While scolding Norway for its Haniyeh contacts US said to be preparing secret Rice-Hamas talks

Rami Almeghari - IMEMC - Palestinian Information Minister, Mustafa Barghouti, deplored the continued Israeli army attacks on Palestinian civilians, citing the case of the 19 year-old Mohammad Jabali of Nablus, who has been harassed by Israeli soldiers at the Hewarra checkpoint (...) as the worst in a long series of the Israeli army harassment of Palestinian civilians at checkpoints and roadblocks.

Torture which does not leave a trace
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - What won`t the Shin Bet security service do to break the spirit of a Palestinian detainee? Before, interrogators used threats and told detainees that their loved ones were being arrested because of them. Now they even put on the show. Under false pretenses, agents brought the wife and the aged father of a security detainee to a Shin Bet interrogation facility, where they forced him to remove his kaffiyeh in order to humiliate him, then dressed him in a prisoner`s uniform, held him by both arms and, through a window, displayed him to his son, who has been kept for weeks in isolation, without the opportunity to meet with a lawyer.

Israel to brand Arabs as peace spoilers

`Breaking the Silence` at the Yakar Center for Social Concern
Steven Erlanger - New York Times - One man stood and said Manekin and his friends were hurting Israel, especially its image abroad, to salve their own consciences. Many in the audience nodded in agreement. Tall and dignified, about 45, the man said that he, too, had served in the West Bank, "and I`m proud of what I did there to defend Israelis." It`s crucial to intimidate people at checkpoints to keep them cowed, he said, his voice shaking a little, "because we are so few there and they are so many." Then he said: "These people are not like us! They come up to our faces and they lie to us!" That was enough for Uriel Simon, 77, a professor emeritus of Biblical Studies at Bar-Ilan University and a noted religious dove. "As for liars," he said, then paused. "My father was a liar. My grandfather was a liar. How else did we cross lines to get to this country? We stayed alive by lying. We lied to the Russians, we lied to the Germans, we lied to the British!

 W. Bank settlers facing eviction petition court for compensation
Nadav Shragai - Haaretz - They maintain the state has only recently changed its tone, leaning toward demolishing the settlement "now that times have changed." They also maintain that demolishing the settlement, in light of the government`s past support, would be illegal and unreasonable. Peace Now`s settlement monitoring coordinator, Dror Etkes, told Haaretz that the settlers` compensation claims were justified.
