05. Certificate IV in Screen Enrolling Now
WORK ON SIX FILMS IN SIX MONTHS

With a maximum of 15 students this hands-on course provides a comprehensive education in all aspects of short film and documentary making. Production areas explored include screenwriting, directing, camera, lighting, sound, editing, and producing.

Students learn using new professional Sony DSR 450 broadcast quality digital video cameras, Metro Screen’s sound stage studio and G5 iMac Final Cut Pro Media Lab.

Six films and a TV production are produced over three rigorous production slates; a documentary, TV studio production and major short film. Three productions are made in each documentary and short film slate with students holding a major crew role on at least one production and supporting roles on other projects. Students will also develop and take roles on a TV studio production made in Metro Screen’s Studio A.

The art of storytelling is a focus of the course, with time spent on the development of ideas and screenplays. All students will learn screen language and screenwriting techniques, essential skills for those interested in pursuing drama, TV and documentary projects. These skills will also be developed through a number of smaller production exercises where students will be able to experiment with creative and technical concepts.

An understanding of character, dramatic structure, tone and themes will be gained as well as an understanding of shot sizes, camera angles and how to edit it all together. Students will also develop a personalised DVD show reel to assist them in launching their filmmaking careers.

Each unit is taught by working industry professionals. For detailed information on tutors please contact Metro Screen’s Training Department on 02 9361 5318 or training@metroscreen.org.au

Students final works are showcased at a public graduationscreening. Assistance is given to student productions through film festival entries and ongoing support is provided to graduates through advice, contact with film industry networks and access to Metro Screen’s production subsidy rounds.

Graduates have gone on to work in the film and television industries, been awarded at local and international film festivals, gained acceptance into the AFTRS, and screened their works on free to air television.
Annmaree Bell set up her own production company, Azure productions. With a large repertoire of short films they are in pre production on their first feature film. “This course allowed me to start Azure,’ says Annmaree.

Nat Amoore’s short film Elemenopee was selected for Palm Springs and was in Tropfest’s Best of the Rest for 2005. ‘You don’t feel like your studying something from afar. You feel right in the middle of it. With people in the industry teaching you and real productions happening around you,’ said Nat.

Ali Russell is working as writer, researcher and assistant editor on a documentary shooting in Bali about Balinese performing arts. ‘‘This six month intensive course gave me the confidence to develop my ideas, and understanding of how to hone them,” said Ali.

Sidat De Silva  is producing news clips for Fairfax . “I do camera/lighting, sound, sometimes interviewing, and editing. I never expected so much of Cert IV to come in handy so soon!”
