Awaiting a new dawn

 TOI-Billboard, December 23, 2006
The Other Israel's email updates

Here follow the articles which the TOI-staff recommended today to Occupation Magazine. On this very day, the articles are to be found on http://www.kibush.co.il/ until new ones will be added.

 Gaza awaits its dawn
Khaled Amayreh - Al-Ahram - Some observers believe that Abbas will be prompted to suspend or postpone the elections indefinitely while others hope that the bloody clashes will pressure both sides to work more sincerely toward political reconciliation, probably in the form of a national unity government. If not, both sides stand to alienate the public, who are unlikely to forgive or forget scenes of Palestinians killing one another.
Haniyya: “We are ready to start talks on unity government”
Saed Bannoura-IMEMC-Haniyya called on the Palestinian factions and armed groups to have more self restraint and hold their responsibilities in maintaining the national unity and void all causes of internal clashes. He added that the government and several specialized security devices are closely following and investigating the incidents that caused the renewed clashes between Fateh and Hamas gunmen over the last two days.

Peretz okays Ma`aleh Adumim Wall
Dan Izenberg - Jerusalem Post - Defense Minister Amir Peretz has approved the original route of the separation barrier surrounding the Ma`aleh Adumim enclave, placing 64,000 dunams of West Bank land on the Israeli side of the barrier, Jerusalem lawyer Shlomo Lecker told The Jerusalem Post Thursday. Given his previous criticism of the inroads the barrier has made elsewhere in the West Bank, many people had expected Peretz to change the route and make it less invasive in this area.

Anglican and Catholic joint commitment to Bethlehem
Catherine Pepinster-The Tablet-68.5% of British Anglicans think the church should disinvest from companies whose products are used by the Israeli Government in the Occupied Territories.

Following up on Gideon Levy - an appeal by Dalia Beker
Dalia Beker - Gush Shalom website - Marya Amman, a five-year old girl from Gaza who was left paralysed for life from the “mistaken” shooting of the IDF, is hospitalized at the Alin Rehabilitation Hospital in Jerusalem. Marya’s mother, grandmother, uncle and six year old brother were killed. Marya’s father Hamdi is staying with her at the hospital since the day she was wounded and takes care of her with boundless devotion. Donations are urgently needed to help him stay there (his needs are not provided by hospital) and let other family members come to visit.

To live and let live, among the olive groves
Reports & press clippings - ISM website - Announcements of Israeli Change of Policy Unfounded in Reality / IHT: “To live and let live, among the olive groves”/ Olive branches in Bil’in fail to quell IOF aggression / Enclosing the village of ‘Azzun ‘Atmah and separating its residents from their farmland / Palestine Times: “Defiant villagers united in face of violent occupation” / PNN: “Palestinian nonviolent protest at checkpoint as Israeli soldiers beat student”

A view from Indonesia
Waruno Mahdi [This article is not very new, but what it says is still relevant and has some fresh ideas. A.K.] To understand China, imagine Israel and the Arabs united in mutual consent as one state. China has an enormous, highly educated and very wealthy diaspora, just like Israel, but it is as large as, and even more populous than, all the Arab countries taken together. It has been very important for a lot of people to see to it that the Jews and the Arabs didn`t patch up their differences. Because Jews and Arabs united would mean another China right slap before Europe`s front door.

Holocaust as alibi for occupation
Dror Etkes - Haaretz - True, this was an international conference behind which was a country that declares its desire to bring about the fall of the `Zionist regime` - but beyond that hides a deeper factor, which is indicative of the connection between contemporary Israeli identity and the Holocaust.

A third party for the Middle East - musician peacemakers
Lukas Pairon - www.musicfund.be - By keeping contact in a selective, but also very intense and committed manner, by putting together projects with all those who are victims of the conflict in the region – Palestinians in the occupied territories, the Arabs and the Jews of Israel – we show our solidarity with those who, in spite of everything, continue to dream of peace in future, even if that future seems remote.

Academy of Art in Ramallah: Showcasing the search for normalcy
Avi Issacharoff - Haaretz - "The school of art is our attempt to live more normally," says Palestinian artist Khaled al-Khourani, one of the founders of the International Academy of Art Palestine. "A month ago, the Israeli army entered Beit Hanun and they reported the massacre that occurred there on the news. On the same day, there was a film festival in Ramallah. One of my friends told me, `What`s going on here? How can Ramallah celebrate and hold festivals while a massacre is going on in Beit Hanun?` I asked him which he would prefer to see end - the massacre or the festival?"
