After the President, a minister of Justice,
and the Prime Minister, now also the Israeli Minister of Finance is
being interrogated by police - on suspicion of embezzlement. But,
the occupation goes on unhindered.
Today's Occupation Magazine new articles (for earlier ones
follow links to the archive hereafter). For articles in Hebrew go to http://www.kibush.co.il/index_h.asp .
While scolding Norway for its Haniyeh contacts US said to
be preparing secret Rice-Hamas talks Ma`an News - 1) The United
States foreign ministry has informed the Norwegian ambassador in Washington of
its extreme dissatisfaction with Norway`s violation of the boycott imposed on
the Palestinian government and the meeting between the Norwegian deputy foreign
minister and Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. 2) The United Arab
Emirates newspaper al Bayan confirmed "an official will accompany Condoleezza
Rice in her visit to the region, he will be visiting the Gaza Strip and meet
secretly with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and hold a dialogue with
him at the same time as Rice is in Israel." http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18996
Minister of Information Deplores Israeli Army Harassment of
Palestinian Civilians Rami Almeghari - IMEMC - Palestinian
Information Minister, Mustafa Barghouti, deplored the continued Israeli army
attacks on Palestinian civilians, citing the case of the 19 year-old Mohammad
Jabali of Nablus, who has been harassed by Israeli soldiers at the Hewarra
checkpoint (...) as the worst in a long series of the Israeli army harassment of
Palestinian civilians at checkpoints and roadblocks. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18995
Torture which does not leave a trace Gideon
Levy - Haaretz - What won`t the Shin Bet security service do to break the spirit
of a Palestinian detainee? Before, interrogators used threats and told detainees
that their loved ones were being arrested because of them. Now they even put on
the show. Under false pretenses, agents brought the wife and the aged father of
a security detainee to a Shin Bet interrogation facility, where they forced him
to remove his kaffiyeh in order to humiliate him, then dressed him in a
prisoner`s uniform, held him by both arms and, through a window, displayed him
to his son, who has been kept for weeks in isolation, without the opportunity to
meet with a lawyer. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18985
Friday prayers on Bethlehem lands threatened with
confiscation Najib Farag - PNN (Bethlehem)- Hundreds of
Palestinians marched in the weekly nonviolent demonstration against land
confiscation in southern Bethlehem. Today`s site was Wadi Rahal Village where
foreign supporters joined Palestinians after prayers on the ground that the
Israeli administration is in the process of confiscating. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18984
Egypt: No Talks Until Israel Accepts Land-for-peace
Principle Associated Press - Ynet - The Egyptian official hinted
that if Israel accepted the plan "in principle," negotiations could begin on its
specific points. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18986
Israel to brand Arabs as peace spoilers Herb
Keinon - Jerusalem Post - Israel is gearing up for a diplomatic campaign that
will paint the Arab world as the recalcitrant party if it does not drop the
article in the Arab peace initiative that calls for the "right of return" for
Palestinian refugees, The Jerusalem Post has learned. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18982
Amnesty condemns prohibition for Palestinians to live with
spouses in Israel AI Public Statement - Amnesty International
condemns Israeli Knesset`s extension of discriminatory law denying family
unification to Palestinian spouses of Israelis http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18981
`Breaking the Silence` at the Yakar Center for Social
Concern Steven Erlanger - New York Times - One man stood and said
Manekin and his friends were hurting Israel, especially its image abroad, to
salve their own consciences. Many in the audience nodded in agreement. Tall and
dignified, about 45, the man said that he, too, had served in the West Bank,
"and I`m proud of what I did there to defend Israelis." It`s crucial to
intimidate people at checkpoints to keep them cowed, he said, his voice shaking
a little, "because we are so few there and they are so many." Then he said:
"These people are not like us! They come up to our faces and they lie to us!"
That was enough for Uriel Simon, 77, a professor emeritus of Biblical Studies at
Bar-Ilan University and a noted religious dove. "As for liars," he said, then
paused. "My father was a liar. My grandfather was a liar. How else did we cross
lines to get to this country? We stayed alive by lying. We lied to the Russians,
we lied to the Germans, we lied to the British! http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18980
Bil`in conference on nonviolent Palestinian resistance to
occupation PNN Ramallah - Bil`in Village hosted a conference for
all regions of the West Bank. None of its districts are being spared the
devastation of the Wall and settlement expansion. The People`s Committee to
Resist the Wall, and the national and Islamic resistance movements, convened to
strategize. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18979
W. Bank settlers facing eviction petition court for
compensation Nadav Shragai - Haaretz - They maintain the state has
only recently changed its tone, leaning toward demolishing the settlement "now
that times have changed." They also maintain that demolishing the settlement, in
light of the government`s past support, would be illegal and unreasonable. Peace
Now`s settlement monitoring coordinator, Dror Etkes, told Haaretz that the
settlers` compensation claims were justified. http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=18978
