THE ABC OF DANCE 4 FILM

Arts Council England, Channel 4, Australia Council for the Arts and ABC Television are delighted to announce a new partnership that will allow the opportunity for the commissioning of new UK and Australian dance films and the purchase of existing dance films to be included in a presented program to be broadcast on Channel 4 and ABC television.

In 2003 Arts Council England and Channel 4 collaborated on the development and production of a four-part primetime series 4Dance.  In 2005 they again teamed up to produce Dance4Film, a 90-minute celebration of the best of dance on film, including five new dance films commissioned specially for the program. Both programs received critical acclaim and audience success.

Up to 7 new dance films may be commissioned with original choreography, direction and sound, and should be as interesting filmically as they are choreographically. We welcome proposals for films ranging from 30 seconds to 6 minutes in duration; with budgets ranging from ?2,000 – ?14,000 / AU$5,000 - AU$35,000. Australian productions may have the opportunity to access production resources through ABC Television.  

All successful Australian dance film applicants will be teamed up with a designated Australian production company to produce the film. We welcome collaborations between Australian and UK artists, in which case, please submit your application to the country of the director.

THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL
Deadline for entries is May 31

You can be any age to participate but must be a student when the film/video was produced.

Visit www.studentfilmfestival.org to print out a submission form or to view last year's entries.  Entries must be received in NTSC format and printed on mini DV or DVD (mini dv preferred) Videos that do not win will still be included in the film festival clip reel and posted on the website.


JAMESON SHOW ME SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL
Calling for entries

Just visit www.showmeshorts.co.nz now to download the entry form. It’s free to enter, and this year selected films will be shown not only in Auckland, but also Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Entries must be between three and thirty minutes long and must have been completed after 31 December 2003. Business Director Tamara Liebman says, “During 2006 we were proved right about the strong demand from the public to see more great short films, and about the large number of entertaining films available for us to screen. This year we are expecting even more entries than last year’s 500. This will enable us to select a diverse range of around 50 top quality films to play in themed sessions.”

Winners will be announced on opening night for Best Film, Best Student Film, Best Technical Contribution and a Special Jury Prize. This way more people will have the opportunity to see the winning films.


MARGARET FARM ARTIST IN RESIDENCY

ArtsNSW has established the Margaret Farm Residency Project in Western Sydney in order to develop new contemporary art projects across the performing, literary and visual arts. Margaret Farm is a spacious mid-Victorian homestead – in a fabulous suburban setting at St Marys.  Submissions for project proposals from artists, creative teams and/or arts organisations wishing to research and/or develop new works are now welcome. Collaborative and international projects are encouraged to apply.

JELLY’S PLACENTA PREMIERE SCREENING

You are invited to the premiere screening of Jelly’s Placenta, written and directed by Christina Conrad, and produced by Melissa Anastasi.
 
Christina Conrad is the author of three books, two plays and several film scripts, and is also a celebrated artist. Her work has been published and exhibited internationally. A renowned script editor, Conrad has worked with a range of filmmakers including writer of Kokoda John Lonie, Khoa Doh writer/director of Footy Hero's. Jelly’s Placenta is Conrad’s directing debut.
 
Starring filmmaker Craig Boreham and the French actor Marc Carlis, Jelly’s Placenta is the story of the obsessed transvestite Leith (Carlis), who has been involved in a fifteen-year relationship with her lover, Jelly (Boreham), and Jelly’s dead mother, who Leith believes, has sent a rival lover to seduce Jelly.

OURMedia / Nuestros Medios is an international network and forum founded in
2001 by a group of engaged academics interested in advancing the democratic potential of community, alternative and citizens' media. Recognising that the intellectual and policy frameworks for citizens' media are often out of touch with the on-the-ground reality, the purpose of OURMedia is to connect scholars, practitioners, activists, artists, and policy-makers and to provide spaces for dialogue and exchange.

OURMedia is now a network of over 500 people from 50 countries.

Past OURMedia conferences have been held in the United States (2001), Spain
(2002), Colombia (2003), Brazil (2004) and India (2005). These conferences
featured academic presentations, media activism initiatives, policy

Sex, Death and Desire is a multi-media look into the connections between, religion, ecstasy, death and desire and the varying ways in which different cultures respond to these subjects. With a combination of screen projections and live performance involving music, song, spoken word, DJ-ing, VJ-ing and film Sex, Death & Desire runs for two nights only on 20 and 21 April in The Studio, Sydney Opera House.

Finds North American distribution

Frameline has asked for the distribution rights in North America (The United
States, Canada, Mexico and each country's territories) for a period of five years. For the very successful short ‘Stray’ make through Metro Screen’s Youth Unit Channel Free.
