01. Mobilestories: digital storytelling workshop starts Monday

The Mobilestories workshop will provide tuition in script development models for “Digital Storytelling”, and tuition in asset acquisition practices, including access to digital video cameras, sound equipment and a flatbed scanner. Tuition will be given in the Apple iLife 06 package, Photoshop and After Effects. The workshops will include access to the above software sets and access to Final Cut Pro, Flash and Dreamweaver, all running in the Metro Screen digital media lab equipped with twelve G5 iMacs and a digital projector.

“Digital storytelling” is a method of relating personal narratives using accessible, simple, yet technically sophisticated digital media production tools. A typical digital story should be around 2 to 3 minutes in length, be composed of a series of still images and possibly some moving images with a voice-over delivered in a first person narrative style.

At the conclusion of the Mobilestories workshop participants will emerge with a “Digital Story” in a mobilephone playable file form, a web streamable version (on a web site created during the workshop) and a DVD of their “Digital Story”.

Greg Dolgopolov teaches Film and Media at the University of New South Wales. He works in the areas of video production, Australian film and television theory and the art of cinema. His current research is on the production of unique content for mobile phones. Greg has taught screen studies at AFTRS and media and cultural studies at Murdoch, Melbourne and Curtin Universities. Greg is a short filmmaker, a theatre director and a cinephile.

Ian Andrews has been producing film, music and art for over 25years. He has presented at national and international conferences, had a retrospective of his work at the Sydney Film Festival and exhibitions in FILE festival in Sao Paulo, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki . He is currently working with Berlin artist Timo Kahlen on an interactive web based work called Sound Drift and on producing experimental movies for mobile phones.

Mobilestories runs from Monday July 3 to Friday July 7 from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Between 1.30pm Monday and 1.30pm Tuesday participants are given the opportunity to develop their scripts at home. This five day workshop includes four days face to face and one day for at home activities. Maximum class size is 11.

Highly subsidised by the NSWFTO and Metro Screen this $980 course is offered for just $160, a saving of almost 80%.

Mobilestories is the 2nd mobile phone content development workshop at Metro Screen.

CHANGES TO TUTORS FOR JULY WORKSHOP

We have had a few last minute changes to the line up of tutors for the July workshop.  We originally had Dean Francis and Melissa Anastasi scheduled in but they are both now unable to attend.  Dean's short film "Vermin" has been selected to premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and he is now jetting off to the Czech Republic to attend and Melissa is tied up producing a short film with director Christina Conrad.  So a big congratulations to both of them and we'll be hearing all about it in future workshops when they return no doubt.

The new tutors are Channel Free faves Mark Bolotin and Hayden Topperwein.  If you haven't met either them in past workshops, here is a bit of info about them:

 Hayden Topperwein

10. Project Greenlight - you only have 2 weeks to go!

With the closing date drawing near, contestants of MOVIE EXTRA's Project Greenlight $1million movie-making competition, are feverishly working away, polishing scripts in readiness for their final submission.

Scripts must be submitted to www.movieextra.com.au by 5.00pm (EST), July 7th 2006. The reviewing process will continue until 15th July, with the top 100 screenplays revealed shortly after.

There are still hundreds of scripts in progress. Time will tell if these contestants will be able to meet the pressure of completing their scripts by the July 7th deadline.

"The calibre of script writers that we've already attracted with this unique competition is extraordinary.  Last year's winning film, SOLO, definitely set the benchmark however some scripts we've received to date certainly have that special quality that makes a hit movie.  It's going to be a great competition." said Project Greenlight's Executive Producer, Chris Berry.

"It's also really encouraging to see that the Project Greenlight film-making community, born out of the first series, is continuing to go from strength to strength with an increasing number of members and script writers seeking advice and exchanging ideas via the website." Chris continued.

Last year's winner, Morgan O'Neill, is currently reaping the rewards of his Project Greenlight success with his winning film SOLO premiering at the Sydney Film Festival as well as screening nationally from July 6th.

MOVIE NETWORK and Screentime will announce details of the Project Greenlight production and the celebrity host in the coming weeks.

MOVIE EXTRA and Project Greenlight will take you on a filmmakers ride of a lifetime. Airs September 2006.

11. Riverfestival Short Film Awards - $35,000 prize pool
Riverfestival will be working with the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water again this year to hold the Liquid Lens Awards which challenges entrants to devise a water-themed film to win a share of $35,000.

18. Casting call – Talent search for feature film project through short films series

Are you convinced that you have what it takes to be recognized as a world-class actor/actress? We are now seeking passionate and truly gifted acting talent, to empower our film projects with some truly mesmerizing acting and bring our scripts to life on the screen.
As a warm up to our upcoming genre feature film project in 2007, this year we are producing a series of ‘7’ short films, each of which would focus around a human sin i.e. Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed, Sloth.

We are now seeking talent for the 7 short films, the first of which focusing on “Pride” is to be shot ASAP.  Details will be provided upon receiving your application.
All films would be shot High Definition with talented crew. Edited films may be uploaded onto our website for publicity, online viewing and rating. Some films may be picked for several festival submissions worldwide. At the end of the series, the seriously talented would have an obvious edge at our feature film auditions.

This is an unpaid opportunity to polish your skills and be nurtured by passionate directors (and getting a go at feature film auditioning). Majority of filming would take place over weekends. Catering would be provided. You would also receive a DVD copy of your film(s).
Please email us your story in life this far with your images to pikefamily@shoalhaven.net.au and copy in puns1973@hotmail.com to receive an application pack including audition details etc. Good Luck!
