FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

P O P C O R N T A X I
Monday, May 14th

Popcorn Taxi presents a special screening of one of the most powerful and important documentaries of the decade. Nominated for a 2007 Academy Award, DELIVER US FROM EVIL uncovers the story of Father Oliver O’Grady, the most notorious pedophile in the history of the modern Catholic Church, who over the course of twenty years used his charm and authority to abuse dozens of children across Northern California.

Following O’Grady’s incarceration and deportation, DELIVER US FROM EVIL filmmaker Amy Berg contacted him and, remarkably, persuaded him to participate in the making of her film. Using his chilling testimony as a launching point, Berg exposes the high-level corruption within the Church while attempting to understand why child abuse within this institution, still occurs today on a global scale.

Most importantly, Berg encourages several of O’Grady’s victims to finally speak out, shedding much-needed light on the horrifying legacy of sexual abuse, capturing startlingly candid confessions that will break your heart.

After the screening Writer / Director / Producer Amy Berg joins us via phone from New York to discuss her incredible journey making this film. See below for further information on the film, or view the trailer on-line HERE www.deliverusfromevilthemovie.com/index_flash.php

TIPPISANDRA ROAD
Photography exhibit

Tonight is opening night for Metro Screen tutor Tom Cowan’s photography exhibition at Gallery East 21 Burnie St Clovelly.

‘Tippisandra Road’ breathes in the energy and colour of life in the market street – caught at sunset, that magical time of day when light changes quickly… things that one moment are clear and sharp, at another have softened, dissolved. It is when light is at its most mysterious. ‘I first came into India from Pakistan at sunset… in a way this work responds to the enchantment I felt at that time’

Tom first visited India in 1968 at the invitation of Satyajit Ray, India’s greatest film director. He then met Sri Pattabhi Rama Reddy, a South Indian film producer and became his director photography on ‘SAMSKARA’, which won the prestigious President’s Award for Best Feature Film, beating Satyajit Ray’s film of that year.

Who will win Australian best newcomer and best documentary, and who will win the vh1 best movie moustache and the worst film of the year. Mixing the serious with the not-so-serious and the Australian with the international, this is an awards night with a difference.

Every person in attendance will receive a movie goodie bag and you can upgrade your ticket to also attend the glam after party at Hugos Lounge.

Metro Screen members, current Certificate IV in Screen students and Metro Screen staff can purchase tix for $45 for the awards only or $95 for awards and after-party. Simply call Dina @ Filmink on 9389 7855 to order your ticket. Remember to quote your member or students number.
