CERTIFICATE IV IN SCREEN
2008 Courses Enrolling Now

Metro Screen’s popular Certificate IV in Screen [five months full-time] provides a comprehensive education in drama and documentary and is a great option for those wishing to work in film or TV.

Extensive access to quality equipment and close collaboration with industry tutors makes this course an excellent learning experience and amazing value for money.

This intensive learning experience is composed of three production phases: documentary, studio drama and location drama. A minimum of six films are produced, at least two for each phase. With the art of storytelling a major focus of the course, participants develop their own scripts, pitch their ideas for production and secure a key crew role on at least one production per phase, while fulfilling supporting roles on other productions.

Participants learn on broadcast quality HD digital cameras and work in professional level production and post-production facilities, including our Mac Computer Lab. Industry professionals teach technical and practical aspects of production including camera and lighting, editing, producing and directing.
During the course, guest speakers give students an overview of employment opportunities in the industry and give advice on applying for jobs and funding.

At the completion of the course, final works are screened at a public graduation event. Each participant receives a nationally recognised Certificate IV in Screen qualification and a personalised DVD showreel: an invaluable resource when seeking employment or funding.

ABC PITCHING COMPETITION
Deadline January 14

ABC TV Arts, Entertainment & Comedy and ABC TV Documentaries (Science) will finance the development of a Science and Arts documentary project to the value of AU$10,000 in a pitching competition at the AIDC from February 20-22, 2008.

The collaboration between these two highly divergent cultures is now a dynamic area of practice. Increasing numbers of artists and scientists are exploring each other's ideas, materials and working methods. Artists are inspired by science and technology as well as providing fresh critical viewpoints of the consequences of new knowledge. The artistic impulse is itself an area of research by scientists.

Proposals from science and arts filmmakers that are interesting innovative formats are welcomed. We would like to receive applications that demonstrate new thoughts or new concepts on how a convergence of arts and science could be expressed on television.

ABC TV Arts and ABC TV Docs are calling for treatments of up to 3 pages for either a one-hour documentary or a documentary series for prime time slots on ABC TV.
The deadline for applications is January 14 2008.

2007 POSSIBLE WORLDS
Canadian Film Festival: THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS
2ND December, 6.30pm – Chauvel Cinema

Sarah Timmins returns home to Sydney to present her first feature as producer, The Tracey Fragments. The former film and TV production student of the University of Technology , Sydney, was born in Paddington, just a few blocks away from the Chauvel Cinema where her film will premiere.

Rising star Ellen Page (Hard Candy, Juno) gives a raw and powerful performance as the tormented 15 year-old heroin, Tracey Berkowitz in this coming of age film. Tracey's journey leads us into the dark underbelly of a city, into the emotional cesspool of her home, through the brutality of her high school and her soaring fantasies of Billy Zero – her rock’n’roll saviour.

"I'm thrilled to be presenting The Tracey Fragments in Sydney", says Sarah. "It's my home town, where I learnt to love films and decided to become a filmmaker myself. I'm also a bit nervous because my film is wild and experimental, but I really hope that the adventurous Sydney filmgoers I know and love will embrace the experience".

The Canadian Film Festival screens from 29th November to 5th December.

THE BEE
Darlinghurst Theatre Company and MoFu CoSu

By Hideki Noda and Colin Teevan
Based on the original story Mushiriai (Plucking at Each Other) by Yasutaka Tsutsui

A stinging bee may hurt the creature that threatens it, but in the process destroys itself...

What would you do if your family were being held hostage be an escaped criminal? Your house besieged by cameras and reporters, the world demanding to know how you feel?

When Mr Ido arrives home on his son’s birthday, he discovers that Ogoro, an escaped convict, has taken his wife and child hostage inside his home. Bamboozled by the media, yet finding the police response to be somewhat apathetic, Mr Ido decides to take matters into his own hands. He enters the home of Ogoro’s wife and son and begins to conduct his own form of ‘negotiation’ using Ogoro’s family as leverage.

The Bee is an erotic and bloody exploration of vengeance and the hunger for ultimate supremacy.

"This is a highly unusual theatrical gem; part slapstick comedy, part satire, part macabre dance." Time Out

SEPTEMBER
Win Tickets

To celebrate the release of Peter Carstairs’ feature directorial debut, September, the first film to be released as part of the Tropfest Feature Program, Hopscotch Films are giving Metro Screen members the chance to win a complimentary double pass valid across the weekend of November 23, 24 and 25.

Set in the sweeping Western Australian wheat belt in 1968, September tells the story of two 16 year old boys, one black and one white, whose pure and unaffected friendship begins to fall apart under the pressures of a changing social and political climate. Ed and Paddy have been best friends for as long as they remember, but the winds of change, however, soon blow their way and for the first time, the boys start to see things as they really are – and the result is heartbreaking. With a superb script, outstanding performances and luminous cinematography, September reveals – layer by layer – the tumultuous human emotions beneath a segregated inequity in Australia’s recent past. September is a haunting and evocative film about the power of friendship.

IN CINEMAS NOVEMBER 29

To win simply email Katrina at k.beck@metroscreen.org.au with SEPTEMBER in the subject and be sure to include your full name and address so we can mail you the passes along with your membership number

METRO SCREEN CONGRATULATES

METRO SCREEN SPAA FRINGE
Report
Winner of the pass to this years SPAA Fringe through the Mtero Screen Network Pitching Session, Georgia Clarke has this to say about her experience:
SPAA Fringe was another fantastic year of friendly filmmakers networking madly over a short two days at the Paddington Town Hall. Personally I get the most out of the one-on-ones – what better way to sell yourself and your project than 30 uninterrupted minutes with the target of your choice? I chewed the ear of young guns Nathan Mayfield and Tracey Robertson from Hoodlum, Marcus Gillezeua from Firelight, Aidan O'Bryan from WBMC and Nerida Moore from the FTO, all razor-smart people with great advice.

Insightful, funny keynotes from Todd Abbott (who is so ridiculously charming he deserves his own series) and Andrea Buck and Dee McLachlanan (who I admire immensely, and will be consequently helping out with publicity for The Jammed's DVD release come March 5). Brendan Cook (Picture Drift) and the afore mentioned Nathan and Tracey must also be highly commended for their entertaining and comprehensive presentations that certainly put my PowerPoint skills to shame. I also met Andy Walker, who is producing Roger Simpson's new series for Showtime, 'Satisfaction', who had some great stories about these innovative new broadcasters.

Top that off with any number of great foyer/ lounge/ pub conversations with passionate emerging writers, producers and directors, all keen to swap war stories and contacts, and we have another awesome SPAA Fringe!
