LAUNCH YOUR FILMMAKING CAREER AND WORK ON SIX FILMS IN FIVE MONTHS

CERTIFICATE IV IN SCREEN NOW ENROLING

‘You don’t feel like you’re studying something from afar. You feel right in the middle of it. With people in the industry teaching you and real productions happening around you.’ Nat Amoore Certificate IV In Screen 2005 graduate at Metro Screen and director of ‘Elemenopee’ selected for Palm Springs.

Be one of 12 students given the opportunity to experience this comprehensive, hands-on course in filmmaking. Providing you with a complete education including short film, television production and documentary making. The Certificate IV in Screen covers screenwriting, producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound and editing.

Using professional Sony DSR 450 broadcast quality cameras, HDV Sony Z1P’s, Metro Screen’s chroma key sound stage studio and G5 iMac Final Cut Pro editing suites. Participants work together to produce two major location dramas, two documentaries and two studio dramas. Each student will hold a major crew role [producer, director, cinematographer, editor] on at least three productions and will participate as a crew member on all productions made.

Along with the six major productions, the group will also develop and hone their new found skills through a number of smaller production exercises where creative and technical concepts will be challenged.  Technical skills and an understanding of the theory and history of Australian and international cinema, character, dramatic structure, tone, themes, shot sizes, camera angles, the art of editing and an understanding of different post production pathways will be gained.  Participants will learn the art of storytelling and project development through screen language and screenwriting techniques.

All participants will develop and produce a personalised DVD show reel as a tool to assist in launching their filmmaking careers.

Each unit is taught by working industry professionals. For detailed information on tutors please contact Metro Screen’s Training Department on 02 9361 5318 or training@metroscreen.org.au. Some of our tutors include: Adrian Rostirolla Editor of ‘Kokoda’, Tom Cowan Emmy nominated cinematographer, as well as Heather Oxenham production supervisor on ‘All Saints’.

Upon graduation, a public screening and graduation ceremony is held. Metro Screen also continues its ongoing support to graduates through advice, contact with film industry networks and access to Metro Screen’s production subsidy rounds. With the approval of filmmakers, Metro Screen submits graduate works into film festivals and other opportunities.

Graduates have gone on to work in the film and television industries, been awarded at local and international film festivals, gained acceptance into the AFTRS, and screened their works on free to air television.

Some success stories from the past year have included:

Annmaree Bell set up her own production company, Azure productions. With a large repertoire of short films they are in pre production on their first feature film. “This course allowed me to start Azure,’ says Annmaree.

Nat Amoore’s short film Elemenopee was selected for Palm Springs and was in Tropfest’s Best of the Rest for 2005. ‘You don’t feel like you’re studying something from afar. You feel right in the middle of it. With people in the industry teaching you and real productions happening around you,’ said Nat.

Ali Russell is working as writer, researcher and assistant editor on a documentary shooting in Bali about Balinese performing arts. ‘‘This six month intensive course gave me the confidence to develop my ideas, and understanding of how to hone them,” said Ali.
