Sunday - 05 August 2007 OPINION: A Sunday Point Of View - "Line Em'
Up...Moooove Em' Out" By Dick Shuey It is pretty common knowledge by now what
the problems are with our Country Music Industry. Everybody wonders what
happened...and when we step back and take a look it isn't hard to understand
why the Record Industry can't see the forest for the trees. Those trees are the
cowboys and cowgirls they have lined up put a hat on them...sent them to voice
classes and the makeup artists ...bought them a wardrobe ...tell them what to
sing ... what to say and try to make them something they just ain't. What a
joke...!!! They all look alike...they all sound alike and they have no style.
They look pretty on the cover of a magazine and that's about extent of it. Out
of a hundred they may get lucky and end up with one artist who may make some
noise. Maybe. When are they ever going to learn the country music fan isn't
stupid. These so called cowboys and cowgirls aren't even country...THEY ARE POP
ARISTS...created in some ivory tower on music row. A new York / LA
mentality....bless their hearts. They just spent a 100 million dollars on

STORY BEHIND THE SONG A lot of hit songs have been written from lines in movies
or television programs and according to Bob McDill, Keith Whitley s 1988 hit,
Don t Close Your Eyes was one of those tunes! McDill commented, That idea
came from a Neil Simon play that was made into a movie titled California Suite
with Maggie Smith and the English actor I can t think of his name. Anyway he
plays a gay man who s married to this gal and she s about to win her first
Oscar. They come to the awards ceremony and he s involved in hustling some
little boy at dinner. She s learned to live with all of that. She wants him to
make love to her that night and I was walking thru the room when my wife and my
daughter were watching that movie when Maggie Smith said hold me tonight and
make love to me tonight and don t close your eyes. Don t pretend I m somebody
else. And I thought that was a great title. So that s where that song came
from. Whitley s Don t Close Your Eyes entered the country music charts April
30th, 1988 and made it to number one. It was his 10th charted song and was on
the charts for 23 weeks.
Shane Yellowbird's "Pickup Truck" #1 Video in Canada Shane Yellowbird's #1
Canadian single "Pickup Truck" is now also the #1 music video on CMT Canada.
Yellowbird's catchy, feel good tune topped the radio charts for several weeks,
and the music video is now following in those footsteps. The video, shot by
Arkadia Pictures in Vancouver, depicts a man in different stages of life,
accompanied by his four-wheeled companion. As the man ages, his pickup truck
(and pickup lines) gets more extravagant, but his chances of success with the
ladies get slimmer. The song is one of Shane's favourites from his debut album
"Life is Calling My Name", because it's one that many people can relate to. "I
don't think there's any guy out there who wouldn't relate to being shut down by
a lady", Shane jokes, "And we have to laugh at ourselves, because we've all had
our cheesy moments. I'm just glad that the fans are really enjoying the song
and the video." "Pickup Truck" also hit the #1 spot on this month's (July)

SET FOR LIFE By: joseph J, Mazzell This Is A thought I Felt My Friends Would
Enjoy. I saw an advertisement for a new game show on television the other day.
It was called "Set for Life" and people in it will compete for a monthly check
that will supposedly "set" them for life. For some reason seeing this
advertisement reminded me of a moment when my own family was definitely not set
for life. It was just after a fire had destroyed our home when I was a boy. We
had no insurance and the fire had taken everything we had except our own lives.
When my Dad looked through the ashes he could only find one thing: the plastic
case that my Mom always kept her wedding and Mother s rings in. It had melted
around them and saved them from the flames. I can remember Mom crying when he
brought them to her. They were not worth much money, but they symbolized the
priceless love and joy that our family shared. I can see now that this love and
joy were our true treasures. They were all we really needed to be set for life.
When it comes to truly being set for life we have to look away from our
paychecks and look within ourselves. Making a living is not the same as living.
