LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome Absolute Writers!
Short letter this week, folks - I'm just back from Potlatch, where I got to meet a couple of you, and still awfully behind.
You know, I don't quite remember what life before the internet was like, in spite of being old enough to have learned to type on an electric typewriter (pre-word-processor) back when dinosaurs walked the earth. This last couple of weeks, though, my internet access has been radically curtailed (for a couple of reasons) and I've got to say, I don't like it one bit. I've learned to take for granted that instant and versatile access to information, friends, entertainment, and news.
On the other hand, it honestly doesn't seem like I have any more time - which doesn't really make a lot of sense. So the good news, I suppose, is that I waste less time on the net than I thought . . . the bad news is that I'm way behind in my blog reading. Heh.
Have a great week, everyone. Write hard. Write true. And write on.
Best,
MacAllister

INTERVIEW
Interview with Terry W.
Lessig, AudioBookMan
Interview by Mary Deal
Last week, in part one of Mary Deal's interview with Terry Lessig,
the AudioBookMan, he revealed what inspired and motivated him to
become a book on CD publisher. This week, find out more about the
submissions and production processes, get a peek at what the
AudioBookMan is working on now, and more.
Q:
What types of queries or submissions do you wish to receive when
people are interested in publishing their books on CD?
A:
If they are publishing the title, all I need is the online form
filled out and submitted so I can give them a price, and budget the
time to do it. If they want me to publish any books on CD, I need a
synopsis emailed. If it's a story I think I'd be interested in, I'll
ask for a manuscript by snail mail.
I need reading material for my cigar and cognac times. I usually
don't take a long time to decide; there's no editorial board here.

ARTICLES
"The Future of Book Publishing"
By Andrea Campbell
I haven't dusted off a crystal ball, but I do keep my ears, eyes, and, yes,
even nose open to the world of book publishing (to see what smells
figuratively), and you should too. I study marketing as if it were as
important as grammar or syntax or spelling. And you should too. Why? If you
don't operate as a business, in the market, with a product, you aren't
selling.
Book Expo America provided some clues as to what trade publishing has on its
mind and I've put together some information for you to think about, should
you want to publish a book. The book business is under a change, and just as
the music industry morphed after the advent of downloads, we, too, will see
a shift.

"Travel Writing: From a Bloggin'
Byline to a Payin' Byline"
By Roy A. Barnes
Access one of the countless travel writing blogging sites that have overrun
the Internet, and type out a personal globe-trotting recollection. Presto:
you can tell the world that you indulge in travel writing! Yet to be someone
that can honestly proclaim, "I've been paid to write about my journeys," is
a totally different travel writing ballgame.
When publications pay you for your travel writing, it means that your work
has stood out amongst the zillions of submissions that converge upon
editors' desks. Money isn't something publications part with automatically.
It's quite unlike the blogging community creed, where the license to call
yourself a writer generally means the license to not see a wooden nickel for
your efforts.
Becoming a travel writer who can make enough money to pay the bills is a
gradual process. These tips will help you get started in this rewarding
quest.

Whatever the Weather, "Errata"
By Gaie Sebold
Weather is v. weird. May turning up in mid-February, blue skies, warm breezes,
sudden scramble through wardrobe for sleeveless tops. May then disappearing, to
be replaced by traditional freezing fog, glittering nights, and mornings when
cars all look like iced buns. Five minutes later, May again, and am flinging
open windows and looking greedily at garden-center adverts. Am constantly
confused and whipping layers of clothing off and back on again like
absent-minded stripper.
Am also suffering distinctly schizoid reaction to sudden gorgeous weather.

WATER COOLER
"Leap Year Day Challenge" by cpickett
Hi
all,
For my blog post today, I came up with a little challenge that I
hope will motivate us to get moving and set aside at least one
excuse temporarily.
Although Friday Feb 29 is a regular day on the calendar, it's
still 24 hours we don't normally get. My thought was this is a
good time to fill in the blank "if I only had more time I
would...
Well, here's our extra day, let's see what we can accomplish.
Doesn't have to be anything major. If one thing gets checked off
a list, I think that is worth celebrating.
If you'd like to play along...
