TLP Magic eZine Vol.4 No.10 -- April 19, 2007 Written and edited by Marko magomarko@yahoo.com You are receiving this eZine because you are a member of The Learned Pig Project. If you would like to unsubscribe (I really don't see why you would want to do that!) there is a link at the end of this email. Visit TLPP website at: http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/ MORE BOOKS ONLINE: Now we have 94 books online! I had some free time and also the drive to update TLPP website with new material so that's just what I did. The latest books up are: ANNEMANN'S ONE MAN MENTAL AND PSYCHIC ROUTINE A famous mental routine. All details set down by Annemann for you to perform. This appears to have been his professional act. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/ommpr/oneman.html RADIO AND NITE-CLUB MINDREADING (LARSEN--MCGILL) Although a lot of what appears in this book is dated (the section on performing on radio, for example), there are some very good ideas here, specially about question answering and methods for performing this feat. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/radio/001.html SEALED MYSTERIES OF POCKET MAGIC (HUGARD) This is an interesting little booklet by Hugard in which he describes a sequence of "Pocket Magic;" magic that you carry with you and can perform at a moment's notice. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/sealed/001.html THE SHOWER OF SWEETS (TOM OSBORNE) This booklet describes one trick (with variations): the classic Shower of Sweets trick, where you show a cloth empty and from it gushes forth a, well... shower of sweets! (It could also be a shower of nuts!). This is an old and forgotten trick which is very practical and performable. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/shower/001.html STANYON'S MAGIC VOLUME V (OCTOBER 1904-SEPTEMBER 1905) The fifth volume of this old magazine. This is very interesting reading and, if you look well, you'll find hidden gems. Done in PDF as a facsimile to capture the look and feel of the original. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/MagicMag/vol05.html HANDKERCHIEF TRICKS FOR BOYS (ALFRED C. GILBERT) Don't let the title mislead you: Mr. Gilbert gave out the "real works" on many top-notch, professional handkerchief and silk tricks to... boys!? If you are interested in tricks with silks, this is for you. Very well illustrated. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/gilbert/001.html KNOTS AND SPLICES (ALFRED C. GILBERT) Another very good book by Mr. Gilbert. Here he gave away the secrets of rope tying tricks. We are talking of top-grade tricks of yesteryears that any enterprising magician today can learn and astound his audiences with. Very good illustrations throughout. Note: I deleted the first two chapters as they dealt with knots, which chapter was more appropriate for Boy Scouts, sailors, cowboys and such, and splices or when you have two short pieces of rope and want to join them to make a longer piece. We do this by magic, don't we? The rest of the book is just great. http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/books/ropes/001.html ----------o0o---------- By the way, the last two books on the list above were kindly donated to the project by Jim Hoy. I am very grateful to him and I think we should all be: he has been the biggest colaborator and supporter and a lot of the books I have uploaded in the past two months have been donated by him... not to mention the complete collection of Hoffmann books he sent for our benefit some time ago. ----------o0o---------- Speaking of this: we welcome donations of magic books. No need to send the original: digital scans or photocopies are fine. Remember, they must be in the Public Domain so WRITE FIRST with name and author of books. I'll do the research and inform you if we can use it. VIDEO SECTION Visit TLPP new video section: http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/videos.html There you will find links for 30 selected videos. These come mainly from youtube.com and have been specially selected for their historical and/or artistic value. There are many magic videos in video sites around the Internet so the discovery of appropriate videos is a very time-consuming job so you'll save yourself a huge amount of time visiting TLPP video page for interesting magic videos. If you like good card magic (and I mean good) don't fail to watch the Luis Piedrahita video. It is in Spanish but you won't need an interpreter. Don't miss it. ----------o0o---------- The site is now looking H-U-G-E with so many books and also the other sections, so pay a visit: http://thelearnedpig.com.pa/magos/ If you don't remember your username and password, write: magomarko@yahoo.com NEW BOOK TO BE PUBLISHED SOON If you look over magic book catalogues you'll see that the guys that perform card tricks are very well catered for by magic book authors and publishers. Also the guys who perform coin magic and close-up in general; they are also well taken care of, not to mention the lovers of mental magic. Even the illusionist have many interesting books at their disposal at this moment and so too the kid-show performers. But what about the guys who do "normal" magic in front of paying audiences? There aren't many new books around that take care of us. In fact, there is almost none... go look for yourself. My new book is about magic you can do in formal shows on stage, clubs and parlors. It will be titled "Showstuff" and will contain more than 40 tricks and complete routines for professional show use. A lot of the tricks are ones I personally use or have used in the past. Other are very good ideas I have passed to magical friends for their acts. I'm a very practical magician and all items you will find in my new book are 100% performable and not overly difficult. There will be a big load of illustrations to make everything clear. Some of the things you will find are: * A new version of Card in Balloon where a torn-corner chosen card appears in a balloon and at the end you magically attach the missing corner. * A trick with a glass of milk and a can where milk vanishes and appears back in glass and then magically penetrates a sheet of glass or plastic. * My complete rope routine. This is a top-notch professional routine I have used for more than 20 years. Success guaranteed! * Magical Separation of colors: Red and white confetti mixed together by a spectator. You dip your hand into the mixture and come out with a handfull. Fanning the hand you get the Snowstorm effect... all confetti being of just one color. The other colored confetti is left. * Cut and Restored Handkerchiefs: The final professional version of this trick which first appeared in this eZine. This is the final version I am using myself. You will like this. * A ghostly hand erases the name of three cards from a slate, leaving only the name of the chosen card. * Original uses for common magic props you own... dove and chick pans used in curious ways to yield original effects... change bag ideas... cheap plastic magic props used in ways you wouldn't imagine! * The Naughty Flower: a routine for kid shows using minimalistic (and dirt-cheap!) props. * A couple of tricks you can make with tin cans. These are very good. * A new version of the "Nest of Boxes" you can make yourself. This is very practical and you will use it in all your shows. * A complete act of escapes for the 21st century. If you do stage shows you will like this. Plus a lot more you will like and use. All practical material, easy to make or using props and things you will have around the house. I'm finishing the drawings and will keep you informed of my progress. The price of this treasure of practical stage/club magic will be around $45.00 (forty US dollars) but I will offer a special discount for those of you who buy it during the first 30 days. More details in next issue. FEEDBACK I'm happy because members receiving this eZine take their time to write back and make comments on the tricks appearing here. The one in last issue, where two drawings changed places, seems to have been appreciated by readers. A couple of emails called my attention to the fact that on some occasions the spectator could say "cross" as her chosen symbol and in this case the effect would border with the miraculous (so one said) because then the symbols is not drawn but the card with spectator's name placed on the table, some magic passes made and when the card is turned over, the freely chosen symbol has magically appeared there. Of course, in this case, you don't do the exchange effect. It's good to have this up your sleeve, just in case. TELLING TIME The effect of this little feat is this: you give a small digital alarm clock to a spectator and ask him to set the time of the alarm to whatever he wants. You divine the freely selected time. To perform this you need two small digital clocks. These are usually sold as travel alarm clock and are somewhat small. Set one of the them to the alarm function. Here you can set the hour and minutes using small buttons on the face of the clock. You must use the alarm function because the time set there will not advance. Since there is a space of time from the moment the spectator sets his time and the instant when you write it down and show the clock for confirmation, if you used the normal clock function, there will be a difference between the time the spectator originally set down and the one on the clock at the moment you show it. So use the alarm function and you will not have this problem because the time set down there will not advance. Set one of the clocks to 00:00. This is the one you will give to the spectator. The other one you can set to any hour you like. Have the second clock loosely fingerpalmed in the left hand and with the same hand hold a small pad. The pad is over the palmed duplicate clock and hides it. Have the other clock in the right hand, visible. Give the visible clock to a spectator and ask him to set the hours and minutes to whatever he likes. If neccessary show him the buttons he has to press. Turn sideways, your face in opposite direction to spectator, so you don't see what he does. When he finishes setting the time, ask him to turn the clock face down. Extend your free right hand, behind you, asking him to place the clock on it, still face down. Turn to face the audience and when the clock is out of sight, turn it around so the face showing the hour is now on top. Now you will exchange one clock for the other. It is done like this: your right hand with the visible clock comes from behind the back and goes towards the left while the left hand with the pad (and the hidden clock) goes towards the right. When both hands meet, the right fingers pass under the pad, carrying the visible watch, and the thumb holds the pad. The left hand lets go of the pad and comes from under it letting the duplicate clock be seen (Note: The duplicate is face down.) The left hand's fingers rub the duplicate clock as if trying to "feel" the time while the original clock stays hidden in the right hand under the pad. Practice this simple switch so you can make it smoothly and naturally. Also, keep your head turned away from the action so they cannot acuse you of peeking at the clock. The left hand takes the pad from the right but the clock remains in the right hand's fingerpalm. The right hand immediately goes to the chest pocket to get a marker and in doing this you can see the hour on the clock. Write it down on the pad, discard the marker and, in doing so, turn the clock upside down again. Grab the pad with right hand, clock under pad, ready to switch clocks again. Pass the pad from the right to the left hand. In doing so, the clock in the left hand goes under pad and when the right hand separates, leaving pad in left hand and original clock visible on right hand as if you had passed the clock from hand to hand under the pad in the act of passing this later from hand to hand. The left hand (with pad) extends to the left and raises shoulder height to show what you just wrote. The duplicate clock is hidden behind it. The original clock is now face down in your right and you are showing the time you wrote BEFORE showing the clock and the time set by the spectator. This is a strong point. Finally turn the original clock around to show the time there. At the end you discard the pad into some container and with it, the duplicate clock. The handling of this trick is very simple but must be done smoothly. The result is a very direct mental-type test. Just get two digital travel alarm clocks, small enough so you can hide them easily in your hands and there you are. WELL, THAT'S IT FOR NOW....
