tv image   WELCOME TO METRO SCREEN'S WEEKLY eNews – 08 November, 2007
I particularly enjoyed learning about, and actually doing, all the different crew roles such as sound recording, producing and editing. This gave me an overall view of filmmaking and helped me work out which area I wanted to specialise in. Two weeks after graduating, I had my first job on a feature documentary, ‘The Eternity Man’, as a locations attachment.” Past Certificate IV in Screen graduate Elizabeth Hoy.

CERTIFICATE IV IN SCREEN
2008 Courses Enrolling Now

Metro Screen’s popular Certificate IV in Screen [five months full-time] provides a comprehensive education in drama and documentary and is a great option for those wishing to work in film or TV.

Extensive access to quality equipment and close collaboration with industry tutors makes this course an excellent learning experience and amazing value for money.

This intensive learning experience is composed of three production phases: documentary, studio drama and location drama. A minimum of six films are produced, at least two for each phase. With the art of storytelling a major focus of the course, participants develop their own scripts, pitch their ideas for production and secure a key crew role on at least one production per phase, while fulfilling supporting roles on other productions.

Participants learn on broadcast quality HD digital cameras and work in professional level production and post-production facilities, including our Mac Computer Lab. Industry professionals teach technical and practical aspects of production including camera and lighting, editing, producing and directing.
During the course, guest speakers give students an overview of employment opportunities in the industry and give advice on applying for jobs and funding.

At the completion of the course, final works are screened at a public graduation event. Each participant receives a nationally recognised Certificate IV in Screen qualification and a personalised DVD showreel: an invaluable resource when seeking employment or funding.

HOPE AWARDS
Short Film Competition

The Hope Awards is designed to encourage the creation of short films demonstrating a clear message of hope for people with mental illness, their families and careers.

Successfully piloted in 2005/06, the Hope Awards competition was developed to increase awareness of mental illness, and contribute to a reduction in the associated stigma that often prevents people from seeking help.

For the 2007/08 Hope Awards competition, two winners and two runners-up in each of the categories of drama and documentary, will share a pool of $20,000 in prize money. Additionally, a Committee’s Choice award of $2,500 this year will allow the judges to recognise the efforts of an entrant who does not have experience in film-making yet still produces a compelling film.

The 2007/08 Hope Awards competition opens on Monday, 3rd December 2007 and closes on Friday, 28th March 2008. Entries will be judged in April by a Steering Committee of six national mental health organisations and a select panel of expert judges. Winners will be announced in July 2008. Contact the organisers on 02 9325 4444 for a copy of the DVD compilation of 2005/06 finalists.

TROPWEST
Free Event

Australia’s most famous short film festival, Sony Tropfest, is heading west in search of fresh blood.

TropWest, a free event for aspiring Western Sydney filmmakers of all ages, will be held on November 7 from 6–8pm at the Roxy Cinema in George Street, Parramatta.

Sony Tropfest has joined forces with the NSW Film and Television Office (FTO) and Information and Cultural Exchange (ICE) to present TropWest 2007.

TropWest guests will get the inside scoop on Trop Jr, a new competition for budding filmmakers 15 and under. Trop Jr will screen for the first time in 2008 as a special family program during the afternoon before the main Sony Tropfest event.

Speakers at TropWest will explain the process and selection criteria for entering shorts of less than seven minutes into Sony Tropfest. Some favourite Sony Tropfest shorts will also be screened. There will also be an opportunity for questions, and for people interested in screen stories to network and talk to one another.

Entry guidelines for Sony Tropfest and Trop Jr can be found at www.tropfest.com and www.tropjr.com with entries accepted online until Thursday 10 January 2008.
Both festivals will take place on Sunday 17 February 2008.
