STRUCTURE YOUR SCREENPLAY TO SELL
September 22
Two-day workshop Sep 22 & 29
You’re a screenwriter but nobody wants to make your films.
You don’t realise it but there is one reason only: the Draft
One Trap. You go on a crusade for recognition, for people to tell you how
talented you are and how successful you will be. To appease your conscience,
you will make minor scene level tweaks. You will call it draft two, three,
thirteen. The reality is that it is still draft one.
Story consultant and producer Karel Segers teaches you how to turn your
screenplay or movie idea into a story that sells. He talks
passionately about structure, process, selling and some powerful ‘three-act-truths’
during this intensive two-day course Sep 22 & 29.
COURSE DETAIL | Successful feature screenwriters
don’t cherish that first draft. They won’t show it, let alone
shop it around except for advice on how to move to the next draft. They
listen to the painful feedback from industry professionals and follow a
process on the way to a wonderful, radically different Draft Two. This course
guarantees you will not unknowingly fall into that Draft One Trap again
by helping you build a process for the Real Draft Two.
DAY ONE | Learn how to assess your work with
the eyes of a professional, using the much touted but rarely understood
‘three act structure’ on every level of the screenplay.
DAY TWO | Focus on the rewriting process and
the preparation of a strong submission document for producers and funding
agencies.
TUTOR | Karel Segers, a Licentiate of Germanic
Philology (University of Louvain, Belgium) was the Head of Production and
Programming at the Digital Broadcasting Company in London (Sky, UK), before
which he was a buyer and on-screen TV host for Europe’s Canal Plus.
He served as a movie show host for MTV Europe, a producer for market leader
Radio 2 Belgium and a consultant to the Flanders International Film Festival.
Karel has produced two short dramas and co-produced a documentary and a
feature film. He is in development with a feature film and in production
with a short 3D CGI animation. Over the past few years Karel has acted as
a story analyst, consulting to writers, directors and producers on films
in development as well as post-production. His views are published in The
Story Dept. (story.ozzywood.com) as well as 'Karel's Feedback Forum' on
the AWG web site. Both of the nominees for the AWG Monte Miller Award 2007
are Karel's clients.

THE STORYMAKER
Crew Needed
The Storymaker is a dark fable about an old woman whose role it is to
imagine all the stories in her world. Unfolding over the last day in the
woman's life, this small window into her world tells of a lifetime of
imagining, where the world outside is reliant on her mind to fill a void.
Her life is run like clockwork and her imagination has a life of its own.
Imprisoned by the expectation that she must continue to create stories,
she struggles with whether or not she can still control her mind or whether
her mind controls her. A highly visual and sinister allegory of creative
freedom versus a commercial arts industry, The Storymaker examines the
role of artists and audience and whether one would exist without the other.
We are seeking experienced and passionate Production Assistant, 1st AD,
Production Designers and VFX people for the Oct round of YFF funding.
Both PA and VFX will play a key role in this project, which will offer
them immense creative freedoms that other projects may lack. Due to limited
resources, we are looking for passionate people with generosity, but vital
costs will be met. Also, general crew call for all that may be interested
in expanding their production experience.

CAMPUS OF THE LIVING DEAD
September 22nd
As part of the University of Sydney Union's VERGE arts festival Sydney
University will play host to the Australia's first ever open-source film
and zombie festival. "Open-source" refers to a style of creation
of artistic works where any part of the work is available on the internet,
and any person can contribute through on-line forums. Open-source film
making has become increasingly popular internationally, and it is thought
that the VERGE zombie film, tentatively named Campus of the Living Dead,
will be the first Australian-based open-source movie. Throughout the arts
festival there will be free workshops in zombie make-up and opportunities
to edit scripts and remix the music for the film online at www.zombiefestival.org
Then, on September 22nd, we are looking for anyone with a talent for film
to bring their cameras and come and film as we attempt to break the world
record for world's biggest zombie lurch! All footage will then be used
in a Sydney based zombie movie, and made available for anyone in the world
to use for their movies too. If you don't have a camera but would like
to be involved, head to the website, or just come along to Sydney University
at 10am on Saturday the 22nd of September and lurch your way across campus
all the way to a bbq and party and Hermanns Bar on city road, and, of
course, into Australia's film-making history books.

DREAMING MACBETH
ABC Radio Documentary
In Dreaming Macbeth, we eavesdrop on the rehearsal process for the Bell
Shakespeare Company's production of the Macbeth (directed by John Bell),
which is currently touring Australia. The play is a tale of murder and madness,
a bloody dream from which the central characters, Macbeth and his wife (Sean
O'Shea and Linda Cropper) cannot wake.
And it is the act of dreaming itself as a tool or technique for actors that
is explored in Dreaming Macbeth. The techniques of 'dreamwork for actors'
were developed by Janet Sonenberg, professor of Drama at MIT in Boston,
and Jungian analyst Robert Bosnak, both of whom contribute to the dreaming
process for this production of Macbeth, along with documentary maker Susan
Murphy, herself a 'dreamworker'. These 'imagination consultants' (as they're
billed in the production) enter the rehearsal process midway, to help the
actors incubate dreams in the characters they play in Macbeth; these dreams
in turn become part of that character's imagination or sub-conscious, affecting
the way they move, speak and even think.
Dreaming Macbeth offers listeners an unusually intimate window into the
rehearsal processes of gifted actors, as well as the thoughts and dreams
of the director, John Bell himself, as he reflects upon a process that has
been taken up and used by the Bell Shakespeare Company now through four
successive productions Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest,
and now Macbeth.
The programme will be broadcast on Radio National (AM 576) Radio Eye radio
and goes to air on Saturday August 25, at 1pm, repeating on Wednesday August
29 at 2pm, and downloadable as a podcast in mp3 form for one month following
broadcast, on the ABC website http://abc.net.au/rn
and follow the prompts to Radio Eye.

THE STORY OF THE MIRACLES AT COOKIES TABLE
Australian Premiere
Griffin Theatre Company and HotHouse Theatre present the Australian premiere
of The Story of the Miracles at Cookies Table. The winner of the 2005 Patrick
White Playwright’s Award is a powerful family saga spanning four generations
on Stradbroke Island.
A young Aboriginal man’s yearning to understand his history is at
odds with his mother’s desire to protect his future. Griffin Theatre
Company has teamed with HotHouse Theatre to present this deeply affecting
personal tale, written by one of our leading theatre artists, which has
its Australian premiere season at the SBW Stables Theatre from 10 August.
In the 1870’s a girl is born under a tree, her birth tree, chosen
to give her strength and wisdom. When the tree is cut down she follows it
into the white man’s world, working as a cook for the big house on
the island. Her tree has become a kitchen table, one she will pass down
through successive generations as a legacy - a way of carving out her family
stories. Now, generations later, a young man and his mother fight for ownership
of the table.

DECEMBER BOYS
Popcorn Taxi
Popcorn Taxi presents
December Boys + Q&A with Director Rod Hardy
Popcorn Taxi presents a preview screening of December Boys, the touching
story of four orphan teens growing up behind the closed doors of a Catholic
convent in the outback during the 1960s. Based on Michael Noonan’s
highly acclaimed novel, this coming-of-age drama marks Daniel Radcliffe’s
first major role outside the Harry Potter‚ character.
The December Boys are a close-knit band of four orphans all with the same
birth month. Radcliffe plays Maps, a lonely orphan who may be too old to
be adopted. He gets a break from his dreary life in the convent, when he
and the others leave the orphanage for a holiday by the seaside. When rumour
gets out that two of the seaside residents are looking to adopt one of the
orphans, friendships are tested and new alliances are made. In the end,
each boy learns something about himself and his place in the world.
The film wonderfully portrays the bonds of friendship, humanity, family
and love through the strong performances of the four boys. Radcliffe is
said to have jumped at the chance to play Maps, a character vastly different
to Harry Potter, and was touched by the simple but beautiful story. According
to director Rod Hardy, the chemistry and maturity of the four boys was genuine,
radiating a real friendship between them that was central to making this
film work.
Decmber Boys stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jack Thompson, Teresa Palmer, Lee Cormie,
Christian Byers and James Fraser. The film is directed by Rod Hardy who
will be joining us on-stage after the screening for an audience Q and discussion
about the film. View the trailer on-line here http://wip.warnerbros.com/decemberboys/
