There are wars that you do not win by force
TOI-Billboard, August 26, 2006
The Other Israel's email updates

-- Introduction
--TOI's selection of this week's Occupation Magazine's daily picks
N.B. today's Occ. Magazine update was edited by Beate Zilversmidt http://www.kibush.co.il/ (also attached)

This week, our Justice Minister resigned, charged with indecent acts of intimacy. Meanwhile, the president is suspected - and being investigated - of acts of rape. Against the success of the sex-crime opponents the reservists who demand that Halutz, Peretz and Olmert go home is paling a bit. Their grudge: that the trio did not keep its promise of a successful war - a war for which they had to risk themselves, in the hottest of summer and often suffering from lack of basics like food and water. Apparently Olmert will appoint a Judicial Commission of Inquiry.

Much more in the shadow: the criticism of the anti-war groups: why did the government allow the army to such a wild escalation including bombing of residential areas.  Gush Shalom wrote to Olmert, demanding that these more fundamental questions will be included, and considers going to the Supreme Court if needed.

Here follows TOI's selection of this week's Occupation Magazine's daily picks

A Tsunami of Confusion - Antisemitism and the Arab-Israeli conflict
Tony Klug - Prospect Magazine - "There is little doubt that there has been a marked increase in open antipathy towards Jews in a number of countries around the world, most strikingly among Arabs and Muslims. If this trend continues much longer, the mood it reflects could become firmly entrenched within these societies. While deeply worrying, there is no mystery about what has triggered it."

Marwan Barghouthi`s recipe: rebuild PLO
Palestine Media Center / Palestine-Israel Journal - "A national conference should be held with the participation of Palestinian leadership from the homeland and the Diaspora."

Peace Demonstrators Beaten in Bil’in
ISM report - Bil`in Aug.25 - "Demonstrators attempted to sit down but the soldiers’ repeated beating led them to disperse. An Italian and an Israeli activist were beaten so badly they had to be stretchered off to the ambulance to receive medical attention. (...) Palestinian non-violent activists Mansour and Saif also suffered particularly heavy beatings who later in the day arrived at the hospital for treatment."

Wars you don`t win by force - at the death of Yizhar Smilansky
Middle East News Service / Yitzhak Laor - Ha`aretz - "It is once again obvious that there are wars that you do not win by force. Even when the force is superlatively massive and smart. You don`t beat Katyushas, it seems, by force. In the same way that the suicide terrorists didn`t win by force, in the same way that the intifada wasn`t won by force."

The occupier defines justice
Amira Hass - Haaretz - "According to the rules of occupation, when soldiers kill Palestinian civilians, they and those who sent them are never criminals, suspects, accused or convicts."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=15925

The 155th Victim
Uri Avnery - Gush Shalom - "What remains? No peace, no negotiations, no solution at all for the historic conflict. "
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=15924

Lebanon/Israel conflict: attacks on civilians need immediate investigation
Amnesty International - " Call for an immediate investigation into violations of international law by Israeli and Hizbullah, including violations which may amount to war crimes."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=15922

Untold story of the massacre of Marjayoun leaves blame on both sides of the border
Robert Fisk - The Independent - "Who flew the drones? An Israeli soldier of the invasion force? A nameless officer in the Israel Defence Ministry in Tel Aviv? The Israelis knew a civilian convoy was on the road."

Weekly Digest: Reports from Checkpoints, 13.8.06--19.8.06
MachsomWatch – Huwwara, Sunday, 13.8.06, PM: “Children and mothers tell us they have been standing for over two hours in the special `humanitarian` line. Also from the `humanitarian` line: the securing soldier points his rifle at the passers chests 30 cm. away […] Women tell us of [...] hours of waiting, hysterical girl sobbing incessantly, a very pregnant woman (perhaps beginning labor) who could be extricated from there only with great difficulty […] anyone not standing still like a mummy is considered a troublemaker and is restrained and thrown to the detainees` concrete cell. During our vigil at least three different men were treated that way, hands restrained behind their back”
