SONY ZIP ONE DAY CAMERA COURSE
Starts December 8
This intensive course covers the key camera operations and functions of
the SONY ZIP camera. A very popular camera with many independent camera
operators, the ZIP produces high-quality results under a wide range of conditions.
Areas covered include framing, exposure, white balance and focus as well
as camera handling techniques, lighting techniques and an explanation of
the High Definition format. Participants will have the chance to ask specific
questions and will benefit from the tutor’s industry experience and tips
on getting the most out of the camera.

Give your creative side free rein this January! Using high quality digital
cameras and editing equipment, learn both creative and technical aspects
of filmmaking as you collaborate in small groups to produce a short film.

COURSE OUTLINE
From script development and storyboarding, to shooting and lighting, and
finally to editing and grading using Final Cut Pro, all course participants
will learn through a practical, hands-on approach. Working groups will be
kept small to ensure that all participants get the opportunity to rotate
through key crew roles and get first hand experience with operating equipment.
Tutors are all current film industry practitioners and specialists in their
areas. The course includes screenings and master class sessions with inspiring,
award-winning filmmakers.
This course is suitable for anybody interested in kick-starting their education
and career in filmmaking.
At the end of the course, participants will be well equipped to make their
own short film productions. Those who bring concepts that they wish to develop
will receive expert advice and mentorship. Students will take home a DVD
copy of their work at the end of the course.

CERTIFICATE IV IN SCREEN
2008 Courses Enrolling Now
Metro Screen’s popular Certificate IV in Screen [five months full-time]
provides a comprehensive education in drama and documentary and is a great
option for those wishing to work in film or TV.
Extensive access to quality equipment and close collaboration with industry
tutors makes this course an excellent learning experience and amazing value
for money.
This intensive learning experience is composed of three production phases:
documentary, studio drama and location drama. A minimum of six films are
produced, at least two for each phase. With the art of storytelling a major
focus of the course, participants develop their own scripts, pitch their
ideas for production and secure a key crew role on at least one production
per phase, while fulfilling supporting roles on other productions.
Participants learn on broadcast quality HD digital cameras and work in professional
level production and post-production facilities, including our Mac Computer
Lab. Industry professionals teach technical and practical aspects of production
including camera and lighting, editing, producing and directing.
During the course, guest speakers give students an overview of employment
opportunities in the industry and give advice on applying for jobs and funding.
At the completion of the course, final works are screened at a public graduation
event. Each participant receives a nationally recognised Certificate IV
in Screen qualification and a personalised DVD showreel: an invaluable resource
when seeking employment or funding.

This school holidays make a short film and learn to be a filmmaker in one
of two intensive, hands-on digital video workshops for 11 – 16yr olds.

Workshop For 14 – 16yr olds
[Jan 16th, 17th and 18th, 2008]
Develop your filmmaking skills in your choice of directing, screenwriting,
acting for the screen, camera, sound, editing, music composition or art
direction. Sink your teeth into your desired crew role and expand your knowledge
base by working closely with our experienced tutors. You will emerge from
the workshop with an in depth understanding of filmmaking, as well as the
practical experience of making your own short film, from start to finish!

OUR TOWN
Aspiring Filmmakers
Metro Screen is looking for aspiring filmmakers to create OUR TOWN, a documentary
about the Clarence River.
OUR TOWN is a cross-cultural documentary that will explore the importance
of the Clarence River to the local community. Filmmakers Leonie Dickinson
and Rebecca Ingram will work with local young people (16 to 25yrs) to construct
this short documentary.
Participants of OUR TOWN will learn skills in story development, camera
& sound technique, film production and editing.
OUR TOWN will be created over six weeks and will involve three weekend training
workshops. The first workshop is on 27th & 28th October. Participation
in OUR TOWN is free but numbers are limited so register quickly.
OUR TOWN is a project of the Mobile Unit, Metro Screen’s offsite training
and project department. The Mobile Unit provide people in regional NSW the
skills to make short films, documentaries and new media works.

Technical Assistant: Training
15 – 27 hours per week

METRO SCREEN is looking for an energetic and skilled person to work in a
technical support role in our training department.
Metro Screen is a production and training facility catering to emerging
film, video and multimedia practitioners. Metro Screen offers accredited
training, professional development workshops, industry seminars, and skills
development in film, television, and digital technology.
Applicants for this position will have demonstrated skills in digital media
and video production, advanced computer skills and knowledge of media compression,
file organisation and storage.
The position involves working in an administrative office setting. Applicants
must be able to work unsupervised and be excellent problem solvers, but
also work as part of a team to support the technical and logistical operations
of the organization. Applicants must be confident and effective communicators
when liaising with students and tutors.
The position will commence in mid January 2008. Working hours will vary
between 15 and 25 hours per week with some evening and weekend work required.
The salary is $33,000 pa pro rata (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation
and leave loading. Metro Screen is located in the Paddington Town Hall.
Applicants should provide a resume and a cover letter which addresses the
selection criteria below.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
• Knowledge of and experience with digital media, video production
and non linear post production.
• Advanced computer skills (mac based platform) and familiarity with
file management protocols
• Proven experience in administration, especially time-critical scheduling

• Ability to use initiative, problem solve and identify critical issues.
• Enthusiastic, flexible and reliable team player

• Experience in a technical support role.

Looking to gain valuable production experience over summer?
Nocturnal TV is a volunteer run collective showcasing the sights and sounds
of Sydney’s underground. We aim to be your TV version of your local
street press, cutting edge, cheeky and giving exposure to local performers
that don't get it anywhere else. We focus on cool nights out and innovative
musical acts, covering all ranges of youth music from breaks and hip-hop
to techno, rock, indie and jazz. We have happily completed three seasons
and are now looking for contributors for Nocturnal Season IV to work on
a volunteer basis.

Who's ready to make an impact in this business? SAC Industries is looking
for an enthusiastic and creative camera operator for involvement in two
projects over the summer.
The first is a pilot to be marketed to networks after some on-location shooting

Extras Required
A Tropfest Comedy 'Will Ferrell' style film currently in production is looking
for extras with acting experience to appear in what will be a fun film to
work on, with a very experienced crew. This film will be shot in the week
commencing 3rd December in the Eastern Suburbs over two days. Extras will
be a focal point of the film, so we are looking for people with a great
comic style, who aren't afraid to really have fun on camera.

The Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) and ABC TV are proud
to present ‘Underscore’, a unique opportunity for talented young
screen composers. APRA and ABC TV are offering emerging composers a commission
to write original music for an ABC production or to write a package of screen
music for use by ABC producers. To enter applicants must score a 30 second
opening titles theme for a fictional youth program and two minutes of incidental
music from ‘The Silence’.

Screen composer Antony Partos, who has composed music for feature films
including ‘Home Song Stories’, ‘Walking on Water’
and ‘Monkey Mask’ will mentor the successful composer. Entry

by 3 former inmates of the Parramatta Girls Home. ‘Parragirls’
is a support network and contact register for former inmates of the Parramatta
Girls Home including family, friends and supporters.
We are negotiating with various authorities for access to the main site
of the girls home (now Norma Parker Detention Centre) in the hope that we
will stage a major reunion in 2008 and also hope to be able to open the
site up to the general public on the day. The last reunion at Parramatta
occurred in 2003. The Reunion Event is part of a planned action to lobby
for the memorialisation of the site and its dedication as a museum/resource/archive
centre for Forgotten Australians.
The PFFP and ‘Parragirls’ receives no funding, we hold garage
sales to raise funds for our activities. As part of our campaign we would
like to produce a number of short films that would include a general history
of the site and interviews with Parragirls. We would be interested to hear
from anyone who could undertake these projects and would also appreciate
your organization lending its voice and support to our campaign.

Caught short will end 2007 with an exclusive Sydney screening of the 2007
Australian International Animation Festival (AIAF) on Thursday December
6. Help us celebrate our last event of the year with two great programs
of animated wonder. There will be an Australian panorama and a ‘best
of’ International Showcase with films from Spain, Sweden, the UK and
the USA. Australia’s premiere animation festival, AIAF, has searched
the globe far and wide to curate a program of the latest and greatest animated
treats. The two programs feature an eclectic collection of recently released
short animated works and offer a true insight into the current international
animation scene.

Presented by IndiVision, an initiative of the Australian Film Commission.
A young country defining its cultural identity in the shadow of the American

market, resourceful producers and filmmakers achieving outstanding results
on tiny budgets... Sounds familiar?
Find out what challenges we share with the Canadian film industry and what
lessons can be learned from indie filmmakers north of Hollywood in this
insightful panel discussion.
The Panel will be chaired by Australian filmmaker Darren Ashton ( Thunderstruck,
Razzle Dazzle).
Megan Simpson Huberman, Director of the IndiVision Project Lab, joins award-winning
guest directors and producers from Canada in an informal discussion sure
to energize Australian filmmakers and film lovers alike. Speakers include
Chaz Thorne (director, Just Buried & screenwriter, Poor Boy's Game),
Sarah Timmins (producer, The Tracey Fragments ), Corey Marr (producer, Who
Loves The Sun) and Robin Schlaht (director, To Be Romeo & Juliet).

WESTGARTH FILM FESTIVAL 2007
6 to 9 December
‘The second Westgarth Film Festival returns to one of Melbourne’s
favourite iconic cinemas, the Palace Westgarth Cinema from 6-9th December
2007 with a program packed full of cinematic gems. Over three days and four
nights you’ll be treated to a candy bar full of treats including special
features, celebrity cinema stars and comedians, classic silent features
brought to life with musical scores, short films from Australia and the
globe, filmmaker workshops, movie trivia and much, much more.
Away from the big screen, festival goers and budding filmmakers will be
able to take part in two free events, ‘Filmmaker Speed Dating’,
where you may meet your leading lady, grip, gaffer or runner of your dreams

‘WHITE SOUND’
Sarah Tracton
'‘White Sound’ made in this years Metro Screen Documentary Scholarship
course by Sarah Tracton who is deaf has been asked to screen alongside ‘Who
Loves The Sun’ at this years Canadian Film Festival.
‘Who Loves The Sun’ is also opening the Canadian Film Festival
as well as appearing at the special event on December 3 that coincides with
International Day of People with a Disability.
NSW Minister for Disability Services Kristina Keneally said the Premiere
will celebrate International Day of People with a Disability, with the cinema
being adapted so the whole audience can savour the experience.
“On-screen captions will be displayed for people with a hearing impairment,
while audio description is available for people with vision impairment,
Ms Keneally said. “Seats are being removed for wheelchair access.”
Joining Minister Keneally as guest speakers at the Premiere will be Who
Loves the Sun director Matt Bissonnette, along with Sydney actor Alex Jones
and filmmaker Sarah Tracton who will talk abut her film ‘White Sound’.
