LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome Absolute Writers!
Spring is upon us, and
Coyote Wild magazine has gone monthly for 2008, so our third issue just went live. I'm learning an awful lot, and having a lot of fun at the same time.
March 2008, Volume Two Issue Three
Stories
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Stockholm - Bill Wolfe
This one, because I'm a complete pushover for awful, eye-rolling puns.
City of Angels - Rosamund Hodge
This story still gives me goosebumps – in a lovely way - every time I read it.
The Devil You Know - Mary Misenor
A southern gothic tale of family secrets and bad blood.
The Last Man in Town - Clinton A. Harris
Odd, twisted, and original – it'll leave you shaking your head.
The River-Hag - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A classic and traditional tale for lovers of fantasy, beautifully crafted.
I hope to see you there, everyone. Have a wonderful week – and write hard. Write true. And write on!
Best,
MacAllister

INTERVIEW
Interview with Horror
Novelist Michael Laimo
By Jennifer Minar-Jaynes
I recently had
the pleasure of speaking with acclaimed horror novelist Michael
Laimo, multi-Bram Stoker finalist and author of six novels and over
100 short stories.
Highly revered by countless fans, his work has
been likened to that of Clive Barker and Stephen King, and is
considered to place among the higher ranks of the horror genre.
What's more, unlike so many horror works, Laimo
doesn't solely rely on plot, he also draws highly believable,
well-developed characters that readers truly care about, making his
stories all the more cringe-inducing. It was a real honor to speak
with Laimo. Here's what he had to say about the craft and business
of novel writing.
Q: Why did you decide to become a novelist?
A: It was on a whim, really. All my life, I'd
always sought some form of creative release. Through my early
twenties, I'd played guitar in a rock band, and had pretty much
burned out from that scene by the time I turned 27.
I was a big horror fan, both of movies and
literature, and decided it might be fun to write some scary stories
of my own. So, I sold my guitar and bought a laptop. Through a few
years of trial and error, I eventually learned the basics of how to
write good horror fiction, and started publishing some short
stories. Soon thereafter, I wrote my first novel, Atmosphere, which
I eventually sold to Leisure Books after attending a pitch session
with editor Don D'Auria at a convention. Since then I've sold five
more novels, and over 100 short stories.

"Keys to
Overcoming the Writer’s Fear of Failure"
By Jeanne Dininni
When you take on a writing assignment for a new
client or begin a new contract-writing job for a company you haven't
worked with before, do you sometimes feel the way the new hire in
the cartoon who’s being handed his welcome packet and termination
packet at the same time must feel? Do you feel as if you're under
pressure to perform, to shine, to live up to the client's (no doubt
considerable) expectations for the piece or project you've signed on
to? Though this feeling is very common, it does, thankfully, tend to
decrease somewhat with time and experience. Yet, when it does
strike, it can be very debilitating and not at all helpful to a
writer's creativity.

"Simple Ways to Re-Slant Your Article"
By A. Antonow
I’ve always been afraid of re-slanting articles. There.
I’ve said it. While other writers were happily re-working old pieces and
making a fortune or at least a living from it-- if my trusty Writer’s Digest
magazine was to be believed-- I crafted each piece from scratch, starting
with the dreaded blank page. While my productivity wasn’t anything stunning,
it felt safer. I didn’t really know how to get started, anyway.
Over the past few months, I have happily been raiding my “sent” folder in
Gmail, re-slanting and submitting old ideas to new magazines. The jury is
still out on whether these pieces will be accepted, but statistically I am
ahead of the game: I have gone from submitting one piece per week to
submitting two to three per day. And that feels pretty spectacular.
Most writers realize that re-slanting an article is a great way to make more
money from writing. If you have written one article about a topic, pitching
additional pieces on similar topics will net more value.

JUST FOR FUN
"The Insanity Defense"
By Kathee Brewer
Aspiring fiction authors can be classified in any number of
ways, but among the most prominent categories seem to be "uncannily brilliant,"
"deeply devoted to substance abuse," and "just plain nuts." The jury is divided
about which camp I fall into, but at last poll the Twelve Angry Critics leaned
heavily toward acquittal by virtue of insanity.
Frankly, after much rumination, I've decided an insanity defense is the only
plausible one for We Who Are Determined to Embarrass Ourselves Repeatedly by
Committing Tripe to Paper. There's plenty of evidence, after all-- at least in
my case. What else but insanity could explain the devolution of an otherwise
relatively normal, reasonably intelligent, fairly articulate person into a
raving lunatic who engages in lengthy conversations with imaginary friends?

WATER COOLER
"Flashback or no?" by KC36:
I wrote one because I didn't want infodumps/backstory...
...I know they say to save the flashbacks until after you've written
and published a few books, but I don't really understand why. I've
heard that seasoned writers know how to do it better or something
like that.
So should I keep it or not?
