YABC Newsletter: January 2008

Some words from the YA Books Goddess…

Sucks to Be MeHappy New Year! 2008 is going to be one heck of a crazy year for me. Shoot, it's already crazy! The baby is coming in March (earlier, rather than later, since the doctor is thinking of inducing me now due to some issues), the baby room is slowly coming together, and my book (Sucks to Be Me) has an actual release date now (and a cover!): September 8, 2008. Personally, (not that I'm biased or anything...) I think my cover looks awesome! What do you think? The folks over at Mirrorstone did an awesome job. I can hardly wait to get my hot little hands on it! (heh, hopefully you can't either!)

Seeing as how much of my year is going to be taken up with baby stuff or book stuff, there's been some reviewer re-organization around here. It's not all complete yet, so check the blog for the latest as well as the About This Site page for the who's who. And be sure to give all the new reviewers a nice warm welcome!

And I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention our brand new 2008 Demi-Goddess: Chelsea! The voting was really, really close this year (a real nail-biter, but I knew it would work out no matter what since all the candidates were awesome). She's posted one review so far and I look forward to a year of great stuff from her.

Here's a brief sampling of some of the new stuff added to the site recently.

King Dork by Frank Portman

A strangely compelling first book
a review by Kimberly Pauley, the YA Books Goddess
So…based on my personal blog, I read King Dork back in December 2006. And somehow, I haven’t yet managed to get a review of it up on the YABC site since then. *sigh*. So let me start off this review with what I wrote about it on my blog, since it was my immediate reaction…Read more

A Little Friendly Advice by Siobhan Vivian

A fun read about friendship
a review by Chelsea, 2008 Teen Demi-Goddess
Ruby's best friend Beth has always been there for her, offering a shoulder to cry on and a little friendly advice when times called for it. She was there for her when Ruby's father left, and for all the emotional struggles that followed. Ruby has other friends, too – boy crazy Maria and rebellious Katherine – but she doesn't feel as close to them as she does with Beth. ... Read more

Ma! There's Nothing to Do Here! by Barbara Park and Viviana Garofoli

Rollicking Message from a Baby in Utero
a review by Terry Miller Shannon
"Dear Ma, What's a baby to do in a womb with no view?" is the first line from a yet-to-be-born child in this hilarious, adorable rhyming picture book. The utero resident goes on to gripe about his/her boredom. After all, there's nothing to look at....Read More

An Interview with Heather Beck

What authors have influenced you the most?
Tennessee Williams and Jack London are my biggest influences. Williams’ plays ironically depict the beauty and devastation of the human condition whereas London’s characters possess the brutal desire for survival. Williams has taught me the importance of raw honesty in characters. London has taught me that the strongest, most admirable characters are those who persevere.

Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

GREAT GLBT Book!
a review by Meg (Reader Review)
I really really really enjoyed this book. The story takes place in something like an alternate universe, or rather an alternate town, where everyone is really accepting of the gay community (for example the high school quarterback is also the Prom Queen)....Read more

Win a SIGNED Copy of Stuck Down!

Enter to win a SIGNED copy of Stuck Down, a book by Eileen Rosenbloom. All you have to do is visit http://www.eileenrosenbloom.com and then e-mail me at kim@yabookscentral.com and tell me…what's the author's favorie word?

About the author: Eileen Rosenbloom is the author of the humorous YA novel, STUCK DOWN. The concept for Stuck Down came to Eileen when she and a friend shared the frustration of not being able to communicate with loved ones who’ve pass on. Eileen jokingly said, “We should start a postal service between Heaven and Earth.” Every night over the next three weeks, Eileen dreamed portions of this “postal service” along with other beginning scenes of Stuck Down. She’d wake to write down notes which were the seeds that gave birth to what would become her first novel.

Excerpt: Bad Girls in Love

They're probably going to announce who got what part."

Mikey spoke against background cafeteria sounds of talk and laughter, clattering dishes, and scraping chairs.

"In assembly," she said. "In..." she looked at her watch, compared it with the clock on the wall, "twenty minutes, or maybe fifteen. Are you nervous?"

Mikey Elsinger and Margalo Epps claimed to have been best friends since the first day of fifth grade, which wasn't exactly true. It could have been if they had been willing to modify their claim with an almost -- best friends since almost the first day -- but neither one of them wanted to be modified, or to be a modifier, either....Read More.
