STRUCTURE YOUR SCREENPLAY TO SELL
September 22
Two-day workshop Sep 22 & 29
You’re a screenwriter but nobody wants to make your films.
You don’t realise it but there is one reason only: the Draft
One Trap. You go on a crusade for recognition, for people to tell you how
talented you are and how successful you will be. To appease your conscience,
you will make minor scene level tweaks. You will call it draft two, three,
thirteen. The reality is that it is still draft one.
Story consultant and producer Karel Segers teaches you how to turn your
screenplay or movie idea into a story that sells. He talks
passionately about structure, process, selling and some powerful ‘three-act-truths’
during this intensive two-day course Sep 22 & 29.
COURSE DETAIL | Successful feature screenwriters
don’t cherish that first draft. They won’t show it, let alone
shop it around except for advice on how to move to the next draft. They
listen to the painful feedback from industry professionals and follow a
process on the way to a wonderful, radically different Draft Two. This course
guarantees you will not unknowingly fall into that Draft One Trap again
by helping you build a process for the Real Draft Two.
DAY ONE | Learn how to assess your work with
the eyes of a professional, using the much touted but rarely understood
‘three act structure’ on every level of the screenplay.
DAY TWO | Focus on the rewriting process and
the preparation of a strong submission document for producers and funding
agencies.
TUTOR | Karel Segers, a Licentiate of Germanic
Philology (University of Louvain, Belgium) was the Head of Production and
Programming at the Digital Broadcasting Company in London (Sky, UK), before
which he was a buyer and on-screen TV host for Europe’s Canal Plus.
He served as a movie show host for MTV Europe, a producer for market leader
Radio 2 Belgium and a consultant to the Flanders International Film Festival.
Karel has produced two short dramas and co-produced a documentary and a
feature film. He is in development with a feature film and in production
with a short 3D CGI animation. Over the past few years Karel has acted as
a story analyst, consulting to writers, directors and producers on films
in development as well as post-production. His views are published in The
Story Dept. (story.ozzywood.com) as well as 'Karel's Feedback Forum' on
the AWG web site. Both of the nominees for the AWG Monte Miller Award 2007
are Karel's clients.

and it’s an exciting field to plunge into for our 15 newly skilled
documentarians.

Flickerfest is Australia’s only ®Academy Award
accredited Short Film festival, and its largest short film competition.
Flickerfest will screen for 10 days under the summer skies at Bondi Beach
in January 2008, before heading off around Australia on a 16 venue national
tour. The Festival boasts three competitive programs – International,
Australian and Documentary as well as a number of special programs and
forums out of competition.
In 2008 Flickerfest will continue to award a series of prizes that recognize
outstanding achievement in short film making. Included in our prestigious
awards this year for the first time will be the ’SAE Award for Best
Use of Digital Technology in a Short Film’, joining a host of other
illustrious prizes including ’The Coopers Award for Best Short Film’
and ’The Yoram Gross Award for Best Animation’, both Academy
accredited, ’The JVC Award for Best Australian Short Film’
and the ’National Geographic award for Best Short Documentary’
– An international jury will judge these prestigious awards.
The FLICKERFEST International competition is open to any production available
for screening on 35mm. BETACAM IS ALSO ACCEPTABLE FOR THE DOCUMENTARY
AND AUSTRALIAN COMPETITION. All films must be under 30 minutes and must
have been completed within 2 years of the closing date. Films must be
in English or have English subtitles.
Due to the competitive nature of the Festival, we favour Sydney premieres
and films that have not been broadcast in Australia or made available
for internet download.
Please visit our website at www.flickerfest.com.au
to download an entry form.
Our deadline for Australian entries is September
14th 2007.
For international entries the deadline is September
21st 2007.

ELECTRIC SHORTS 2007
Call for Entry
It is not often these days that every film in a film festival, large,
small, mainstream, even fringe, is truly independent – i.e. fully
self-funded. This spirit of artists doing it for themselves is exactly
the kind of spirit that drives Electric Shorts.
Electric Shorts now in its fourth year with Melbourne Fringe, is looking
for self funded short films of any genre, up to 30 min, to screen on the
10th Oct 2007 at LOOP Meyer Place Melbourne.

IN THE BIN
Short Film Festival
As the Currumbin Festival approaches, In The Bin is preparing for its second
part of the tour with over 28 communities scheduled for October through
to December. In The Bin touring film festival operates through regional
and rural parts of Australia allowing people of all ages to experience not
only a film education program but also a festival, which showcases 16 of
Australia’s best short films.
In The Bin Short Film Festival kicks off with the Currumbin Film Festival
on the Gold Coast from the 22nd of September and will then tour throughout
regional and rural Australia.
In The Bin is the only short film festival in Australia, which provides
screening fees to filmmakers whilst the films are on tour. In The Bin also
has designed an educational program, which is aimed at offering a hands
on experience to budding filmmakers. The education program, which runs for
three days, has had an amazing response as it offers the opportunity for
young people to give something new a go. Communities, which have run the
program in the past, have been so impressed as it has opened the door to
linking and supporting these rural young people and fostered greater partnership
between young people and local organizations and their community.
