02. METRO SCREEN TRAINING MANAGER POSITION

Metro Screen is looking for a highly motivated person to join our team as Training Manager.
 
As a registered training organisation (RTO) Metro Screen offers accredited training, professional development workshops, industry seminars, and skills development in film, television, and digital technology.

Salary range is $43,000 - $50,000 pa plus superannuation and leave loading. Metro Screen is located in the Sydney Film Centre in Paddington Town Hall.  

Previous Metro Screen Training Managers have gone on to work at agencies such as the ABC, the NSW Film and Television Office and NSW Ministry for the Arts.

03. CHANNEL FREE YOUTH EASTER MOVIE MAKING WORKSHOP

Young people between 11 and 16 are being given the opportunity to make a short movie over three days at Metro Screen. This Video Production intensive workshop will run after Easter on April 26, 27 and 28.  

This course will teach you everything you need to know to make a short movie.  

Gain hands on experience with digital video technology learn all aspects of video production including: camera operation, lighting, audio, story boarding, scripting, directing and editing. Participants will shoot on Canon XL1 Mini DV cameras in Metro Screen’s Studio 1 and off site on location and finally edit their movies using Final Cut Pro.

This workshop is taught by highly qualifies industry professionals including:

Angelica Mesiti, Sydney based video artist and member of the internationally acclaimed performance group, the King Pins.

Dean Francis, recent AFTRS directing graduate.  Dean has directed many short films and a short feature.  His films include Crazy Richard, Afterlife, Too Little Justice, Boy's Grammar and most recently Vermin.  

Craig Boreham, award winning short film director who has just returned to Sydney after participating in the Berlin International Film Festival's - Berlinale Talent campus of which only four fellow Australians were chosen.
 
Workshop fees are $230 and subsidised through the Department of Family and Community Services. Channel Free is also able to offer two further discounts for low-income families.

04. METRO SCREEN PARTNERS WITH atyp FOR SHOOT: ACTING + FILMMAKING WORKSHOP

To engage theatre students with the medium of television, film and video atyp has developed a unique training course with Metro Screen. 16 students between 16 and 26 will produce, perform and record their stories for the screen.  
 
Led by Michael Bates students of “shoot: acting + filmmaking” will create stories and ideas at atyp and then learn to direct, shoot and edit this material at Metro Screen over six days.

professional gear and, at the end of the week, take home a professional DVD
of your work.

05. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT SERVICES AT METRO SCREEN
Announcing two more script editor and production consultants to choose from.  

Metro Screen’s Project Development Services provide one on one assessments of your scripts and treatments.  

Choose from our database of script editors and producer consultants including:

Louise Smith. Louise co-produced The Rage In Placid Lake and was sound post production supervisor on Little Fish Louise has produced numerous short films, documentaries and feature length scripts that have picked up international awards and been screened at Sundance and Telluride. Louise has also produced music clips and TV commercial for the likes of The Super Jesus, Toyota and Yamaha. Louise is currently in development on three productions and is financing another with the Edgerton brothers.

Carolyn Johnson. Following a career in merchant banking and the business world, Carolyn Johnson commenced her career in film production in 1993.  She has produced six award winning short films and worked as a producer, production manager and line producer in television, documentary and drama. She is an AFTRS graduate with a feature film in post-production and a feature, TV series, and documentary in the advanced stages of development.

Once you have submitted your script, synopsis or treatment our qualified industry professionals will assess your material. This is followed by your own one-hour face-to-face meeting. Discuss your work in detail with your consultant and have your questions answered.

This is an excellent opportunity for filmmakers and screen practitioners to be given sound advice on what dose and doesn’t work. Gain tips, insider knowledge and give your next project the best chance of achieving success wether it’s a short, documentary or a feature film. Advice is always worthwhile especially when it comes from those who are working successfully in the film and screen industries.

Cost: SHORT – defined as up to 35 pages, $140. SHORT FEATURE – defined as over 35 pages and up to 55 pages, $195. FEATURE – defined as over 55 pages and up to 100 pages, $275. EPIC FEATURE – defined as over 100 pages, price upon application.  

This service is provided to members of Metro Screen only. You can become a Metro Screen member when you book your Project Development Service.

06. SUBSIDISED ANIMATION AND DESIGN COURSE

Metro Screen’s Mobile Unit is offering a fully funded Certificate III in Multimedia open to residents of Newcastle and the surrounding areas. No technical skill or previous experience is required.

Running from May to October this five-month practical course will offer students the knowledge and skills to produce digital design and animations for screen productions, including feature films. Participants will create animated websites, digitally manipulated stills images, moving 2D animations, interactive interfaces, animated titles and produce their own show reel. Software taught includes Flash, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Dream weaver.  

A proven first step into the digital design and animation industries, this course offers the opportunity for potential work placement arrangements on graduation.

Taught by industry professionals from the local media industries this course is endorsed by both Christine Armstrong from Director of Film Hunter and Clarissa Arndt from the Ministry for the Arts.  

This course is $275 and valued at $6480 per participant. Participants numbers are limited to 12. Enrolments close April 28th. This course is Austudy + Abstudy approved.

Documentary Making - STARTS THIS FRIDAY!
Explore the more practical side of documentaries in this intensive short
course.  Areas covered include directing non-actors, interviewing
techniques, basic camera set-ups and sound recording. There will also be a
presentation on funding possibilities and the application process to funding
bodies. This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills
necessary to direct your own doco.

Advanced Screenwriting
Take your screenplay beyond the basics in this interactive workshop-style course. Present your script and gain constructive feedback to strengthen future drafts. This course is designed for writers to develop acute analytical and critical abilities, and to identify areas of your story to improve. All students are to bring along either a short film script or the first 10 pages of a feature.

Directing the Actor
Directing actors in the rehearsal period and on set is a vital aspect of
screen storytelling. Learn a variety of rehearsal techniques by stepping
into the shoes of the actor, and greatly enhance the onscreen performances
in your production.  Work closely with professional actors in developing
strong characters focusing on various techniques including; improvisation,
back-story, script subtext and role-playing.

Melbourne based film production business seeking enthusiastic
camera operators for filming events in Sydney. Pay is $150 to $200 per day.

09. SEEKING AVID EDITOR FOR FISHING DVD - UNPAID

We are producing a Fishing DVD and are looking for a keen skilled Avid Editor to cut our project.  All material had been digitised.  Distributors have been lined up and a marketing plan is in place.  
 
Qualifications: Avid Adrenalin, Some experience in HD, Segment Producing Skills- preferable, good working knowledge of Photoshop and other graphics packages is beneficial

This is an unpaid position but allows for great exposure with a team of experienced filmmakers who have a slate of doco style projects lined up.  *Successful applicants to become part of the team for future projects.

10. SEEKING ACTOR FOR SHORT 35MM FILM ‘FRAIL’

We are looking for an older man to play a corpse in a 35mm short film ‘Frail’, written/directed by Alex Murawski.
 
Frail is a story about the stark confrontation of death. Mother and her two daughters wait outside the hospital morgue to say goodbye to the recently deceased grandfather.

James Hogan, (Grandfather) died aged eighty-one due to complications arising from stomach cancer. James was a firm man who was a hard taskmaster to his children.
He was conscientious and reliable in his work on the wharves; however he found it difficult to transfer anything beyond these qualities to his family life.
 
Physically Grandfather is to have a well lived in face. In addition, he is thin and gaunt due to the illness he has suffered of late.

13. METRO SCREEN’S FILMMAKER’S STUDIO GIVEAWAY

Get up close and personal with Cate Shortland celebrated director of Somersault at the Filmmaker’s Studio Launch, April 20.

Cate will screen sections from her short film Flowergirl, feature film Somersault and two part TV series The Silence. Find out about Cate’s film influences, how she got her start and how she works as a filmmaker. Audience members will also be given the opportunity to ask questions in the question and answer time provided. As this is the launch of the Filmmaker’s Studio the night will be extended to include food, wine and a chance to network and discuss the evenings conversation.

14. METRO SCREEN CONGRATULATES ITS MEMBERS PRODUCTION GROUP [MPG]

Metro Screen’s Members Production Group is a vibrant and enthusiastic group of dedicated filmmakers who are constantly making films and helping each other out. In the latest funding round for the NSW Film and Television Office’s Young Filmmakers Fund [NSW FTO’s YFF] two MPG members hit the jackpot.
 
Congratulations to Raen Fraser (writer director) and Dinusha Ratnaweera
(Producer) who have been successful in securing $30k to make their short drama Lullaby later this year.

Lullaby tells the story of a young family who are thrown into turmoil when
their infant daughter dies suddenly. Simultaneously haunted by the seductive influence of memory and tormented by the incomprehensible cruelty of fate, Sally and Daniel inhabit a world where the boundaries of reality are blurred by grief and longing.

Metro Screen congratulates its filmmakers.
