NEW DIRECTORS IN FILM
Sydney Film Festival
The Sydney Film Festival in partnership with the State Government of New
South Wales today launched an Official International Competition to reward
‘New Directions in Film’ commencing at the 55th annual Sydney
Film Festival in June 2008.
The New South Wales government’s substantial, multi-year commitment
of $1.8 million AUD will enable the Sydney Film Festival to become the first
Australian festival to have an Official Competition. This status has been
granted by FIAPF, the regulating organisation for international film festivals.
SFF Principal Sponsor, Hunter Hall Investment Management, have pledged a
$60,000 AUD cash prize to be awarded to the winning film in the ‘specialised
competition’, the most significant cash prize for film in Australia.
The prize will be warded for ‘new directions in film’, recognising
movies that ‘have emotional power and resonance; are audacious, cutting
edge and courageous; and go beyond the usual treatment of their subject
matter’.
The Official Competition will be open to fiction films from all countries,
including Australia. To be eligible, a film will be 75 minutes or longer;
will not have been released outside its country of origin more than 12 months
before the start date of the Sydney Film Festival; and will be an Australian
premiere.
Competition guidelines will be available 1 October 2007 for entry in the
Sydney Film Festival, 4 – 22 June 2008.

CHANDON PICTURES & DEXTER
Popcorn Taxi
CHANDON PICTURES
Popcorn Taxi presents a FREE Screening and Q &A of Chandon Pictures
with creators Rob Carlton and Alex Weirness.
Wed Oct 17th, 7:00pm – Greater Union Bondi
Be part of the first audience in the world to preview Chandon Pictures,
a new T.V. comedy/drama series from the wild and wacky minds of 2006 Tropfest
winners Rob Carlton and Alex Weirnss , about the amusing misadventures of
struggling video production company 'Chandon Pictures'. The 8-part series
features a host of guest actors, including Josh Lawson, Angus Sampson, Justine
Clarke, Drew Forsythe, Peter Phelps and Graham Blundell. Join us for an
advance screening of the first two episodes from the series, followed by
an on-stage Q with the shows creators.
Full program details here: http://www.popcorntaxi.com.au/event.php?event_id=550
DEXTER + Q&A with Actor Michael Hall
Popcorn Taxi invites you meet Actor Michael C. Hall C(of Six Feet Under
fame) for an on-stage discussion, and preview of his new TV show Dexter,
an innovative new crime/thriller series about a Miami Police blood splatter
expert, who moonlights as a serial killer.
Based on Darkly Dreaming Together, a novel by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter is one
of the most complicated characters ever to grace the small screen. He has
a steady girlfriend who adores him, he's the main support for his sister,
and a respected member of the Miami Police Department, but he is also a
vigilante serial killer who hunts down people that have escaped justice,
and ensures they never commit another crime.
Every once and a while a show comes along that is so creepy and so intriguing
that you feel compelled to watch. Dexter is one of those shows. The serial
killer part will no doubt make some of you squirm, but those who enjoy characters
that aren't bad, but aren't totally that good either, will completely (and
morbidly) love this new series.
This program includes a screening of the pilot and second episode from Dexter,
and features an on-stage discussion with Actor Michael C.Hall about his
title role.
Dexter will premiere exclusively in Australia on Showcase, the new premium
television channel on the Showtime network in December.
Seating is limited, so book early to avoid disappointment!
