MULTICULTURAL MENTORSHIP SCHEME
Applications Now Open to Transform your Story into
a Short Film
The Multicultural Mentorship Scheme [MMS] is open to people of diverse cultural
and non-English speaking backgrounds that have a story to tell.
Supported by the NSW Film and Television Office four storytellers from NSW
will be offered equipment, facilities hire, stock, post production facilities,
and a $2,000 budget. In addition, each filmmaker will be mentored by an
industry professional.
Applicants simply need a story or idea and the vision and commitment to
make it into a five minute film.
PREVIOUS FILMS HAVE EXPLORED TOPICS INCLUDING:
• cultural conflict and drama of stereotypes
• issues surrounding sexual attraction between white people and people
of colour
• beliefs and notions of ‘truth’, history and memory
• ideas around the term ‘people of middle eastern appearance’
• ideas around the topic of ‘Australian Values’
Many award-winning shorts have been produced through this scheme and applicants
have gone on to produce more award winning work. Flordeliz Bonifacio has
won two international awards for her second short film Deluge made with
a NSW Film and Television Office [NSW FTO], Young Filmmakers Fund [YFF].
With her first film Orange Season made through the Multicultural Mentorship
Scheme [MMS].
“My mentor was writer/director Donald Crombie, whose wealth of knowledge
and experience I was able to draw upon. Had I not had the chance to explore
my style of storytelling through the MMS, I would not have had the level
of understanding, hindsight and preparation as a writer-director that was
so important to the success of my second film, Deluge.” Says Flordeliz
Bonifacio.
Applicants are selected on their idea, relevant skills and how the process
will impact their careers. People with experience in other artforms and
practices are also encouraged to apply.
For an application kit and details on how to apply for the 2007 Multicultural
Mentor Scheme please contact Metro Screen’s Project Manager, David
Opitz on 02 9361 5318 or d.opitz@metroscreen.org.au

REEL PARADISE
Popcorn Taxi
Popcorn Taxi presents
Reel Paradise + Q&A with Indie Film Guru John Pierson
For the first time in Australia, Popcorn Taxi presents an exclusive screening
of REEL PARADISE, a feature length documentary produced by Kevin Smith,
and directed by Steven James (Hoop Dreams), that documents the journey of
the "guru of independent film" John Pierson, when he packs up
his family and relocates to a remote island of Fiji, to resurrect an old
run down movie theatre and screen films free to the locals for a year. As
the film unfolds, we see the differing ways in which each of the Pierson
family deals with living in this very different culture. They don't sugar-coat
their feelings towards each other or their experience in Fiji, but underneath
it all, there is no mistaking their affection for both.
John Pierson is a noted indie film maverick, who was instrumental in launching
the careers of directors that include Spike Lee, Rickard Linklater, Michael
Moore, Errol Morris and Kevin Smith. He is also the author of the widely
celebrated book, SPIKE, MIKE, SLACKERS DYKES.
If you've ever entertained the idea of chucking it all in, moving to a tropical
island and running an old picture theatre, then this film is your calling
card! Join us for what may be your only chance to see REEL PARADISE, followed
by a conversation and Q (via phone hook-up) with the films Executive Producer
and main subject, John Pierson.

SPAAMART
Call For Applications
Australasia's feature film market, SPAAmart, has announced that applications
for this year's event, which will take place during the annual SPAA Conference
in November, is now open.
SPAAmart is calling for unique and distinct projects that are at an advanced
stage of development and ready to present to the market for financing, sales
and distribution.
SPAAmart was launched in 2003 with the aim of bringing the best Australasian
feature projects to the attention of local and international financiers.
Films that have previously participated in SPAAmart as a launching pad include
Clubland, West, Noise, The Home Song Stories and Lucky Miles.
The calibre and range of key financing executives taking part in SPAAmart
is a testament to international interest in Australian film, and this year
will be no exception, with international representatives that all have a
keen interest in engaging with Australian film as potential financiers,
distributors and sales agents.
Says SPAA Executive Director Geoff Brown, "In our new financing landscape
in Australia, it is more important than ever to attract major players to
quality, market-ready Australian projects. SPAAmart is a key opportunity
for filmmakers to fast track their projects."

PART OBJECTS
Ian Andrews
Ian Andrews is better known for his video, sound and new media art that
has been exhibited internationally. This exhibition, however, gathers together
some of his “found” object collage pieces that he has been working
on, in the background, for the last ten years.
Andrews’ collages utilise both recycled materials (wood, Perspex,
stainless steel), and what could more properly be described as “found
objects” (cheap mass produced sculptures, obsolete electronic equipment
parts, army surplus optical equipment, movie film, meters, plastic figures,
doll parts, etc.). These found objects carry with them marks of previous
system, traces of previous use, which when combined produce meanings within
a “second order” signifying system. However the meanings produced
are not always intentional, or obvious, and the distinction between recycled
material and found object is not always clear cut. Found objects (or parts
of) blur into their materiality and the “raw” materials often
carry a supplementary objecthood. This tension between the two systems is
what Andrews investigates as he works like a bricoleur, an amateur handyman
or tinkerer, with what ever is at hand. Aesthetic concerns are pushed to
the background and pieces are allowed to “come into being” through
aesthetically indifferent processes.
