PROJECTS

MULTICULTURAL MENTORSHIP SCHEME
Applications Now Open to Transform your Story into a Short Film

The Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS] is open to people of diverse cultural and non-English speaking backgrounds that have a story to tell.

Supported by the NSW Film and Television Office four storytellers from NSW will be offered equipment, facilities hire, stock, post production facilities, and a $2,000 budget. In addition, each filmmaker will be mentored by an industry professional.

Applicants simply need a story or idea and the vision and commitment to make it into a five minute film.

PREVIOUS FILMS HAVE EXPLORED TOPICS INCLUDING:
• cultural conflict and drama of stereotypes
• issues surrounding sexual attraction between white people and people of colour
• beliefs and notions of ‘truth’, history and memory
• ideas around the term ‘people of middle eastern appearance’
• ideas around the topic of ‘Australian Values’

Many award-winning shorts have been produced through this scheme and applicants have gone on to produce more award winning work. Flordeliz Bonifacio has won two international awards for her second short film Deluge made with a NSW Film and Television Office [NSW FTO], Young Filmmakers Fund [YFF]. With her first film Orange Season made through the Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS].

“My mentor was writer/director Donald Crombie, whose wealth of knowledge and experience I was able to draw upon. Had I not had the chance to explore my style of storytelling through the MMS, I would not have had the level of understanding, hindsight and preparation as a writer-director that was so important to the success of my second film, Deluge.” Says Flordeliz Bonifacio.

Applicants are selected on their idea, relevant skills and how the process will impact their careers. People with experience in other artforms and practices are also encouraged to apply.

For an application kit and details on how to apply for the 2007 Multicultural Mentor Scheme please contact Metro Screen’s Project Manager, David Opitz on 02 9361 5318 or d.opitz@metroscreen.org.au

APPLICATION DEADLINE is Friday 3rd August 2007.

OPPORTUNITIES

GRACE
Extras Required

Grace is a short film about coming to accept your ancestry as a point of pride rather than shame, and missed opportunities with grandparents as it's often too late by the time we are interested in getting to know them as people.

The film will be shot in high definition and Super 8mm.

Unfortunately, due to this being a self-funded film, actors and extras will not get paid. They will, however, be well fed and watered by a wonderful caterer, and have the opportunity to appear in a quality production that will be entered in numerous international film festivals. A reference will also be written for extras.

Extras will be required for either a funeral scene the evening of Saturday 11th August in Mona Vale, or a pub scene the afternoon/evening of Sunday 12th August in Newtown.

There are a few male feature extra roles available. If you are between the age of 18 and 25 please send through a head shot to be considered for one of these parts.

Please email Dana-Lee Mierowsky (Extra’s Co-ordinator) at getinvolvedintheatre@hotmail.com as soon as possible for further details about the shoot. When you send the email please express which day you would be interested in.

MANUFACTURING DISSENT
Popcorn Taxi

Popcorn Taxi Sydney presents
Manufacturing Dissent + Q&A with Filmmaker Debbie Melnyck

Manufacturing Dissent is a topical documentary that turns the camera back on Michael Moore.

Popcorn Taxi in association with Ozdox present the first Sydney screening of "Manufacturing Dissent", a topical feature length documentary that turns the camera back on filmmaker Michael Moore.

Shot during the release of Moore's explosive film “Fahrenheit 911”, the subsequent Slacker Uprising Tour and the 2004 US election, filmmakers Debbie Melnyck and Rick Caine set out to make a film about their documentary hero Michael Moore. They **chase Moore for that ever-elusive interview, and at one point even have their camera pushed to the ground, and are asked to leave by Moore's security.* *As the film progresses, **facts arise questioning Moore's credibility as a journalist, his film-making techniques, and his personal character.

Reminiscent of Michael Moore’s own "Roger and Me", the documentary seeks to separate the fact, fiction and legend that surrounds Moore. Ultimately it offers a balanced portrait and an effective starting point for further discussion of Moore's contentious work as a political filmmaker, and what constitutes the definition of a documentary. The film features interviews with Noam Chomsky, John Pierson, Harlan Jacobson, Dave Marsh, Ralph Nader, Albert Maysles and Errol Morris.

After the screening the film's director Debbie Melnyck joins us on-stage to talk about the making of the film. The Manufacturing Dissent trailer can be viewed at http://www.revelationfilmfest.org/files/MD_trailer.mov

Popcorn Taxi would like to thank DV1 for their generous support in making this program possible.

Last weekend an ecstatic group of people attended a workshop on Directing with Cate Shortland at Metro Screen.

The workshop reminded me of what I love about film making.” Cate Shortland.

Cate's focus with the course was on finding the truth in the story you are telling. The course included script breakdown and analysis, casting, rehearsals, working with actors on set (both TV & film), the dynamic between director and cast/crew, sound & music (and much more).

On the Sunday, six actors worked with the students giving them hands on experience and helpful insights into the actors' responses to different directing styles. Cate demonstrated various techniques with the actors and then students volunteered to direct in front of the class, using Cate's techniques and some of their own. The result was fascinating to watch, and Cate encouraged discussion on what worked, why the directors (and actors) had made certain choices and how they could all push themselves further to gain a deeper truth from the script.

Having the opportunity to be directed by Cate was a really unique and exciting experience. Cate is truly an actor’s director. Her tools for working with the actors in the course were practical and clear as she provided us with a great opportunity to play and explore on the floor. Cate’s joy for the work is contagious and as an actor, it was an invaluable session to be a part of.” – Emma Wood, participating actor
