PROJECTS

MULTICULTURAL MENTORSHIP SCHEME
Applications Now Open to Transform your Story into a Short Film

The Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS] is open to people of diverse cultural and non-English speaking backgrounds that have a story to tell.

Supported by the NSW Film and Television Office four storytellers from NSW will be offered equipment, facilities hire, stock, post production facilities, and a $2,000 budget. In addition, each filmmaker will be mentored by an industry professional.

Applicants simply need a story or idea and the vision and commitment to make it into a five minute film.

PREVIOUS FILMS HAVE EXPLORED TOPICS INCLUDING:
• cultural conflict and drama of stereotypes
• issues surrounding sexual attraction between white people and people of colour
• beliefs and notions of ‘truth’, history and memory
• ideas around the term ‘people of middle eastern appearance’
• ideas around the topic of ‘Australian Values’

Many award-winning shorts have been produced through this scheme and applicants have gone on to produce more award winning work. Flordeliz Bonifacio has won two international awards for her second short film Deluge made with a NSW Film and Television Office [NSW FTO], Young Filmmakers Fund [YFF]. With her first film Orange Season made through the Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS].

“My mentor was writer/director Donald Crombie, whose wealth of knowledge and experience I was able to draw upon. Had I not had the chance to explore my style of storytelling through the MMS, I would not have had the level of understanding, hindsight and preparation as a writer-director that was so important to the success of my second film, Deluge.” Says Flordeliz Bonifacio.

Applicants are selected on their idea, relevant skills and how the process will impact their careers. People with experience in other artforms and practices are also encouraged to apply.

For an application kit and details on how to apply for the 2007 Multicultural Mentor Scheme please contact Metro Screen’s Project Manager, David Opitz on 02 9361 5318 or d.opitz@metroscreen.org.au

APPLICATION DEADLINE is Friday 3rd August 2007.

POPCORN TAXI
Temple of Dreams + Q&A

Popcorn Taxi is proud to present the Melbourne premier screening of the fantastic new Australian feature documentary TEMPLE OF DREAMS, followed by a discussion and Audience Q&A session with AFI Award Winning Documentary Filmmaker Tom Zubrycki.

A highlight of The Sydney Film Festival, Temple Of Dreams is a documentary told from the inside, revealing Muslim Australians in a way that dispels stereotypes of a vilified and victimised minority.

The story centres around Fadi Rahman, a new breed of Australian Muslim leaders, who is young, charismatic and politically ambitious. He runs a youth centre/gymnasium in what was once a Masonic Temple. The youth centre struggles in the face of council planning regulations and funding shortfalls and Fadi sets out to solve all their problems with the help of three determined but often argumentative young women – Alyah, Amna and Zouhour.

First up to raise funds Fadi flies out former rap star, turned born-again Muslim, Napoleon and a youth conference to discuss the problems young Muslims face in Australia. These events are much bigger than anything they’ve attempted before, and the stress is takes it’s toll. Meanwhile the Council deadline is looming, with the threat of closure imminent. Will the Centre survive?

After the screening one of Australia's leading documentary filmmakers Tom Zubrycki (Molly and Mobarak, The Diplomat, Billal), and three of the film's documentary subjects Fadi, Amna & Zouhour, join Paul Harris on-stage to discuss his process making the film.
