Whether you want to write, direct, produce, shoot, record sound or edit,
this course gives you hands on experience with broadcast quality equipment
that will enable you to graduate and step into a professional role of your
choosing.
PAST GRADUATES
Graduates have gone on to start their own successful production
companies, be awarded at local and international film festivals,
work professionally on TV series, short films

Steve Crombie has now signed with RGM Associates
who represent: John Polson, Cate Blanchett and Anthony La Paglia. Steve
will have a segment on the Lonely Planet BlueList series screening
on SBS in June and has secured a book deal with Pan Macmillan.

places on the Directing strand of a Bachelor in Media Studies at the Western
Australian Screen Academy [WASA].

DIGITAL MICRO MOVIE
July 17
This hands-on introductory workshop gives you the opportunity to produce
a short movie in 15 hours from initial idea to final film. In groups, you
will script and storyboard your ideas, shoot using our digital cameras,
then edit your work in our Final Cut Pro edit suites. All participants will
rotate through key crew roles while learning basic screen language, lighting
and sound techniques.

FINAL CUT PRO FUNDAMENTALS
[Beginner]
Metro Screen is pleased to announce our partnership with Apple Australia
and new status as an Apple Authorised Training Centre. This means that students
enrolling in our Final Cut Pro 5 editing courses may now receive both Apple
and VETAB accreditation – a tremendously valuable qualification.
Taught by an Apple Certified trainer and following Apple’s ‘Pro’
training syllabus, this course is designed for beginners looking to edit
professional quality video using Final Cut Pro 5. It introduces participants
to the primary features of Final Cut Pro in an interactive teaching environment.
Learn to perform basic editing functions while familiarising yourself with
the user interface. Topics include basic setup, adjusting and customising
preferences and settings, capturing video and audio, various editing and

MULTICULTURAL MENTORSHIP SCHEME
Applications Now Open to Transform your Story into
a Short Film
The Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS] is open to people of diverse cultural
and non-English speaking backgrounds that have a story to tell.
Supported by the NSW Film and Television Office four storytellers from NSW
will be offered equipment, facilities hire, stock, post production facilities,
and a $2,000 budget. In addition, each filmmaker will be mentored by an
industry professional.
Applicants simply need a story or idea and the vision and commitment to
make it into a five minute film.
PREVIOUS FILMS HAVE EXPLORED TOPICS INCLUDING:
• cultural conflict and drama of stereotypes
• issues surrounding sexual attraction between white people and people
of colour
• beliefs and notions of ‘truth’, history and memory
• ideas around the term ‘people of middle eastern appearance’
• ideas around the topic of ‘Australian Values’
Many award-winning shorts have been produced through this scheme and applicants
have gone on to produce more award winning work. Flordeliz Bonifacio has
won two international awards for her second short film Deluge made with
a NSW Film and Television Office [NSW FTO], Young Filmmakers Fund [YFF].
With her first film Orange Season made through the Multicultural Mentorship
Scheme [MMS].
“My mentor was writer/director Donald Crombie, whose wealth of knowledge
and experience I was able to draw upon. Had I not had the chance to explore
my style of storytelling through the MMS, I would not have had the level
of understanding, hindsight and preparation as a writer-director that was
so important to the success of my second film, Deluge.” Says Flordeliz
Bonifacio.
Applicants are selected on their idea, relevant skills and how the process
will impact their careers. People with experience in other artforms and
practices are also encouraged to apply.

YOUTH FILMMAKING WORKSHOP

Metro Screen’s youth unit Channel Free is running its ever popular
School Holiday workshop next school holidays July 4 – 6.
Are you ready to make a film in three days?
"Lights, Camera, Action"?
This intensive three day video making course is open to all levels of experience
and will develop your overall skills in producing quality video
projects. The experience gained and skills learned on this course
can be used for film projects, television projects and digital media screen
productions. And it’s fun!

Young people with little or no prior video production experience are encouraged
to enrol.

TUTORS
Dean Francis | Dean is a recent AFTRS directing graduate.
Dean has directed many short films and a short feature. His films include
Crazy Richard, Afterlife, Too Little Justice,
Bo’s Grammar and most recently Vermin. His short
films Boy’s Grammar and Transgression are currently
featuring at festivals in New York and San Francisco. Dean’s film
Vermin recently premiered at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International
Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
Michael Chrisoulakis | Michael's short suspense film, Interchange
has screened at many festivals worldwide and received awards including;
Short Film Winner at both the Telluride Indie Fest and Key West Indie Fest,
Best Film at the Eyescream Halloween Film Festival, Best Thriller at the
International Festival of Cinema and Technology. Michael also received the
Great Expectations award at the Sour Grapes Film Festival. Michael is currently
the coordinator of Metro Screen's Members Production Group and the monthly
Filmmaker's Studio.

For Metro Screen’s Certificate IV in Screen
Metro Screen invites you to the Certificate IV in Screen graduation screening
and reminds you that there are only a few places left in our next course.
Free and open to the public | July 12 | at

Metro Screen will showcase these new Australian works by the next generation
of filmmakers. The course allowed its soon to be graduates the opportunity
to produce films while gaining a complete education in short film, television
production and documentary making as well as screenwriting, producing,
directing, camera, lighting, sound and editing.
Films screening include psychological dramas and documentaries on traditional
Tongan values in Sydney culture and a factory who forces its workers to
come to work every day to do nothing rather than pay out their entitlements
after its closure.
At the screening audience members will be given the opportunity to meet
these students, their tutors and Metro Screen staff.
To be a part of the next Certificate IV in Screen and be given the opportunities
our current students have had simply enroll now. There are a limited number
of places still available in this highly regarded industry standard course.

AUSTRALIAN WOMAN TO BREAK WORLD RECORD

Gabrielle Simpson, 64 year old Sydney grandmother, is to become the oldest
woman to race round the world: Gabrielle has been chosen to the team of
Clipper 07/08: The Round the World Yacht Race: the world’s longest
ocean race. When she returns she will be the oldest woman to race round
world qualifying for the Guinness Book of Records
Her jubilant arrival in Liverpool, UK in summer 2008 will mark the end
of an epic challenge: taking on the raw forces of nature and becoming
one of the world’s sailing pioneers. She will be the Oldest Female
Global Yacht Racer.
Gabrielle needs the support of sponsors and the people of Australia for
her Crew place in the race: approx. $120,000 for 12 months, including
2 months training. All monies go to the organisers, with expenses, and

DOCUMENTARY FILM
Crew Call
UTS Arts Media Students are looking for a Cinematogrpaher/Camerraperson
for their documentary Supermyth. The film explores the myths of who resides
and what occurs within the walls of Goulburn Supermax prison. They will
interview Goulburn residents on how the township is affected by the presence
of the Supermax. UTS are seeking a highly committed individual who is
interested in playing a major creative role in our film. The individual
should be engaged with the themes of Supermyth and willing to suggest
relevant visually engaging paths.
Shooting to occur in both Goulburn and Sydney, must be available from
14th – 28th July (14th – 21st in Goulburn). Other shooting
dates, outside of the main period, will also be arranged however all shoots
will be concluded by early September.
Payment will be deferred until completion of shoot and will be negotiated
according to experience and creative skills on offer. Accommodation and
a small food allowance, outside of set meals, will be provided.

An annual Film and Documentary Festival to celebrate excellence for first
time producers, directors, writers, cinematographers, actors, technicians
and documentary makers from the Asian diaspora, this year’s festival

HUMAN RIGHTS ARTS & FILM FESTIVAL
Call for Entries
The inaugural Human Rights Arts and Film Festival (HRAFF) is calling for
film submissions. The festival will take place at RMIT Capitol Theatre
and 45 Downstairs in Melbourne from 26 November – 2 December 2007.
The festival will run over four days and they are looking for films that
explore issues to do with any type of human rights.
HRAFF was inspired by successful human right film festivals held overseas
and is the first of its kind in Australia. More than a film festival,
HRAFF will also incorporate art, music, performance, speakers, and information
hubs so people can get more information about the human rights issues
raised by the films and art.
The festival program will be announced in August.

SYDNEY PEACE FESTIVAL
Calls for Entries
The 2nd Sydney Peace Festival is a festival of short films being held
in Sydney on Thurs 2 August 2007. Organised by the Hiroshima Day Committee,
this is an annual event held in conjunction with the commemoration of
Hiroshima Day.
The topic of the Festival is "Peace" in whatever way you wish
to interpret it and the festival is accepting submissions of short films
of all genres, up to 20 minutes in length. To submit your film download

WORLD OF WOMEN WOW FILM FESTIVAL

The 14th World of Women (WOW) Film Festival is a short film festival that
offers emerging and established women filmmakers the opportunity to screen
short works and promotes women directors, producers, writers, editors
and cinematographers in the Australian film industry and in Oceania.
The festival is hosted by Women in Film and Television NSW which is committed
to improving the status of women, both on and off the screen, by supporting
and advancing women working in the film, television and related screen
industries. It is a membership based non-profit organisation.

MOBILE MEDIA 2007
Conference
Mobile media is being heralded as a new site for consumption, democratic
expression, individualism, citizenship, and creativity. This international
conference aims to comprehensively analyse and debate mobile media –
exploring its emerging structures, features, practices, value chains,
producers and audiences, delving into its social, cultural, aesthetic
and commercial implications, and debating its futures.
Register and submit papers for presentation at the website. Mobile Media
2007 is being held at the University of Sydney 2 – 4 July.

SPAA CONFERENCE
Animation Pilot Submissions
As part of this year's SPAA Conference, kid's pay television channel Nickelodeon
Australia is offering up to $20,000 towards the production of an animation
pilot. The winner of the funding will be announced at the Conference being
held at the Sheraton Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast.
Nickelodeon is looking for ideas that will appeal to both boys and girls
between the ages of 7 and 13 years old. All registered delegates at the
Conference are eligible to apply. Guidelines and an application form are

The SPAA Conference attracts up to 650 industry representatives and key
decision makers including producers, directors, distributors, financiers,
exhibitors, television network heads, commissioning editors, lawyers and
accountants. Of these there is a sizable international contingent from
leading media organisations around the world.
SPAA is the industry association for the independent film and television
industry, providing leadership and direction on all debates concerning
the economics, creative and technological future of the screen production
industries in Australia. It strives to create the business conditions
for the industry to compete strongly in both local and overseas markets.

MESSAGE STICKS INDIGENOUS FILM FESTIVAL
Touring Festival
The Australian Film Commission’s (AFC) Black Screen will tour the
2007 Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival in conjunction with and the
Gab Titui Cultural Centre, the Saibai Island Council and Boigu Island
Council in June and July.
Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival is curated by Indigenous filmmakers
Rachel Perkins and Darren Dale and was shown at the Sydney Opera House
in 2006 and 2007 to capacity crowds.
All Message Sticks screenings in the Torres Straits
are free and the dates and times are:
