24 HOUR FILMMAKING FESTIVAL
The Shoot Out
Registration is now open for the 9th annual Shoot Out.
Films need to be shot in Newcastle between 9pm Friday 13 and 9pm Saturday
14 July. Entry is open to anyone with a video camera, a few friends and
a bright idea for a film! First prize is worth a whopping $18,000 including
$4,000 CASH-O-LA Winners are announced at a special screening on Sunday
15 July.
2006 entrant, Matt Woodham only found out about The Shoot Out a week before
the event. His film ‘The Percusionist’, featuring a bands
less than veiled attempts to dispose of an untalented tambourine player
with delusions of grandeur, went on to win ‘Best Film’. This
goes to prove, it’s not always about months of intense planning.
It can start with a good idea and just finding a way to make it work on
screen.
“The Shoot Out is not about how much money is spent on making a
film or who has access to the best editing facilities,” says Kristi
Street, founder and Director of The Shoot Out 24 Hour Filmmaking Festival.
“The incredibly high standard of films that we see in the Top Ten
each year is purely a result of being focused, organised and pushing creativity
and physical stamina to the limit!”.
So get together with your friends, your family or that special someone
you’re trying to chat up and be in Newcastle on Friday July 13.
You have 24 hours to make 7 minutes count.

POPCORN TAXI
Crocodile Dreaming + Thursday’s Fictions
Preview Screening of Two Extraordinary Australian Short Films + Q&A
with the filmmakers.
7.00pm, Wed 27 Jun 2007, Greater Union Bondi Junction,
Price: $12/$10 conc
Tickets available via Popcorn Taxi Website | www.popcorntaxi.com.au
Popcorn Taxi is very proud to present two extraordinary Australian 35mm
short films, both mythical and fantastical in their own ways, Darlene
Johnson’s CROCODILE DREAMING, and Richard Allen’s THURSDAY’S
FICTIONS.
CROCODILE DREAMING is a project developed by writer/director DARLENE JOHNSON
and the legendary Australian actor, DAVID GULPILIL. It is seen as a modern
day, supernatural myth about two estranged brothers who are brought together
through the spirit of their mother. It is a story about loss, love, brotherhood
and freedom and the search for identity. As DARLENE observes, “Crocodile
Dreaming is important to me because of the journey it has allowed me to
make, a journey that is not yet over, nor probably ever will be –
a spiritual journey to connect with the origins of what I am, and why
I am.”
The journey in THURSDAY’S FICTIONS equally explores the notion of
identity through the cinematic experience of music, dance and surreal
fantasy. A woman named Thursday, realises she is running out of time in
a world in which people live only for the length of a day. She discovers
she is going to be reincarnated as Tuesday and in her attempt to cheat
the cycle of reincarnation, she unleashes a terrible beauty that leaves
the other ‘days of the week’ in turmoil. According to director
and co-writer RICHARD JAMES ALLEN, the film is highly imaginative and
richly textured in its ability to allow different art forms to blend together
in concert towards an immersive sensory whole. The film was awarded the
Gold Medal Award Citation, Director’s Choice for Artistic Excellence
in a Feature Film, at Park City Film Music Festival.
Joining us on-stage after the screenings will be DARLENE JOHNSON, RICHARD
ALLEN and Producer KAREN PEARLMAN for an audience Q&A and to discuss
their own ‘journeys’ in making these films.
