this course gives you hands on experience with broadcast quality equipment
that will enable you to graduate and step into a professional role of your

PAST GRADUATES
Graduates have gone on to start their own successful production
companies, be awarded at local and international film festivals,
work professionally on TV series, short films

Steve Crombie has now signed with RGM Associates
who represent: John Polson, Cate Blanchett and Anthony La Paglia. Steve
will have a segment on the Lonely Planet BlueList series screening
on SBS in June and has secured a book deal with Pan Macmillan.
Graciano Debeljah was offered one of only two
places on the Directing strand of a Bachelor in Media Studies at the Western
Australian Screen Academy [WASA].

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
June 05
This hands-on course takes participants from the spark of an idea to post
production in just a weekend. With expert tutor guidance, participants work
in groups to develop an initial concept. They then create treatments or
scripts for selected projects before shooting on digital equipment. Finally,
students review the footage and assemble a paper edit. Participants rotate
through key crew roles, learning skills such as working with non-actors,
interviewing techniques, basic camera set-ups and sound recording.

FLASH FUNDAMENTALS
Two Day Course
Taught in Metro Screen’s G5 Apple computer lab, this course is for
people who would like to learn to make original, animated web graphics using
Macromedia Flash software. Participants will develop an understanding of
the design and production of Flash movies, acquire basic animation and design
skills using Macromedia Flash and develop an understanding of the environment,
interface, tools, language possibilities and limitations of the software.

ADVANCED SCREENWRITING
June 13
With an interactive workshop style structure, this course will develop your
analytical skills and aid in identifying areas of your story to strengthen.
Each person will be given the opportunity to present a script, gain constructive
feedback and workshop ideas.
SPECIAL FEATURE | All participants are encouraged
to bring a first draft of a short film script, or 10 pages of a feature
film script for development.
TUTOR Alec Morgan | An experienced screenwriter
and filmmaker, Alec’s productions have screened on the ABC and internationally.
His feature Hunt Angels, was nominated for four AFI awards and screened
at Parliament House. Other credits include the multi-award winning Lousy
Little Sixpence [1984], Admission Impossible [1993] and The End Of The Earth
[1990].

DIRECTING WITH CATE SHORTLAND
At Metro Screen
Cate Shortland, Australian director of acclaimed productions including the
award winning Somersault starring Abi Cornish and ABC TV’s
The Silence with Richard Roxburgh, will take this intensive two-day
course at Metro Screen.
July 21 + 22.
COURSE DETAIL
With a maximum of 15 participants the course will focus on what directing
techniques are necessary to transform a script to the screen. Discover how
to gain truthful and honest performances through practical exercises with
actors. Explore the processes and techniques of casting, rehearsing and
directing actors with the aim of obtaining the best performances.
DAY ONE
Script breakdown, story analyses, style, genre, characters, casting, shot
listing and storyboarding. Examples of Cate’s The Silence
will be used.
DAY TWO
Casting, rehearsals, shooting and working with actors to develop directing
techniques. Including practical exercises with actors.
TUTOR
Cate Shortland’s first feature film Somersault won her an AFI, ASDA
Award, FCCA award and IF Award for Best Direction and her two part series
The Silence aired to critical acclaim last year on ABC. Cate has also
directed episodes of The Secret Life of Us and written and directed
four award winning short films: Strap onOlympia , Pentuphouse,
Flowergirl and Jo which received acclaim at the Oberhausen,
Tampere, Clermont-Ferrand, Berlin and London Film Festival.
Cate studied Fine Arts at Sydney University and has a Graduate Diploma in
directing from the AFTRS where she received the Southern Star Award for
most promising student.

YOUTH FILMMAKING WORKSHOP
11 – 16 Year Olds

Metro Screen’s youth unit Channel Free is running its ever popular
School Holiday workshop next school holidays July 4 – 6.
Are you ready to make a film in three days?
"Lights, Camera, Action"?
This intensive three day video making course is open to all levels of experience
and will develop your overall skills in producing quality video projects.
The experience gained and skills learned on this course can be used for
film projects, television projects and digital media screen productions.
And it’s fun!

TUTORS
Dean Francis | Dean is a recent AFTRS directing graduate.
Dean has directed many short films and a short feature. His films include
Crazy Richard, Afterlife, Too Little Justice,
Bo’s Grammar and most recently Vermin. His short
films Boy’s Grammar and Transgression are currently
featuring at festivals in New York and San Francisco. Dean’s film
Vermin recently premiered at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International
Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
Michael Chrisoulakis | Michael's short suspense film, Interchange
has screened at many festivals worldwide and received awards including;
Short Film Winner at both the Telluride Indie Fest and Key West Indie Fest,
Best Film at the Eyescream Halloween Film Festival, Best Thriller at the
International Festival of Cinema and Technology. Michael also received the
Great Expectations award at the Sour Grapes Film Festival. Michael is currently
the coordinator of Metro Screen's Members Production Group and the monthly
Filmmaker's Studio.

PITCHING SESSION
Metro Screen Network
Second last chance this year to pitch for $15,000 worth of subsidy
for your next project.
Whether it’s a film, documentary, TV show or new media project this
is you chance.
Warm up your powers of persuasion and pitch for production
support OR be an audience member and decide who wins.
WHAT | Metro Screen members have the opportunity
to access filmmaking equipment or facilities through the $15,000
MPG annual subsidy fund.
All you need to do is pitch your filmmaking project to the group and persuade
them to support your vision! Pitchers must have attended
at least one MPG meeting and be a current financial Metro Screen member.
HOW | Potential pitchers must submit
pitching documents by Friday 30th March at 5pm. The sessions are
limited to four pitchers.
CRITERIA | Pitches will be assessed on the
quality of the story and feasibility of the project. We’ll
also have a panel on hand to give feedback and offer advice to those pitching.
AUDIENCE | Will also be given an opportunity
to ask questions of the pitchers, meet the industry guest and
vote on how much each pitch will receive through a secret ballot.
If you are thinking of pitching in the coming year, this is a great chance
to witness the process first hand and get an idea of what’s
required.
As always at Metro Screen Network meetings, there will be opportunities
to network and meet other members or announce calls for crew and cast for
your next production.

Samantha Lang International Filmmaker
The Well, The Moneky’s Mask, L’idole
At The Filmmakers’ Studio Thursday 7 June, 7pm. At Metro Screen, Sydney
This is an opportunity to find out about Samantha Lang’s career in
the film industry, gain tips, hear the do’s and don’ts and find
out what’s next for our esteemed guest.
SAMANTHA LANG
While studying a BA in Visual Communication Samantha Lang won a scholarship
to undertake film studies in Germany and Prague. She then went on to graduate
from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School with a BA in Directing.
Her short films include Out, God’s Bones, Malady
and Audacious (which won the Dendy Award for Short Fiction in 1995).
Her television credits include an episode of the Twisted Tales
series, Third Party.
Her film The Well, was the only Australian feature directed by
a woman and the only feature film to be chosen for competition at Cannes,
in 1997. It also received 11 AFI award nominations. Her next feature, The
Monkey’s Mask won the Audience prize at the St Tropez Film Festival.
She followed this up with L’idole starring Leelee Sobieski
and James Hong, which screened in Edinburgh Film Festival 2002, World of
Women Cinema, Sydney 2002, Toronto Film Festival, 2002, Locarno Film Festival,
France 2002, Montreal Film Festival, 2002, Bordeau Womens Film Festival,
2002 and San Tropez Antipodean Film Festival, 2002
FILMMAKERS’ STUDIO
The Filmmakers’ Studio brings well known industry professionals to
an intimate environment where they share experiences, screen clips from
their work and take questions.
YOUR HOST FOR THE EVENING is the accomplished
interviewer Andrew Urban. Andrew brings over 35 years experience as a journalist,
feature writer and news reporter for The Australian, The Bulletin, Cinema

ONE SIX SIX PRODUCTIONS
TV Facilities Coordinator position
We are looking for a bright and outgoing person to fill a newly created
full time role of Facilities Coordinator at One Six Six Productions, a
television commercial Production Company based in Woolloomooloo, Sydney.
The Facilities Coordinator will work autonomously to quote, schedule and
manage in-house editing projects and should have an excellent knowledge
of both production and post production process. One Six Six owns a broadcast
quality Final Cut edit suite and creates TVC’s, hype reels, compiles,
corporates and videos for the advertising agency and their clients. You
will be the liaison between internal departments and all aspects of post
production and it will be your responsibility to ensure that clients’
requirements are qualified and that they can be met by the facilities
technical resources.
You must be flexible and a problem solver. You’ll need to be able
to prioritise workflow, flag problems early, work to deadlines whilst
under pressure and have strong personnel management skills. The position
would ideally suit a recent graduate or someone with prior experience
in Post Production as you will need to be able to clearly understand the
clients’ requirements.
REQUIREMENTS
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate
with both technical and nontechnical personnel, remaining calm and professional
under pressure.
• Strong time/project management skills with an ability to juggle
several projects simultaneously.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
• Final Cut Pro experience is not essential, but ideal.
• Proficient on both Mac and PC systems.

INDIGENOUS HEALING WITH MULTICULTURAL MOVEMENTS
Producer / Crew Search
The Director REALITY AV seeks ‘competent’ people to assist
in future production for national and global audience. The intention,
as proven and filmed over ten years, is to put together an update Healthcare
Program for 1⁄2 hour TV time slots. The first 5 X 1⁄2 hour
series will capture local indigenous healing systems with our own indigenous
first people of Australia. This series will then extend to most other

2007 SYNAPSE ART AND SCIENCE RESIDENCIES
Call for Proposals from Australian Media Artists
The residencies are available to Australian artists with experience in media
arts practice and an interest in science. Artists from all technologically
mediated disciplines are welcome to apply.
Residencies can be undertaken at either an Australian or overseas science
organisation for a period of 12 or 16 weeks, depending on the location.
ANAT will provide an artist's fee, accommodation, a living away allowance
and return travel to the destination of the residency if required. It is
anticipated the host organisation will provide access to personnel, equipment,
space and resources, as well as contributing towards materials and/or the
cost of mounting an exhibition at the conclusion of the residency.
The deadline for applications is 5pm, Friday, 29th
June 2007

14th WORLD OF WOMEN FILM FESTIVAL 2007
WOW is Back
“Seeing the world through the eyes of women…”
presented by WIFT NSW
The World of Women (WOW) Film Festival is a short film festival that offers
emerging and established women filmmakers the opportunity to screen short
works and promotes women directors, producers, writers, editors and cinematographers
in the Australian film industry and in Oceania.
In 2007 the 14th WOW Film Festival will be held in Sydney at its traditional
venue, the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington from Thursday 25th to Friday 26th
October. The WOW Festival programs will then travel as the WOW Tour to over
18 national, regional and remote locations in Australia. Industry programs
will feature with the film screenings.
This year the WOW Short Film Competition invites entries which are up to
55 minutes long and from any genre. iDRINX award and prize for the best
viral, up to 3 minutes long, which features the iDRINX bottled Sangria –
designed for viewing on the internet is a new category. Industry professionals
judge the entries and awards will be presented.
Application forms for entry to the WOW Short Film Competition are available
from the WIFT NSW website, www.wift.org. Entries must be submitted by 16th
August 2007. Women filmmakers, particularly from indigenous and from other
under-represented groups in Australia and Oceania are encouraged to enter.

happens both on and off the road in the world‚s most famous cycling
event!
Accompanying the main feature will be a vintage educational film about bicycle
safety.

Crude Awakening: the Oil Crash Movie @ 6.30pm
This fascinating film is guaranteed to make you think. Seriously. Learn
about how scarily dependant we are on this dwindling resource in this award-winning
documentary on the oil industry, and the incredible impact it has on the
global economy, industry and the environment.

15/15 FESTIVAL SCREENING
On Tonight
The 15/15 Film Festival is a multi-location event based in Australia and
is coordinated to run simultaneously across the world. It is held annually
in March in 27 national and international locations.
The festival provides an excellent creative opportunity for filmmakers to
make a short film of 15 minutes or less, in under 15 hours.
The international premiere of the 15/15 Film Festival will be held in Sydney
on Thursday 31st of May 2007 at the Chauvel Cinema. The Sydney session is
a collection of films made locally, interstate and internationally and includes
several films nominated for awards.

ST KILDA FILM FESTIVAL NATIONAL TOUR

The Festival will play from June 5 – 10 at the Astor Cinema in St
Kilda, Melbourne where 100 of Australia's best short films will be on show.
The program also includes soundKILDA, a fantastic opportunity to
see a selection of Australia's best music videos in full cinematic glory
on the big screen.
THE TOUR
Three sessions will play in every capital city (except Canberra) including
two sessions of the "Best of the Best" (a selection of the best
short films from the St Kilda festival) and one session of SoundKILDA. Canberra
