 Struggle

Nobel Peace Laureate wounded & Puerto Rican climber/peace-activist arrested in Bil`in
Ali Waked - Ynet - Irish Laureate Mayread Corrigan "I salute the residents of Bilin for their peaceful struggle in a region that is so violent and I call on the Israeli public, whom I know is for justice and peace, to support the residents` struggle." // "The wall is believed to be evil and illegal by the whole world" said Tito Kayak, who was arrested in 2000 for climbing to the top deck of the Statue of Liberty in New York. [see also MA`AN / PNN].

Building Economic Independence (Conference at Bil`in, April 18-19 2007)
Sam Bahour - epalestine  - "It is not that I’m not proud that, under odds most communities would have buckled under, we have built productive companies, a stock market, a banking industry, an ICT industry, an olive oil industry, a furniture industry, and a pharmaceutical industry, among others. These are all important but they are all trappings of a status quo that is taking us to a level of despair, unknown to our struggle. "

Human rights activist says threatened by IDF
Ali Waked-YNet News -"Sideh said he believed the raid was aimed at scaring and frightening him so that he would stop bothering the IDF. As part of his job at the Rabbis for Human Rights organization, he calls the IDF`s District Coordination Offices on a daily basis in order to warn of closed checkpoints, inappropriate conduct and violence exercised by soldiers and settlers."

Mothers of prisoners call for their release and condemn Johnston kidnapping
Electronic Intifada - Open letter - "As we reject the illegal detention and inhumane treatment of prisoners, we reject the claim by any group that they may commit criminal and un-national acts in the name of the Palestinian and Arab prisoners. The kidnapping of anybody, including BBC journalist Alan Johnston, is against the rights of the prisoners, it is against the love and the suffering of their mothers, it is against the whole of the Palestinian people."

Turning the other cheek near Bethlehem
Kobi Snitz - ISM - Even as they were repeatedly kicked and punched by Occupation Forces, none of the demonstrators raised a hand to harm their attackers. Instead, as could have been seen in several press photographs, Abu Maria raised his right hand defiantly to signal a V as he was being beaten.

Several injuries were incurred among residents, including 15 year old Mohammad Iyad Hanni. (...) Israeli forces surrounded the home of Fadi Rajeh Hanni. Mothers and wives of political prisoners imprisoned to pressure confessions
Mustafa Sabre - PNN - Kawthar Nofal told PNN that Israeli intelligence has taken to arresting the mothers and wives of Palestinian political prisoners in order to extract confessions. Nofal, known as Umm Said for her eldest son, said that the idea is to threaten the prisoners by harming their loved ones. “They arrested me from inside my house after the arrest of others in my family, and immediately took me to Jalama Prison so that my captive son, Said, could see that they had me.”

Requiem in Ramallah
Noam Ben Ze`ev - Ha`aretz - Confined to their city, in poverty that in some parts includes hunger, afraid to leave their homes at night and subject to both invasions by the Israel Defense Forces and threats from the local hooligans, to these residents, Mozart was a momentary comfort.

IDF probing whether Hebron street `intentionally` closed
Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - "The closure has made life difficult for Palestinian residents of Hebron, including the elderly, who have to take long detours through neighboring yards and residences."

Twilight Zone / Village of the Martyrs
Gideon Levy - Haaretz - "As the 15-year-old ran for his life, a sniper`s bullet caught him in the neck and he bled slowly to death. The soldiers even shot at his rescuers. The IDF: `The person killed was an armed terrorist`"

 Commentary

‘Only Free Men Can Negotiate’
Dr. Daud Abduallah - Palestine Chronicle - The recent visit by Palestinian Minister of Finance Salam Fayad to the EU was a pitiful demonstration of how much rich countries are prepared to use their economic power to browbeat poor nations into political subservience. While the European ministers lined up to pay tribute to the integrity of the Palestinian minister and their care for the Palestinian people they bluntly refused to lift the sanctions of death. The message to Fayad was stark. Not until the Palestinian Authority (PA) meets our political demands there would be any significant economic assistance.

From radical jihad to the politics of compromise
Shlomo Ben-Ami - Haaretz - Hamas, like Israel, is not ready for the compromises entailed by a final status accord. But a long-term interim agreement is possible only with it, and not with the PLO. Hamas` transition to parliamentary politics is part of a process many movements from the mainstream of fundamentalist Islam are undergoing today, as they seek to disassociate themselves from global jihad founded by Al-Qaida, and instead seek to integrate themselves in their country`s political fabric.

Mirror image: Spying charges against AIPAC and Azmi Bishara
Richard Silverstein - Tikun Olam blog - Foxman says a "prosecution shrouded in secrecy" fuels conspiracy theories against AIPAC and American Jews. What about the secret Bishara charges and the effect they have on Israeli Jews` views of Israeli Arabs? (...) Do you think ol` Abe would understand the irony? And would he be willing to extend to Azmi Bishara the same protections and consideration he`d like extended to the AIPAC suspects?? You already know the answer to that one.

Gaza is not Bagdad – Yet
Reuven Kaminer - "There is, therefore, reason for serious concern over the persistent reports of plans by the Bush government to train and arm special units of a "Presidential Guard." The direct U.S. military support and "advice" to Abu Mazen are part of the US effort to maintain exclusive control over the diplomatic activity in the region. "
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19476

The Holocaust as political asset
Amira Hass - Haaretz - "Turning the Holocaust into an asset allows Israel to present all the methods of the Palestinian struggle (even the unarmed ones) as another link in the anti-Semitic chain whose culmination is Auschwitz. Israel provides itself with the license to come up with more kinds of fences, walls and military guard towers around Palestinian enclaves. "
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19481

Israel`s Strategic Threat
Neve Gordon - The Nation - "the Israeli Security Agency replied that it "would foil the activity of anyone seeking to harm Israel`s Jewish or democratic character, even if that activity was carried out by legal means." Diskin`s words are telling. He admits not only that anyone who strives to alter the Jewish character of the state is considered an enemy and will be treated as such but that the secret service has no respect for democratic practices and procedures.

At last, peace in the Middle East
Tony Klug - IPCRI - "...the principal parties looked deep into the abyss and stared the point of no return in the face and, with great good sense, they took fright."
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19466

We like our Arabs to be traitors
Bradley Burston -- Haaretz -- "“Bishara, however, is not our real problem. We are our problem. There is something deep down in many of us, which causes us to takes a quiet satisfaction in the notion that if push came to shove, the Arab citizens of Israel would prove themselves disloyal”
http://www.kibush.co.il/show_file.asp?num=19431

Blood on our hands
Uri Avnery - Gush Shalom - When one makes peace, prisoners-of-war are expected to be released. In our case, this would not only be a sign of humanity, but also of wisdom. These prisoners come from all the towns and villages. Sending them home would release an outburst of joy all over the occupied Palestinian territories. Unfortunately, Rabin did not listen to us. He had many positive traits, but he was a rather closed person, devoid of imagination. He was himself a prisoner of narrow "security" concepts.
