PANELISTS CONFIRMED
Industry Panel – The Film Festival Experience

Tuesday November 6th, 6.30pm

Just finished your film and not sure which festival to send it to first? Been accepted into a festival and want to maximise your experience? Have you wondered what film festivals look for when selecting their line-up of films?
Answering these questions and more will be:

BRONWYN KIDD – Director of the Flickerfest International Film Festival
As the director of Flickerfest for the past 11 years Bronwyn has curated hundreds of short film programmes for both the festival, its national touring programme and many other international film festivals including most recently the Tenth London Australian film festival at the Barbican. For the past three years she has been one of the management committee members and key organisers of the International Short Film Conference [ISFC], the international body that advises on short films festivals and protocol throughout the world. In 2002 Bronwyn opened the Flickerfest short film bureau to distribute Australian short films internationally. The bureau now represents over 90 of Australia’s best shorts.

LINDA TIZARD – Head, Development and Investment, NSW Film and Television Office
Linda has worked in the development, production, financing and sales of independent film and television projects. DEAN FRANCIS – Writer/Director
Dean has directed 13 short films and a short feature. His films include 'Crazy Richard', 'Afterlife', 'Too Little Justice', 'Boy's Grammar' and most recently 'Vermin'. His short films are currently featuring at festivals in New York and San Francisco, have won him much acclaim including an Australian Directors Association Award nomination and premiers at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. Dean has also attended the Berlin and Palm Springs Int'l Film Festival.

HEATHER OXENHAM – Producer

SCULPTURE BY THE SCHOOLS
Promotional Clip

I am producing a small promotional clip for Sculptures by the Schools between November 15 – 18. I am seeking a filmmaker to work on this project. I will guide the project so there is an effective use of time to maximum creative advantage. The filmmaker will work alongside the organisers to script the shoot and watch the edit process to delivery. The advantage for a filmmaker here is gaining experience in executing these mini-corporate clips and retaining focus on the desired outcome at all stages of production.

It is a one-man band project with a small remuneration of $400. I have PDX10 and sticks, a handful of lights and FCP to cut on. What is required is enthusiasm and a measure of skill at digital filmmaking.

THE HERO PROJECT
Deadline 17 December

In an opportunity of a lifetime, Australians aged 12-18 have the chance to present their idea to an international panel of broadcasters and mingle with professional filmmakers. From country towns to camel farms, vineyards to suburban beaches, opal fields to concrete jungles, young people will have the chance to document the world around them. The challenge is on: send us a two-page proposal that describes how you would document your world in a short film to be screened on Australian TV. Tell us your story! FESTIVALS + EVENTS

2000 FEET AWAY
FrogBattleship in Association with B Sharp presents

For the month of November the Downstairs Theatre at Belvoir St. will become the state of Iowa, USA, as director Lee Lewis and her 11-person cast present Weigh’s chilling portrait of a society grappling with the problem of protecting children from sexual predators. This new play by Anthony Weigh follows the local deputy sheriff (played by Colin Moody), as he struggles to enforce a law which has damaging consequences in the community he works so hard to protect.

2,000 Feet Away asks the question of how society should deal with its most unwanted citizens. When Neighborhood Watch is just not enough and prison is not an answer, what options does a community have? The play probes the outcomes of the Iowa law, examining the rising tide of fear in our societies and the impulse towards a vigilante style of justice as our legal systems fail to offer solutions to our biggest social problems.

To win a double pass for a night of your choice: from 3 Nov – 9 Nov simply email Katrina at k.beck@metroscreen.org.au with 2000 Feet Away in the subject and be sure to include your address so we can post you the pass and your membership number.

FLICKER
Exhibition at Artspace

Sydney artist Brent Grayburn’s new exhibition ‘Flicker’ is an experience that takes as a point of reference Joseph Conrad’s book ‘Heart of Darkness’, and its principle of the Panopticon, a prison building designed to allow prisoners to be observed without the viewer being seen.

Surrounded by four screens of imagery on opposing walls, those viewing ‘Flicker’ will become isolated within the centre of the space. Swamps, rivers and a bleaker world carry two minds toward each other within a declining environment where even representation has its doubts; a deluded place with a tinnie and an outboard.
The 4 surrounding screens will run out 23 minutes of highly produced imagery, that follow Conrad's epic journey upriver into the unknown.

‘Flicker’ is a journey away from the commonly understood rules of video space into a more haphazard location, where chunks of footage are removed until there is just black, no sky and often no landscape, just representations. Two characters, M + K, drift in a cut up narrative that is confused and out of balance, with images colliding, occasionally synching, observing. Everything is watching. Nothing is real. Flicker is a softer journey into a darker place.
