Filmmakers Studio next Thursday with Oscar winning Australian cinematographer. Hear what John Seale ASC/ACS has to say about shooting his new film Poseidon, what working on Cold Mountain was like and winning an Oscar for The English Patient changed his career. From 7-9pm next Thursday June 22 John Seale will be led in conversation by the Filmmakers Studio host Andrew Urban. Snippets of films John has shot will be screened and questions taken from the audience. John has shot many films and been nominated for a number of Oscars and European Film Academy Awards and has won a BAFTA award. John has also shoot Gallipoli, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Witness, Rain Man, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Gorillas In The Mist, The Perfect Storm and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. While the Sydney Film Festival fills our hours with films from around the globe come and hear from one of Australia’s most applauded and talented exports. The Filmmaker’s Studio provides Sydney’s filmmaking community the chance to hear high profile screen industry professionals interviewed in our intimate studio environment. These well known industry professionals are given the opportunity to screen their works, discuss their craft, their personal journey through their career and answer questions from the audience. These events provide an excellent opportunity for an audience to gain insider knowledge and be inspired by those working successfully in the Australian screen industry. Our host Andrew Urban has 35 years experience as a journalist, he is a seasoned interviewer, feature writer and news reporter, having contributed regularly to The Australian, The Bulletin, Cinema Papers, and Qantas inflight magazine. Andrew is a published author and owner of Urban Cine File. The Filmmaker’s Studio runs monthly starting at 7pm. The venue for these events is Metro Screen’s Studio 1, Sydney Film Centre Paddington Town Hall, Cnr Oatley Rd & Oxford St Paddington. Providing you with a complete education including short film, television production and documentary making. The Certificate IV in Screen covers screenwriting, producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound and editing. Graduates have gone on to work in the film and television industries, been awarded at local and international film festivals, gained acceptance into the AFTRS, and screened their works on free to air television. Television Production Workshops Do you have an idea for a show but are not sure where to start? Spend three days making a pilot program segment for TVS. Students will produce 3 x 3 minute segments from series ideas they have. All students are encouraged to bring a series concept and/or a 1 – 3 page script of a scene. This three day intensive video production workshop will teach you the basics of making a television program for community TV. TV Sydney (TVS) is Sydney’s new free-to-air community channel, where not-for-profit community program makers have the chance to submit their programs for broadcast. This workshop is your hands-on introduction to filmmaking from the initial idea to the final product. In groups you will script and storyboard your ideas, shoot them using digital video cameras and edit the material on Final Cut Pro. All participants will rotate through key crew roles while learning basic screen language, lighting and sound techniques, exploring their storytelling potential. This workshop is excellent for anyone interested in becoming involved in community broadcasting through TVS. On conclusion of this workshop participants will receive a DVD of all television segments made – the beginnings of your career as a community TV program maker for TVS. Digital Camera Essentials In this intensive hands-on course you will learn key camera operations such as framing, exposure, colour balance and focus as well as camera handling techniques. This course is an excellent introduction to both the basic and commonly undiscovered functions of your digital video camera. Learn on Metro Screen’s cameras or bring your own digital video camera. Taught by celebrated short filmmaker Kym Vaitiekus. Kym has been working for the past sixteen years as a DOP for documentaries, commercials, corporate, music videos and has had his short films screened at the Venice Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival. 6.5 hrs | 1 Saturday 9.30am to 4.30pm START June 24 FINISH $185 members | $215 non-members Limited to 12 places | no prerequisites Continuity This accredited course will not only provide you with the meticulous skills needed to work on set as Continuity Supervisor, but will also greatly expand your knowledge of the Director’s role. Learn about film grammar, on screen direction, script mark-ups, on-set protocols, editing considerations and completing documentation correctly. 19.5 hrs | 3 Saturdays 9.30am to 4.30pm START June 24 | Jul 1 | 8 FINISH $375 members | $425 non-members Producing for Film & Television (Intermediate to Advanced) This highly regarded course will guide you through the role of the Producer from recognising a good concept, to exhibition. This course will launch you into the production of a digital micro movie. Over two and a half days you will script and storyboard an idea, shoot it with our HD cameras, then edit your work in our Final Cut Pro edit suites. Discover your storytelling potential whilst rotating through key crew roles learning basic screen language and tips on lighting and sound. Four day digital storytelling workshop ‘Mobilestories’ Mobilestories is the 2nd mobile phone content development workshop This four day digital storytelling workshop will teach you Apple’s iLife suite and allow you to produce your own two to three minute personal audio/visual work. Using Apples iLife suite, photos, moving images, voice over and music you will be taught: • Digital storytelling • Asset acquisition techniques and methodologies [how to take photos, scanning photos and recording sound] • Video editing • Web authoring • DVD creation • Compression and conforming for distribution to mobile phones, the web and DVD’s Prerequisites for participation include: • Solid idea for a two to three minute personal story about events, phenomena, places, people or yourself • Photographs and artefacts relevant to the story • A digital camera [not essential] • Basic computer literacy This workshop provides participants the opportunity to tell their personal story. Channel Free July workshop for 11- 16 year olds Channel Free’s next workshop ‘Digital Micro Movie’ runs July 12, 13 and 14. Open to all 11-16 year olds this workshop will give participants hands on experience with digital video technology and also provide film screenings and demonstrations. Qualified video tutors will train participants in all aspects of video production including: camera operation, lighting, audio, story boarding, scripting, directing and editing. Participants will gain experience in all areas of screen production from acting to editing and everything in between. Shooting with Canon XL1 Mini DV cameras both onsite in Metro Screen’s Studio 1 and off site on location and finally editing using Final Cut Pro. Participants will gain an overall understanding and the practical experience of producing a screen project. With a focus on visual storytelling the July workshop provides three days of intensive video making. So if you are interested in coming along start thinking about ways of telling a story with pictures. Sometimes an image can say so much more than a line of dialogue! Don’t forget to bring along any short scripts or video ideas you might want to make. Young people with little or no prior video production experience are encouraged to enroll. Imagine the style of 'Ren & Stimpy', the humour of 'The Family Guy', and the online presence of 'Happy Tree Friends'. It's an off the wall story of two characters - going on a journey of discovery across Australia. The first series will be between about half-a-dozen five minute websites, so we're looking for someone that can turn our scripts into an outlandish animated series. The director & producer would really like to meet up with any potential animators to pitch the idea and see if they're interested in working with them. This is not something that will generate a great deal of money in the short term, but a business plan has been mapped out, which the team believes, will bring success and financial rewards. The show features a group of famous and prominent Australian women trawling through the week's biggest news stories, gossip, entertainment news as well as interviewing celebrities and experts. Metro Screen congratulates Ridwan Hassim’s short film Khatabah has won another award – Best Screenplay at the Sam Francisco Film Festival 2005.
